Dear Friends,   I’m Ms. Afrika Queen Lockett, a member-leader of Black and Pink, a national prison abolition group whose work is rooted in the experience of currently and formerly incarcerated people. I spent eight years in prisons run by the Illinois Department of Corrections as a Black transwoman in men’s facilities. Last month my words were read at a press conference and rally at the Department of Justice as War Resisters League, Black and Pink, Witness Against Torture, and Black Movement Law Project delivered 13,000 petitions demanding then Deputy Attorney General Sally Q. Yates end the use of teargas in prisons. Today I’m writing to ask for your support for War Resisters League’s important work banning teargas in prisons. Can you give $15 a month to support this work for the long haul ahead? WRL’s Facing Teargas campaign reveals the ways teargas is used as a tool of militarism—  from the streets we march in, to the cells of U.S. prisons. Started in 2012, the campaign first focused on the repressive impact U.S.-made teargas had on people’s movements from Oakland to Cairo. Five years later, having collected over one hundred letters from incarcerated people documenting our experiences with teargas in U.S. prisons, WRL’s work reminds the public that teargas is not just a weapon used by governments known for violently suppressing protests, like those in Bahrain and Israel. Teargas is routinely used inside U.S. prisons. Teargas is torture. Gathered at the steps of the DOJ while listening to the horrific testimony of peoples’ experiences read aloud last month, allies rallied chanting: “No teargas in the streets, no teargas in prison! Teargas is torture; make the DOJ listen!” Can you give to support this crucial work today? In Pontiac Correctional Center, while held in solitary confinement, I was teargassed twice. Teargas is regularly used to get inmates out of cells if they refuse to move. Another prisoner refused to leave his cell, so they sent in a tactical unit. They maced the cell before going into it, which affected all twenty-seven people on the wing. When teargas gets in your lungs and eyes, it makes breathing difficult. Afterwards, I learned an inmate on the wing who had asthma actually died, even though he wasn’t the person maced directly. As the Trump administration begins, we feel sure law enforcement violence will increase. People in prison are just one of the many vulnerable communities being targeted with militarized force. Chemical weapons, internationally banned in war, should not be found in the hands of private security and correctional officers working with captive people living in solitary confinement. WRL has long devoted its organizational resources to building the infrastructure for cross-movement resistance to all forms of militarism.
