If the EPA Sits on Its Hands, Citizens Will Get to Their Feet
The Senate is set to vote this week on whether to confirm Oklahoma attorney general Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency—one of the most contentious nominations for EPA administrator in the agency's history.
Not since the scandal-plagued tenure of Anne Gorsuch Burford under Ronald Reagan has someone so closely aligned with the interests of polluting industries been picked for the top spot at the federal agency created to regulate those same industries. Pruitt's nomination leaves little doubt that the Trump administration intends to weaken, if not paralyze or eliminate altogether, rules and regulations created to protect the environment and public health.
If a clean environment is a national good, and if the rules and regulations that endeavor to achieve that good are put into the hands of someone intent on killing them off, what does it mean for the nation? For our environment?
