RESPECTED FRIENDS
I’ve taken to the Senate floor 150 times to push for bipartisan action on climate change, urging Congress to acknowledge what is happening to our planet. The world’s leading science academies and our own national security community all agree: Burning fossil fuels is causing catastrophic changes to our climate, and it’s long past time for us to get serious about clean energy. Each time I stand up on the floor, I’m hoping this will be the speech – the one that breaks through to the GOP and shakes them out of their oil-fueled denial. But that hasn’t happened. The grip of the oil industry’s misinformation campaign still has a firm hold on Congress. My trusty “Time to Wake Up” sign is showing some wear and tear – but I’m not weary. If it takes another 150 floor speeches, I’ll keep fighting for a good climate bill. Give $5 or more now to help me raise $15,000 by midnight tomorrow to stand up to Trump and fight for our planet’s future The future of our planet should be something we can all come together on. The air we breathe has no party, and we all want a healthy planet for our kids and grandkids. There was a time when Republicans did join Democrats in pushing for climate action – John McCain even ran for president on a strong climate platform. So why, as we grow closer and closer to a point of no return, is it so hard to get bipartisan support to fight carbon pollution? The answer lies in the Supreme Court’s disgraceful 2010 Citizens United decision, which gave Big Oil unlimited influence in politics – lining Republican pockets with fossil fuel cash, punishing GOP leaders who veer off-message, and silencing any productive bipartisan debate. The fossil fuel industry has cast a very dark shadow over my Republican colleagues in Congress, and with Donald Trump now calling the shots, we’re in for an even steeper uphill fight for progress. We must redouble our commitment to treating climate change like the emergency it is. Big Oil thinks dark money and threats make it invincible, but I am going to continue fighting the fossil fuel industry’s corrupt denial machine – and I need you with me. Give $5 or more now to help me raise $15,000 by midnight tomorrow to stand up to Trump and fight for our planet’s future Around the world, 2016 blasted through last year’s heat record. We have a new year now, and a new president. Donald Trump has called climate change a “hoax” invented by the Chinese. He has pledged to ditch the historic Paris Climate Agreement, and he has appointed a denier of climate science to head the EPA. We can’t wait and see what else he’ll do. We’ve seen enough, and we need to be ready to defend our planet today. The National Academy of Sciences reported last year that global sea levels are rising at their fastest rate in 3,000 years. The warming of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay is crashing our lobster fishery, and our winter flounder fishery is practically gone. Our planet’s oceans absorb most of the excess heat trapped in the atmosphere by greenhouse gas emissions – and over the last two decades, that’s the energy equivalent of several Hiroshima-style bombs exploding in the sea every second. We don’t have any time to waste. This is not about differing political viewpoints. It’s a battle between the raw political power of the fossil fuel industry and reality. With Big Oil plotting to undermine peer-reviewed science, it’s more important than ever to stand up for the truth. And the truth is this: The window of opportunity to turn things around is closing – and I’m not about to let Donald Trump slam it shut. Respected friends, now is our chance to send a loud, clear message to Trump and his Big Oil cronies: We won’t let them ignore climate change. Can you donate today to help me keep up this fight?Give $5 or more now to help me raise $15,000 by midnight tomorrow to stand up to Trump and fight for our planet’s future There’s no question – we’re on the right side of history here. The question is whether we’re in time. Thanks for standing with me.
