Producing the recipe for a perfect Sunday
Grammy Award-winning music producer Malay might spend his days cutting records with everyone from John Legend to Alicia Keys, but his Sundays are all about experimentation in the kitchen and recording studio. It starts with a morning cold brew at Depanneur in Williamsburg to power his brunch creations such as homemade eggs Benedict with smoked lobster. Malay got his start cooking as a child in Malaysia, when his parents entrusted him with everything from chopping carrots to cooking rice. He's not a slave to the stove and opts to spend his afternoons in the studio tweaking his latest track. But he always breaks in time for his standing Sunday night date with his wife at Soho House, where they unwind over cocktails and whiskey. MEET MALAY [NYTimes]

Moldy apples fuel these trucks
While eco-warriors convince consumers to buy ugly celery and misshapen produce, British supermarket chain Waitrose has adopted a different approach to sustainability. They just launched a fleet of delivery trucks powered by fuel made from discarded food. Okay, so they're not exactly chucking moldy apples into the gas tank and turning on the ignition. Instead, the cars run on biomethane from food waste. The vehicles are currently too expensive for the consumer market, but if Waitrose's trial proves successful it might just be a matter of time before you buy gas station food—and supermarket gas. A nightcap worth waking up for
While nothing can replace a bracing dry martini, we can't help but love the espresso martini and its boozy combination of strong coffee, sweet liqueur and sharp vodka. Too bad there are so many saccharine versions lurking on bar menus. Thankfully, The Guardian's Felicity Cloake set out on a mission to save the espresso martini by determining once and for all what it takes to whip up the perfectly balanced drink each time. Use fresh espresso, nix cream liqueurs and top it off with a minimalist coffee bean garnish. GET THE RECIPE [The Guardian]
