The European Union is expected to decide soon whether to license glyphosate weedkiller for 15 more years, despite cancer-warnings from the UN’s International Agency for Research on Cancer. The agrochemical industry has its legion of lobbyists -- but one million ordinary Europeans could put Monsanto's favourite active ingredient out of action for good!Ban glyphosate-based herbicides, exposure to which has been linked to cancer in humans, and has led to ecosystems degradation; ensure that the scientific evaluation of pesticides for EU regulatory approval is based only on published studies, which are commissioned by competent public authorities instead of the pesticide industry; set EU-wide mandatory reduction targets for pesticide use, with a view to achieving a pesticide-free future.A coalition of grassroots groups, health- and environment experts across Europe are using an official petition for EU voters -- called a European Citizens Initiative (ECI) -- to fight back. A successful ECI guarantees us a right to a public hearing in the European Parliament, and compels the Commission to spell out what action it will take in response. Sign the European Citizens Initiative calling for a ban on glyphosate, a trustworthy pesticide approval procedure, and EU-wide targets to cut pesticide use. More than 520,000 Europeans have already signed the Stop Glyphosate ECI launched in February. But the ECI has to be backed by at least one million EU citizens, coming from at least 7 out of the 28 member states. This is a little more complicated than usual, because it is an official EU petition: For legal reasons, signing is a two step process: First sign with SumOfUs here so we can keep you updated. Then you can sign officially on the next page. Your government decides what information is requested and will use it (e.g. your place and date of birth) to validate your signature. SumOfUs cannot access your data from that form. To support a European Citizens' Initiative, you must be an EU citizen (national of an EU member state) and be old enough to vote in European Parliament elections (18 except Austria where the voting age is 16). Not eligible to sign, but want to help? Please share this page with people you know who can sign. From the ruins of war, European governments came together on this day 60 years ago to create what would become the EU. Today many thousands of people will be marching in Rome for the occasion to demand a Europe for the people over profits. We can't all be in Rome, but we can help. Please take the extra few moments needed to complete the official EU petition -- it could really make a difference.
Thanks for all that you do,
Nabil, Eoin and the team at SumOfUs
