Gaga's gourmet guru? Her childhood BFF

Bo O'Connor might say her claim to fame is working for her childhood BFF Lady Gaga as the superstar's personal chef, but O'Connor's cooking is a cut above your average tour bus grub. You can try it for yourself at O'Connor's restaurant The Pomeroy in Queens, which lures even the most subway-averse New Yorkers with addictive, tapas-style dishes like fried pickles and cauliflower doused in jalapeño-pecan pesto. O'Connor credits her winning small plates approach to her Korean heritage, but admits that she picked up inspiration from when she and Lady Gaga indulged in sneaking out for long lunches during high school on the Upper East Side. Despite O'Connor's starry start, she prefers simple dishes like roast chicken and salads with a sprinkle of freshly ground pepper. And since we know you're wondering: what does she cook for her friend when she's not touring? "She'll usually pick Italian. It's just home for her, like Korean food is comfort for me."  MEET BO [The New Potato]

Eating through Murakami's Japan

When food writing's florid adjectives give you indigestion, grab a novel from Japanese author Haruki Murakami for a literary antacid. Legions of fans in Japan and abroad gobble up Murakami's precise prose—and they crave his food too. Fans write blogs and create art projects devoted to chronicling the characters' meals. Forget gourmet grub—in Murakami-land characters grab muffins from Dunkin' Donuts and eat cucumbers like apples. "He weaves food into his stories in a mundane way that communicates the deep-seated reasons of why, how and what we eat." Even surreal Japanese storybook settings aren't so far from reality, after all. READ MORE [The Awl]

Rescue your leftovers from #SadDeskLunch

In the case that you find yourself with leftover curry (no judgement if you ordered delivery), don't just microwave it over rice. This chana masala grilled cheese is worth stepping away from your desk to prepare. Good thing the salty-sweet sandwich is foolproof even through a midday hunger haze. Grab some sliced bread, shove in your curry and sprinkle on a generous helping of your favorite cheese for melting (the recipe says it's optional, but we know that's not true). Toss it in a hot pan for an aroma that will make your entire office jealous. GET THE RECIPE [Veg Recipes of India]
