Right now, a pipeline leak is spilling natural gas into Cook Inlet, off the southern coast of Alaska. It’s putting the endangered Cook Inlet beluga whale at risk. Since December, up to 310,000 cubic feet of gas per day has been spewed directly into the belugas critical habitat. But Hilcorp Alaska -- the company that owns the pipeline -- won’t shut down or repair the leak until mid-to-late March. This is an emergency! Beluga whales are in danger. The entire marine ecosystem could be impacted. And the spill could harm fisheries that are important for the local economy. We need your help to get the gas leak shut down NOW! Don’t let a natural gas spill harm endangered beluga whales: Help shut down the Hilcorp Alaska gas leak! When natural gas leaks into the environment, it presents a serious environmental and health hazard that threatens the survival of marine species and impairs water quality. To make matters worse, the methane emissions from this leak could release up to 991 tons of carbon pollution -- the equivalent of burning almost one million pounds of coal -- if the leak isn’t stopped until later in March. This is the third time since 2014 that this pipeline has leaked. In fact, it’s at an especially high risk for leaks due to damage from corrosion and waves that are difficult to monitor. This disregard for our valuable marine environments has to stop. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration is responsible for pipeline safety. If you speak up, you can convince the agency to protect Cook Inlet communities and the endangered beluga whales! Time is of the essence. Write the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration TODAY to stop Hilcorp Alaska’s gas leak! If we don’t send a message to Hilcorp now that pipeline spills are unacceptable, the company could put our oceans at even greater risk. Despite Hilcorp’s poor safety record, it wants to drill for oil and gas off the northern coast of Alaska in the Beaufort Sea. Hilcorp’s plan is to construct a gravel island to pump up to 70,000 barrels of oil per day under the sea and into the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. That’s right -- Hilcorp wants to construct yet another sub-sea pipeline to transport oil and gas in the even more harsh and unpredictable Arctic Ocean. The impacts would be devastating -- from daily discharges of toxic pollution to a large oil spill. The question is not if an accident will occur, but when.
So why take the risk? So Hilcorp can make more profits. If we can get the Cook Inlet pipeline spill stopped now, it will help save belugas. But it will also send a strong message to Hilcorp Alaska that drilling in these remote and fragile regions is not worth it. It’s crucial that you speak up NOW to make that happen.
Send a strong message to Hilcorp Alaska: It won’t get away with destroying our oceans and putting wildlife at risk!
