‘We’re going to be living with Obamacare for the foreseeable future,’ Ryan says after pulling health-care bill
The House speaker, who was unable to win sufficient support from his party to pass the health-care overhaul, said: “This is a disappointing day for us. Doing big things is hard. All of us, all of us — myself included — will need to time to reflect on how we got to this moment.”

The Brief: You May Want To Complain About Work a Little Less

Less Venting Please
We all need a good venting session sometimes, especially when it comes to talking about work. Half of work coffee breaks are just us going to complain about something super annoying that has happened at work. And for that moment after you release all that anger and frustration you feel great but new research shows, you may want to cut back on the complaining because in the long run it will make you feel worse. In one study researchers looked at employed volunteers and had them keep a diary for three days. The subjects reported on their mood, how well they’d slept the night before, a negative thing that had happened at the office that day, how they were feeling at that moment, and how engaged they currently felt in their job. Basically they found that those who complained more had worse moods, didn't sleep as well and had more trouble with problems at work. Venting is healthy to an extent, but you don't want to become the office Debbie Downer.

Misty's Mentors

Levo 100 honoree Misty Copeland has a new book out called Ballerina Body in which she says we all have a ballerina body (maybe more in our minds than physically but we appreciate the support Misty!) In addition to health Copeland also talks about how mentors have helped her in her tremendous career. When the young ballerina was going through a particularly difficult time she reached out to Susan Fales-Hill, then-vice chair of the American Ballet Theatre Board and an advocate for diversifying the world of classical ballet. Fales-Hill advised her to surround herself with successful women of color who had dealt with many challenges themselves. This led her to meet Raven Wilkinson, the first African American woman to dance with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo who would go on to become one of her mentors.  "She has served as an example, and an inspiration, to me as I pursue my own dreams," she writes. Read more about it here.

Champers Manicure

If you love champagne and also bite your nails a lot then today is your day. Groupon has created an edible, prosecco-flavored nail polish in a beautiful shade of gold called "Proessco Polish" to celebrate mother's day. "Combining our love for manicures and prosecco, this nail varnish is made with real prosecco and smells and tastes just like the real thing. With a delicate gold luster, this lick-able polish looks exquisite, giving you the fun of the flavor without a sore head the next day," the company said in a statement. Not sure why this was launched for Mother's Day in particular as eating one's nail polish has never been one of my mom's favorite activities, but maybe she is unique. If it was edible Pinot Grigio that's another story.

Right now, health care in America is hanging in the balance in the House of Representatives. Things really could go either way.Paul Ryan and his team are going to pull out all the stops. And Trump’s demand for party solidarity may get enough wavering Republicans to vote to pass this disastrous bill. This is a defining moment. Senate Democrats want every American to understand what’s at stake. Paul Ryan and Donald Trump are working overtime to pass a plan that would rip insurance from 24 million people and make older Americans’ premiums skyrocket. That’s not “health care.” At the DSCC we are working hard to get the word out on Trumpcare and what the Republican Party stands for. Chip in $25 right now to help. Seven years ago I was proud to be part of the tough battle to pass the Affordable Care Act. Our goal was to do right by the American people. Today, millions of hardworking people who benefited from that historic legislation stand to lose their care if Republicans pass Trumpcare — a plan which doesn’t reduce costs, stabilize markets, expand care, or help protect Medicaid. Instead, it’s a Trojan Horse that gives a $590 billion windfall tax break to the ultra wealthy and insurance companies, while stripping affordable care from millions. In the end this battle is about what kind of America we will live in. That's the message of the DSCC’s first ad of this new cycle. I hope you can help us get the word out to as many voters as we can by chipping in $25 today. As President Obama said yesterday — our priority must always be to make our health care system better, not worse for hardworking Americans. That’s what Democrats stand for and that’s what we need to keep fighting for.
Thank you for standing for what’s right.

Terrible news: The Washington Post is reporting that we're being outspent 20 to 1 in the fight to stop Neil Gorsuch from getting confirmed to the Supreme Court.(1)And what are conservatives spending all of that money on? Slick TV ads created to distract voters from Gorsuch's right-wing ideology. One ad says he'd be a good justice because he's a good horseback rider.(2) Another says he should be confirmed because he had a paper route as a kid.(3  And one of their web ads literally shows almost nothing except Gorsuch petting a dog.(4)Between all of that and his nice smile, they think that voters won't notice that he's a hard-right extremist who wants to turn back the clock to the 1960s for reproductive rights and the 1930s in terms of corporate power.(5) We're rallying to make sure that voters know just how dangerous Neil Gorsuch is. Will you chip in $5? The good news is that Democrats have just announced that they will use the filibuster rule to stop Trump's stolen Supreme Court pick. Previously, there had been talk that Democrats would let Gorsuch skate by holding their fire for some later, more important nomination fight. But a close look at Gorsuch's record shows that there couldn’t be a more important fight than the one to keep him off the Supreme Court. Among other things, Gorsuch:(6)
  • Ruled against a trucker who was fired because he refused instructions by his employer to wait in a broken down truck in 17 degree below zero weather and freeze to death.
  • Ruled against a transgender woman who wanted to use the women's bathroom at work.
  • Would allow Planned Parenthood to be defunded and voted to block universal contraceptive coverage.
  • Would massively undercut the power of agencies like the EPA and the Labor Department by overturning the Chevron ruling.
And he's only 49 years old -- which means that he could be affecting U.S. law for generations to come. The New York Times says that Gorsuch is more conservative than Antonin Scalia.(7) We can't let Republicans get away with buying this confirmation with puppy ads. Will you chip in $5 to help fight back?Yes, I'll chip in $5 to help stop Neil Gorsuch.
In solidarity,

What I'm writing to you today may seem a little off topic, but honestly it couldn't be any more "on topic".  Life is happening all around us, and as passionate as I am about health and fitness, sometimes there are more important things to talk about than the latest and greatest 5 foods for a flat stomach.

"I love you."

I can't think of any number of words in the entire English language more powerful than these 3 simple words when set one after the other.  They're calming, they're refreshing, they're restorative.  They speak healing, they're heart-warming, and encouraging.  They make all the difference. At the same time, when is the last time you've said them to or heard them from the people who mean the most to you?

For most, it's been too long.

In life, you can't go back.  When it's too late, it's too late.  We never know what tomorrow will bring, or even today.  I've lost loved ones and I've seen others lose some of the closest people to them, unexpectedly, without warning.  Did they have regrets about not telling them they cared enough?  Failing to say those 3 simple words as often as they should?  I don't ever, ever want to find myself in that position. And really, how often is often enough?  Once or twice a year in a greeting card?  The reality is this -- you, your family, your closest friends...nothing is guaranteed. The closest person to you could be gone tomorrow.  Did you tell them you loved them today?  Did you express to them how much they mean to you?I tell my wife and kids that I love them all throughout the day, every day.  My closest friends and my family know they are loved.  Not because they are left to assume it, but because I tell them.  I made a decision a long time ago that I would make sure the people around me know how important they are to me.  Life is too short for the things that matter most to go unsaid. For the people who are close to me, I don't want them to ever have to wonder if I love them.  I never want someone to have to assume that I care about them.  If I'd do anything for someone, they will 100% know it. How?  I'll say it.  I'll show it.  I'll do it.  In the big things, in the little things, in the deep conversations, and in the little "reminder" phrases.

"You know I love you, right?"

Try asking that question without making someone's day. Without filling them with warmth.  Without evoking a huge smile.  Do they know you love them?  Of course they do.  But it's little reminders like that that make all the difference.  Its lets the person know "You're important to me.  Right now, in this moment."  It's current.  It's edifying.  It's encouraging.  It's what people need.Cherish the people around you today.  Let them know they're important to you.  Let them know you love them.  Say it today.  Say it like you mean it.  Say it often.  No one gets tired of being reminded that you love them, or hearing that you care.  Yes, show it, but also say it.  You never know when someone needs to hear those 3 simple words most.

With love and gratitude,

Joel

Respected friends
That's it. The Supreme Court confirmation hearing of Judge Neil Gorsuch is over, and now senators have to decide whether they'll support him -- a decision that could decimate the rights of women, workers, people with disabilities, and the LGBTQ community -- or champion the rights of all Americans and OPPOSE his nomination. Just today a wave of senators, including Senator Bob Casey, Senator Chuck Schumer, Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Ron Wyden, and Senator Tom Carper, stood up for Americans' fundamental rights and announced they WOULD NOT support Gorsuch.Senator Schumer didn't mince words on the Senate floor, asserting that if Gorsuch "cannot earn 60 votes, a bar met by each of President Obama's nominees and George Bush's last two nominees, the answer isn't to change the rules. It's to change the nominee."
Al Franken
The opposing Democrats all highlighted Gorsuch's deeply conservative ideology, which was crystal clear despite his attempts to evade every question asked. Gorsuch's decisions which have consistently been a slap to the face of working people and consumers are, simply put, disqualifying. And Gorsuch's inability to answer any tough question asked by Democratic senators is disqualifying too. This week it became very clear that Gorsuch has a disturbingly callous attitude toward the people who took on corporations in his courtroom. He CANNOT be our next Supreme Court justice. This means we're gearing up for a massive fight over this nomination and Senate Democrats need to filibuster to make sure Neil Gorsuch never sits on the Supreme Court. If you haven't, CALL YOUR SENATOR, and tell them to OPPOSE Gorsuch's nomination.

Here's a quick update of what we've been saying:
  • PFAW Vice President Marge Baker urged Senate Democrats to reject any deal that would put Gorsuch on the Court.
  • The father of a student with autism who was harmed when Gorsuch said his school only had to do the bare minimum for children with disabilities gave a powerful testimony today.
  • Young People For's Cici Battle emboldened young women to use the courts as a tool of resistance in Huffington Post.
  • We thanked Senators CaseySchumerCarperSanders, and Wyden for speaking out against Judge Gorsuch.
  • And here's a cheat sheet of all the senators currently opposing Gorsuch.
Let's get to work.
