RESPECTED FRIENDS,
|
About three years ago, Flint residents began complaining to officials that their tap water was coming out with a vile odor and a sickening brownish tinge. The state and city dismissed their claims for months — until authorities confirmed that toxic lead was leaching out of the city's pipes and into the drinking water. But still, government officials failed to act. Then, in January 2016, NRDC partnered with Flint resident Melissa Mays, Concerned Pastors for Social Action and the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan to file a lawsuit, to force the city and state to comply with the federal law that protects our drinking water. And finally, our voices have been heard. The settlement requires the State of Michigan to provide Flint — a hard-hit, largely low-income community of 100,000 people near Detroit — nearly $100 million to replace the city's lead and galvanized steel pipes within three years. It also mandates extensive testing of Flint's water for lead contamination and ensures that residents have properly installed tap water faucet filters while pipes are removed throughout the city. But the fight doesn't stop here. We need to keep the pressure on city and state officials to follow through for Flint residents — and hold them accountable if they don't.And we need to keep escalating our fight against the biggest threat we've ever faced — the Trump administration's full-blown anti-environment agenda.
President Trump has proposed slashing the EPA's budget by 31%, moved to dismantle protections for drinking water sources for 1 in 3 Americans and rolled back standards to reduce pollution from cars and dirty power plants. We can't let his administration's assault on our environment stand. Yesterday's victory proved that when we stand together and take strong citizen action in defense of our right to a healthy environment, we win. I hope we can count on you to stand with us in the weeks and months ahead and keep demanding justice — for our clean air and water, our health and our children's future.Read more about yesterday's win in Flint in my blog post on NRDC.org.
