Last year the Obama Administration took historic first steps to add the bumble bee to the Endangered List.
In spite of the Trump administration's attempt to block this listing, they have finally...

Hello respected friends:
We’re excited to announce an endorsement of Tom Perriello to be the next governor of Virginia, running on a platform of clean air, clean water, and clean government. We’re endorsing Tom for his bold stand against two fracked natural gas pipelines, the Atlantic Coast pipeline and the Mountain Valley pipeline. We’re endorsing Tom for his principled refusal to take money from Virginia’s huge coal-fired electric utility, Dominion Power. And we’re endorsing Tom for his populist, progressive vision for Virginia. But most important, we’re endorsing Tom after listening to Virginia climate hawks. We ran a poll asking our Virginia members whether we should endorse Tom, or his primary opponent Ralph Northam, or stay out. And they responded, overwhelmingly: 80% for Perriello versus 9% for Northam. That tells us that Tom has the grassroots support of Virginia progressives.
Can you support Tom today with a contribution?

The Virginia governor’s race is one of a handful of key races across the nation taking place in 2017. It’s considered a bellwether for the mood of the country going into 2018. A strong progressive, pro-climate Democratic win will send a message that we can take the country back from the Republican stranglehold. Climate hawks need to take on Trump and climate polluters in every state in the nation, beginning in Virginia.Northam, the lieutenant governor, has been running for two years. Tom jumped into the race in January 2017, and already he’s tied in the polls. He’s has picked up endorsements from climate hawks Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Clinton campaign chair John Podesta, and is tied in the polls with Northam. Sen. Elizabeth Warren has endorsed Tom. Meanwhile, Ralph Northam got the public support of Dominion’s lead lobbyist, who praised him as a “Virginia gentleman” in a tweet.By deliberately choosing not to take dirty fossil fuel money, Tom is leaving himself vulnerable to being outspent. And that’s where we come in. We can help Tom win this race - and we can show that a race run on people powered small dollar donations can beat corporate power.
Thanks for standing up with us on our first state-level race!
RL and Brad, for
Climate Hawks Vote

When you didn’t read the bill

The GOP voted to strip millions of their health care yesterday, and some in the media covered it like a sporting event. Several Republicans aren’t even sure of what they voted for — like Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY), who didn’t realize the bill would cost his state $3 billion.
|
Then there’s President Donald Trump, who praised Australia’s health care system as being superior to that of the United States. Australia, it must be noted, has a universal health care system.

How to grow pinot (on your fire escape)

New York-based sommelier Victoria James anoints rosé a wine-nerd favorite. In her just-released debut book Drink Pink, you'll learn all the ways rosé is made—other than inadvertently sloshing together your red and white at a dinner party, of course (though you could do that...James is not the type to judge). The pink-hued beverage has all the history, tradition and taste of wines usually considered more serious. As you might expect, James isn't averse to having fun with wine. She'll sip Bordeaux with Peking duck and once tried to grow pinot noir grapes on her fire escape. You can find her in person at the Michelin-starred Piora where she oversees a wine list with a special focus on Champagne. MEET VICTORIA [ The Back Label]

Would you like fries IN that?

"I've had extensive, borderline-philosophical conversations about whether fries should be crunchy — like at popular mini-chain Lolita's — or soft." No, we're not talking about what pairs best with a burger. We're talking about the California burrito. This San Diego staple is the French fry-stuffed counterpart to San Francisco's heaving mission burrito. While Chipotle has made the latter popular throughout the US, the former remains a regional secret. Writer and San Diego native Alison Herman explains: "The California burrito's rarity preserves something special about the act of homecoming... Grossing out friends and colleagues...is merely a bonus." ORDER UP [ The Ringer]

Sure, we love ground meat with taco seasoning as much as the next person, but these lamb barbacoa tacos with smoked adobo sauce are a game changer. The recipe from none other than chef Enrique Olvera, the brain behind Pujol in Mexico City and Cosme in NYC. And, just as you'd expect, his insistence to slow cook the lamb for upwards of 10 hours yields tender, flavorful meat that you'll want to eat straight. While this isn't your quick taco Tuesday dinner, it's a worthy weekend project. GET THE RECIPE [ CNTraveler]
