How do you prevent and defeat keyloggers?

How do you prevent and defeat keyloggers?
Dear CNET members,

Happy Friday! I hope this newsletter finds everyone well and ready for the weekend; I know I'm ready. You know I love nothing but for everyone to participate in each week's discussion topic -- this is what a community is all about. As a friendly reminder, when a question is presented, let's please do our best to stay on topic. As many of you know, it doesn't take much to completely derail a conversation. So I ask you to please be mindful of the members' questions and focus on our main goal, which is helping them out. I truly appreciate you and your efforts! Now, on to this week's topic on preventing keyloggers.

For those of you who are not familiar with what a keylogger is, in simple terms, it's a method in which keystrokes on a keyboard are recorded. And it can be done either through hardware using a device attached to a keyboard terminal or software that is installed in one's computer. Not all, but most keyloggers are used for criminal activity in capturing users' personal data like login credentials and password, etc., that can be used for fraud. Now for your fellow member Bob, he would like to know how one can prevent a keylogger from either being installed on his system, or if installed already, are there ways to detect it or defeat it?

This week so far we only received a couple of answers from your fellow members (thank you, Hforman and Ferretkeeper), and I'm sure there will be more advice once people read this newsletter.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but the reason why I think we have a low response from people is because while keyloggers are still a threat and part of criminals' tools of the trade for fraud, criminals have moved on to more effective scams like phishing and ransomware tactics, which are easier to execute. Criminals want to move fast to make a quick buck. And with the keylogging tactic, well, it not only takes time to decipher those keystrokes, but many anti-malware utilities have gotten a lot better at not only preventing them but have also become better at detecting them if they are installed. Do you agree? Let me know.

Anyway, if any of you are knowledgeable about keyloggers (primarily software-based) and know which utilities to use to prevent them from being installed, or know how they can be detected, please share them with us so we can all learn. I appreciate your time, and we look forward to reading them. Have a great weekend, everyone, and take care.

Have suggestions or a topic for discussion? Send me an email.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
While we are on the subject of security, I have a few questions around defeating and preventing keyloggers. First, how can one tell if there is a keylogger in my system (not hardware)? Will antivirus detect them? If a keylogger were active in my system, can virtual/on-screen keyboards prevent keystrokes from being stored? How about copying and pasting passwords from a password program into logins defeat spyware and key logging? My final question is, how do you prevent keyloggers from being installed in the first place? Thank you for your time and advice.

NEXT WEEK'S QUESTION
Hi, everyone. Over the years I have shot hundreds of hours of 8mm and Hi8 video, using a Sony Handycam Pro Video Hi8 3ccd, with an Amphibico housing, for the videos taken underwater. Underwater lighting was variable, both with high-intensity underwater lights and ambient light, even at depth. Prior to the Sony Handycam Pro, I was using whichever was the best 8mm video camera on the market at the time. The remaining videos are of extensive world travels. I now want to digitize all the videos and need guidance in choosing among professional services, running the videos through the camera into my computer or buying an A-D digitizer for home use. Will a professional A-D service clean the tapes and give a sharper copy than the other methods? Are there any other advantages of a professional service?

I have a PC running Windows 7 Pro with 16GB of RAM, an average video card that will be upgraded, and solid-state 2TB HDs. I am also looking into video editors that will not require an outrageous amount of learning curve. Any assistance you can give me will be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi. I'm Jess, the new CEO of the Democratic Party.

I'm excited to be joining Tom, the rest of the team at DNC HQ, and all of our amazing supporters like you to rebuild our party from the grassroots up -- because I've seen the power of grassroots movements in action.I got my start in politics helping elect Democrats in Colorado, Illinois, and my home state of Arizona, where we turned Arizona's 1st congressional district from red to blue.
We did it because we got organized in our communities and went block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood, to get the word out about what we believed in and turn out our voters to the polls on Election Day.At EMILY's List, where I've been helping elect Democratic women for the past four years, I saw how we can do that same kind of grassroots organizing on a national scale. That's how we elected the most diverse Congress in history, including quadrupling the number of Democratic women of color in the Senate. If we organize in every zip code, we can elect Democrats from school board to Senate in every corner of this country. I know, as Tom does, that we can do it -- but it's going to take all of us working together to get our party back in fighting form.So first thing's first: I want to hear from you. Let me know your thoughts and how our party can be more effective in your community so we can elect Democrats at every level and every state:

Thanks so much for being a part of our party. Supporters like you are what powers our candidates to victory, and you've already shown such an unprecedented level of activism and enthusiasm over the past few months.

I'm ready to jump in -- let's get to it.

Jess

The Sanctuary Issue: People Demanding Justice for Each Other

Portrait of Tracy Loeffelholz DunnThe most inspiring thing about the sanctuary movement isn’t the awesomeness of mayors shaking their fists at the Trump administration’s cruel immigration policy. It’s compassionate defiance, extreme acts of grace coming from ordinary people and small communities. Volunteers in Denver accompanying neighbors to deportation hearings. Tech workers pledging never to build a database to be used against Muslims. In our new issue, Lornet Turnbull writes about these and other acts of homegrown resistance. Check out her article and peek inside The Sanctuary Issue.

Manuel Blanco, Enrique Rodríguez and Julio Latorre are Spanish firemen. Over a year ago, they moved to the Greek island of Lesbos to become volunteers for NGO PROEMAID (Professional Emergency Aid) and put their professional lifesaving experience to a noble cause: saving children, women, and men, escaping war and poverty from drowning. They could now face 10 years in jail, because a little known law lets EU countries criminalise ordinary citizens who help refugees. And the EU Commissioner responsible, Dimitris Avramopoulos, is refusing to change this law. The reason? According to him, this isn't a big enough problem. More than 130,000 WeMove.EU members have already signed a petition demanding that humanitarian workers be free from criminal charges for the work they do. Let's add our names now, to show the EU Commissioner that he's wrong!Add my name in defense of Julio, Manuel, Enrique and other rescue workers doing lifesaving work.  These men risked their lives to help thousands of people, but their lifesaving actions were seen by the Greek government as human smuggling. And now, highly respected NGOs like Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and Save the Children are being accused of “encouraging human traffickers” with their life-saving search and rescue work in the mediterranean. Currently, if you help a drowning child out of the sea without the proper documents, you could be facing criminal charges for human smuggling. This is exactly what happened to Julio, Manuel and Enrique. These everyday firefighters are now in the middle of a legal battle where they risk being put in prison for 10 years for their lifesaving efforts. WeMove.EU campaigns for a European Union committed to social and economic justice, environmental sustainability and citizen-led democracy. They're leading this campaign together with Social Platform and PROEMAID. Make no mistake -- the EU's false "security" approach to the migration crisis is a gift to the corporations who profit from building fortress Europe's policing, surveillance and detention infrastructure. We're campaigning on that too. But right now, let's stand with these other NGOs and movements to oppose the EU criminalising rescue workers and volunteers.  Please sign and share this important petition on WeMove.EU's website.

Thanks for all that you do,
Eoin, Wiebke and the team at SumOfUs
