Maggie for NH
Friends —
The special election to fill Montana's red House seat is just days away, and we came up just short of our fundraising goal for Democrat Rob Quist last week.If you're angry about the direction Donald Trump and Steve Bannon are taking our country, and if you're horrified at the dangerous healthcare bill that Republicans pushed through the House, the very best thing you can do is give $3 or more to Rob's campaign right now.Polls show that Rob is within striking distance so please, help us make up lost ground by giving $3 or more to his campaign for the final stretch. Anything you can give helps. If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will automatically be split between Rob Quist and Maggie Hassan.
Thanks for doing your part to elect one more Democrat to resist Trump's dangerous agenda.

EPI News—Our most important stories this week

It’s time for corporations to pay their fair share of taxes

In a new Economic Snapshot, EPI’s Josh Bivens dispels the notion that U.S. corporations are paying higher taxes than their international peers and argues that policymakers should increase—not decrease—taxes paid by corporations. While the statutory corporate tax rate in the United States is 35 percent, after loopholes and deductions, the effective tax rate that corporations pay is only 14 percent. Bivens finds that cutting rates even further would exacerbate inequality by boosting the post-tax incomes of owners and managers of corporations. Read the Snapshot »

Former Secretary of Labor Tom Perez joins EPI’s Board of Directors

Former Obama administration Secretary of Labor Tom Perez has joined EPI’s Board of Directors, where he will advise EPI’s leaders on matters of labor policy and help set priorities for the Institute. Perez joins a distinguished board that includes AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), and three former labor secretaries—Robert Reich and Alexis Herman, who served in the Clinton administration, and Carter administration Secretary Ray Marshall.

Unemployment is declining, but the recovery isn’t reaching everyone

According to analysis by EPI’s Janelle Jones, unemployment rates dropped in 36 states and the District of Columbia, increased in 10 states, and remained the same in four states during the first quarter of 2017. However, pockets of high unemployment persist—with rates as high as 12.9 percent for African Americans (in the District of Columbia) and 10.8 percent for Hispanics (in Pennsylvania).

EPI Policy Center strongly opposes the Regulatory Accountability Act

In a letter to the Senate Committee on Homeland Services and Government Affairs, Heidi Shierholz and Celine McNicholas of the EPI Policy Center voiced strong opposition to the Regulatory Accountability Act of 2017 (RAA), which requires agencies to adopt rules that are “most cost-effective”—posing a serious threat to worker protections and giving corporate special interests even more opportunities to influence the rulemaking process. Shierholz and McNicholas emphasized that while there may be upfront costs to complying with worker safety regulations, the long-term benefits vastly outweigh the costs.

Klima-Demo beim UN-Gipfel in Lima, Dezember 2014

Wirtschaftsminister Sigmar GabrielUmweltministerin Barbara Hendricks

We won against the dirty coal industry in the fight for cleaner air in Europe!
After years of delays, and thousands of unnecessary deaths, EU governments voted to adopt the new air pollution limits for coal. The new standards will save an estimated 20,000 lives each year, and are a big step forward towards a Europe free from the deadly effects of coal - not just for our health, but also for our climate. [1] The vote was incredibly close - it passed by just a 0.14% margin! [2]

This is a huge victory for civil society - and the WeMove community was right there to help make that happen! More than 138,000 of us all across Europe took action and signed our petition to EU member states’ ministers for health and environment, and we addressed them in 10 different languages! [3] Thousands of us shared our message with our friends on social media, and we sent hundreds of tweets to deliver our demands to the ministers. In a last-minute European mobilisation against plans to derail the adoption process, we demonstrated on the streets of Berlin, Warsaw and Brussels - all in the span of one week! Our amazing partners [4] worked tirelessly advocating for healthier air for all Europeans to decision-makers, and speaking to journalists to name and shame the opposing countries. And it all worked! This is the power our community has when we come together - and we won’t stop fighting for a healthyplanet safe from corporate greed, and for a better climate for future generations. If we won with the dirtiest coal industry, we can take on anyone in the struggle to stop climate change! Will you help us be ready to mobilise, and stand together even stronger, by donating just a few euros a week to the WeMove community? We gathered in front of the Chancellery in Berlin to demonstrate against the German government's moves to protect its dirtiest lignite coal plants, and demanding they don’t block the vote on Friday. We brought banners and huge power plants, and handed in the over 123,000 signatures to the Chancellery.
[The banner reads: 121,626 Europeans demand: Clean up Europe’s toxic air! No carte blanche for lignite!]

Then a few days later, keeping up the pressure, we gathered for a demonstration outside the Polish Ministry of Environment. Handing in the book with over 125,000 signatures to the Ministry, we demanded that the notorious Polish government stops protecting its dirty coal industry above the health of the citizens, and instead acts to save over 20,000 lives a year.
[The banner reads: Let’s save 20 thousand people every year]

And finally, on the morning of the long-awaited vote in the EU committee on industrial emissions - we came together for a street protest in the heart of Brussels, right in front of the European Council building. With our signs and banners we demanded that our governments protect our health from coal pollution, and we sent a message of support to our allies and the European Commission, asking them to stay strong and not give in to the opposition.
[The banners read: Let’s clean up Europe’s air!; Set strict limits for air pollution!; Protect our health and environment!; Blue skies, not brown coal!; Cut coal, save lives!]
It was only a couple of hours after we rolled up our banners and took off our smog masks that we learnt the outcome of the vote - and we’re really happy to share with you the amazing feeling of victory!
One thing is for sure: we couldn’t have done it without each and every one of us playing their part, and the tens of thousands of our voices put together gave us the power to loudly demand an end to coal pollution.Respected friends, this past few weeks have shown us what we can achieve when we come together and mobilise. The era of dirty coal power is coming to an end, paving the way for a cleaner, healthier future for us all - and today we helped make an important step towards a Europe free from coal pollution. But the fight is far from over, and putting en end to dirty fossil fuels will be a long-termbattle.You can help us be prepared and stand ready to fight for clean air and healthy climate. Already more than 3000 people from all over Europe are supporting our campaigning with a regular donation. With just a few euros a week, you will help make sure that we stay independent.

Thank you!

Jimmy Carter is taking on the Gun Lobby!
'It's ridiculous for our country to be in the forefront of killing people with guns... the NRA is wrong and we should have some restraints.' - Jimmy Carter
Thank Jimmy Carter for fighting the Gun Lobby!
FRIENDS, America has the highest rate of gun violence than any other developed country.
But Trump and Republicans in Congress REFUSE to do anything about this epidemic.
They’re too dependent on Gun Lobby donations to ever take action.
FRIENDS, Jimmy Carter won’t accept this excuse. Not when lives are on the line.
Sign your name now to THANK Jimmy Carter for standing up to the Gun Lobby:

So to answer the question in my last email, there are 3 major root causes, of accelerated aging:

1. Degradation of your “cellular timekeepers”,known as telomeres.  Telomeres are the “protective caps” at the end of each strand of cellular DNA that control aging. In fact, telomeres are so critically important to aging that some within the medical community are now calling telomeres your “eternal youth genes”, and for good reason. You see, every day the cells in your body divide as many as 2 trillion times. Old cells die, and the body replaces them with a duplicate.  While these new cells are indeed duplicates, like a photocopied image they are slightly less perfect than the original.  What’s more, a 2009 Nobel Prize-winning discovery revealed that with each cell division… …it’s the telomeres (those protective caps at the end of DNA) that are slightly degraded and over time become significantly reduced in size. Think of the protective plastic tips at the end of your shoe laces. When those deteriorate, the entire shoe lace unravels. It’s the same thing with your telomeres and the delicate cells of your body.Worse yet, as your telomeres degrade and shorten, your body ages more rapidly. The cold, hard truth is this:  As aging accelerates, each year you live what is ultimately a lower and lower quality of life until eventually your telomeres “expire” and the inevitable happens:  you die. But it’s not all bad news… You see, this same breakthrough medical research also shows that if you can boost the health of your telomeres and keep them from degrading and shortening……you can dramatically slow the aging process and add many high-quality, vivacious and productive years to your life! This means that even when your chronological age
goes up, your cells stay young and vibrant!  We’ve all seen a 50 year old man or woman who doesn’t look a day past 40 and other 50 year olds who look like they could easily pass for 65. As the old adage goes, your actual age is just  number – what’s of prime importance, however, is your cellular age, or how old (or young) your body looks, feels, performs, and functions. The primary enzyme responsible for keeping telomeres strong, healthy and long is called telomerase. And even better, you’ll be happy to know that all 3 ingredients in Curcupure3  work together synergistically to supercharge telomerase production  … …and keep your body’s cellular timekeepers—your telomeres—healthy, youthful, and full of life! That’s just the first part. In the next email, I’ll reveal the second way the 3 ingredients in Curcupure3 extend life.
