ICYMI, The Met Gala was last night and all our faves turned out.
Nail down your Cinco de Mayo plans now– we've got the hookup. We've seen sushi burritos. We've seen sushi donuts. And now, NYC can feast on sushi burgers, for no other reason than being extra AF. Anyone else still wondering WTF happened at Fyre festival last weekend? So are we, TBH. Fill up your summer calendar with a free concert series under the DUMBO arch, and a ton of free programming at Hudson River Park, including movies on the waterfront and fishing lessons. Looking to GTFO this summer? How about a beachy Croatian getaway– on us? This New Yorker took a break from boozin' for one whole month (If you're not from NYC, you don't get how difficult it is to avoid drinking here, K?)– these are his takeaways.
First there was the sushi burrito. Then there was the sushi donut. Now, there’s a sushi burger, because why the hell not. Check out Redeye Grill in Midtown’s new creation, complete with a bun literally made of rice. You can even get that with black sushi rice, if you’re one of those people who is also sick and tired of the rainbow food trend. Fun fact – May is Burger Month. So why not try a burger we’re pretty sure you’ve never had before. READ MORE…
So of course, you want to have the most fun this summer at the smallest cost. Well, you’re in luck, because Hudson River Park just released its full lineup of events happening at the park this summer for free. They’ve got it all going on, from outdoor movie screenings to dance festivals and so much more. Cast a line or sing-along at one of their many organized events happening this summer at no zero cost to you. READ MORE…
Everyone knows that the Met Gala is basically The Oscars of the East Coast. ...Except better because no one has to pretend they've seen 8 boring movies, and can focus on what really matters: The fashion. This year's theme was "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between..." for some reason, a couple people thought that was optional (Daisy Ridley, wtf girl?) but all our faves delivered. Fun fact of the day: You know how Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican Independence Day? WELL, IT DOESN'T. It actually commemorates the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The more you know, y'all. Impress everyone with your cultural awareness while you throw back a dangerous amount of tequila... at one of these dope parties of course. READ MORE…
If you spend any time on social media, which pretty much everyone does to some extent, you’ve heard off the Fyre Festival and its downfall. The Fyre Festival, hosted by rapper Ja Rule, was supposed to be an exclusive, ultra-luxurious music festival (think glamping) in the Bahamas this past weekend. But what entailed was a bunch of young adults stranded on the island after paying $12,000 a ticket for “jail food,” basic tents, and zero entertainment acts or security. The latest dramaz: Ja Rule has managed to apologize for the disaster... but The Ringer argues why he really shouldn’t have to. READ MORE…
It’s not easy to be sober here in NYC. We live in a culture that legally uses alcohol to celebrate...well, just about everything. We have bottomless brunches, booze cruises and bars galore. Not to even mention all the important occasions where you might even get shade for not having a champagne glass to toast with, like weddings, showers and of course birthdays. But one New Yorker took on the challenge to be sober for a month and his takeaways are pretty interesting! Could you make it a month in NYC without a drink? READ MORE…
Dreaming of vacation? Us too. That’s why we’re giving away a 4 night, 5 day stay in Croatia to you and your plus one! Experience this Eastern European country’s cuisine with complementary Croatian cooking classes and a breakfast buffet every morning. You’ll also have unlimited access to the beach, a day boat cruise on us, as well as airfare to and from your vacation! So what’re you waiting for? Enter our giveaway now before it’s too late! READ MORE…
We’re pretty sure there’s nothing better than free live music, except maybe free food... but we digress. You can now check out the full lineup of acts to see under the DUMBO archway this summer for free. In fact, every Friday night beginning on June 8th, you can catch a free musical act at 6:30 p.m. Even better: the lighthouse will be selling beer and liquor for all y’all over 21. READ MORE…

Democrats just introduced a Medicare for All bill in the Senate! That’s amazing! But we need a progressive Senate to pass it into law. That means winning back the GOP seat in Nevada. Click here to sign progressive candidate Jesse Sbaih’s petition to say you support Medicare for All >>

those without health care do NOT deserve to die.Americans spend more than any other people on health insurance and pay the highest prices for prescriptions. And yet we are the only major country to NOT guarantee health care to our citizens.
We can do better. That’s why we’re SO excited that Democrats in Congress have introduced a landmark Medicare for All bill!! Progressives understand that best long-term solution to our health care crisis is a single-payer national system. But in a Republican-controlled Senate, this proposal is going NOWHERE. Progressive Jesse Sbaih is running for Senate in Nevada to take back the Majority for Democrats and finally PASS Medicare for All. But he needs your support.
Trump and his billionaire-backed Republicans are doing everything they can to eliminate Obamacare and leave MILLIONS without insurance.
But Jesse won’t let them get away with it. He refuses to leave anyone behind. He’ll stand up to the GOP’s radical agenda in the Senate. Friends, Nevada is one of the ONLY competitive Senate seats in 2018. Winning this seat is the only way Democrats take back the Senate -- and finally pass the landmark Medicare for All bill.
It’s absolutely disgraceful that the United States allows our citizens to suffer while big corporations reap huge profits.
We have had ENOUGH. That’s why Jesse strongly supports a single-payer national health care program. Medicare for All is how we can build on the success of Obamacare, and achieve universal healthcare for all Americans. Add your name today to support Medicare for All:

Last week, organic farmer Uroš Macerl and five other brave people from around the world were awarded the most prestigious environmental award in the world, the Goldman Environmental Prize (aka. the 'Green Nobel'). The award recognizes ordinary people like you, me and, Uroš who do extraordinary things to stand up to corporate power, often risking everything to keep their local communities and ecosystems safe from harm.In 2016, Peruvian farmer Máxima Acuña won the Goldman Prize for her tireless work stopping extractive giant Newmont Mining from building a gold mine in her backyard. Over 160,000 SumOfUs members have asked Newmont to leave Máxima alone after repeated harassment over the last two years. Together, we raised resources for her support and legal fund. And finally, we all cheered and stood by Máxima as she won the award last year.Given SumOfUs’ mission is to fight for people over profits, we want to be the first to introduce you this year’s winners. Without further ado, here they are. You can click on their photos to learn more or send them a personal message.
UROS MACERL, Slovenia
Uroš Macerl, an organic farmer from Slovenia, successfully stopped one of the largest manufacturer of building materials in the world, Lafarge, from spewing hazardous industrial waste in his community. Uroš rallied support to fight one of the dirtiest industrial processes on the planet, cement production and took his fight to the European Commission. Against all odds, Uroš forced the plant to shut down in 2015.For decades, air pollution from local manufacturing operations had been settling over the narrow valleys in central Slovenia’s historically industrial towns. Dangerous emissions affected local farmers, forests, wildlife, and people. Cancer rates in the region outpaced the rest of the country; children who lived there were twice as likely to suffer from chronic respiratory illnesses.
French-Swiss construction giant Lafarge Cement began incinerating over 100 tons of hazardous industrial waste daily on the doorstep of Uroš’s farm. Uroš took Lafarge and the complicit Slovenian government to the European Union, and wouldn’t give up until the kiln closed down for good.
SumOfUs members and partners in France helped expose Lafarge's financial support for ISIS, which leads to the CEO's resignation and the city of Paris scrapping a deal with the company. Lafarge is a colossus, and seems determined to stop at nothing for a profit -- but we've already proven that they're no match for international people power!
RODRIGUE MUGARUKA KATEMBO, Democratic Republic of Congo
Rodrigue Katembo put his life on the line to stop a British oil company from drilling for oil in Virunga National Park. As a park ranger, Rodrigue exposed bribery, corruption and violence, and forced UK-based SOCO International to withdraw and preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site for future generations.
PRAFULLA SAMANTARA, India
An iconic leader of social justice movements in India, Prafulla Samantara led a historic 12-year legal battle against a massive, British-operated open-pit aluminium ore mine. To save India’s breathtaking Niyamgiri Hills and the endangered Bengal tiger that call them home, he walked, biked and travelled for miles to build resistance to this destructive mine among the Indigenous Dongria Kondh until finally winning in India’s Supreme Court in 2016.
WENDY BOWMAN, Australia
For almost 7 years, 84 year-old Wendy Bowman fought to stop Chinese-owned mining company Yancoal from expanding an open cut coal mine. Bowman took her fight all the way to the New South Wales Court of Appeal, and didn’t give up until she stopped the mine in its tracks.
MARK! LOPEZ, United States
mark! Lopez took on one of the biggest manufacturers of industrial and lead batteries in the world after it polluted his community in Los Angeles’ Eastside for more than 30 years. After tireless door-knocking and outreach, mark! built so much popular support that the Governor of California was forced to commit $176.6 million to decontaminate homes, one of the largest environmental cleanups in state history.
RODRIGO TOT, Guatemala
An Indigenous leader in Guatemala’s Agua Caliente, Rodrigo Tot led his community to a landmark court decision that recognized land titles to the Q’eqchi people and kept destructive nickel mining out of his community. Bravely taking on a Guatemalan legal system mired in corruption, Rodrigo shocked mining companies and environmental activists alike when he actually won.
As always, thanks for all that you do,
Angus, Emma, Wiebke, and the team at SumOfUs
