EPI News—Our most important stories this week The zombie robot argument lurches on In a new report, EPI’s Lawrence Mishel and Josh Bivens challenge the narrative that the pace of automation is accelerating and that the use of robots will lead to much higher unemployment and greater inequality. The authors argue that if automation actually led to higher overall joblessness, the United States would have seen consistently increasing unemployment over the last 70 years. That didn’t happen. Likewise, if automation were indeed surging and leading to joblessness in recent years, we would not have been able to reduce the unemployment rate from 10 percent in 2010 to under 5 percent now. The authors encourage policymakers to focus on the immediate need to create good jobs and robust wage growth—instead of getting worked up about a hypothetical “robot apocalypse.” Read the report » Share this report: There's no evidence that automation leads to joblessness and inequality. Share Tweet EPI Policy Center applauds introduction of the Raise the Wage Act of 2017 In a statement released this week, EPI Policy Center’s Heidi Shierholz applauded the introduction of the Raise the Wage Act of 2017, which would gradually raise the minimum wage to $15 by 2024. The bill would help make up for lost ground, directly or indirectly lifting wages for 41.5 million workers—29.2 percent of the wage-earning workforce. New York City Passes Fair Work Week legislation On May 24, the New York City Council passed a comprehensive suite of bills that provides fair work scheduling for fast-food employees, including a guaranteed two weeks advance notice of schedule to all fast food workers with additional pay if the schedule is changed at the last minute. In March, EPI research associate Lonnie Golden testified before the New York City Council in support of this legislation.
