Fossil-fuel utility Dominion Energy has been dominating Virginia politics with campaign contributions, astroturf groups, Internet ads, even missives telling their employees to hit the polls to protect their climate-killing profits.
For the first time ever, a major gubernatorial candidate took on this dirty power — climate hawk Tom Perriello refused Dominion's money and campaigned against its climate-killing pipelines.Unfortunately, Tom came up short last night, getting 44% of the record-turnout primary vote to his opponent Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam’s 56%. Here’s the good news: Our movement’s effort has, for the first time, called into question Dominion Energy’s dominance of Virginia politics. Climate Hawks Vote is building real grassroots political power for the climate movement. Together we directed 299 volunteers to help make phone calls out-of-state and knock doors in-state. More than 1,025 climate hawks donated $31,398.40 to help fund Tom’s campaign. And tens of thousands of Virginia voters saw Tom’s climate-hawk message through Internet advertisements our members funded.Progress can still be made in Virginia: the Democratic winner, Ralph Northam, is miles ahead on climate of the fossil-fool Republican Ed Gillespie, who is backed by George W. Bush, Karl Rove, and fracking and coal billionaires. Northam is committed to the Paris Agreement and preventing oil drilling off Virginia’s coasts. It will be up to us to get him to cut his dirty ties to Dominion and its fracked-gas pipeline projects, though.
Tuesday’s results reminded us: Our democracy is being drowned in this tidal wave of carbon cash. Money from the fossil fuel industry has brought progress on climate action to a standstill. The way we get rid of the roadblocks is by asking public officials, and candidates running for elected office, to stop taking dirty money from oil, gas, and coal companies.
We’re so proud of all of the work climate hawks like you did to help Tom run a clean race.
Your fellow climate hawks,
RL & Brad

"No more in empty words I'll deal - Creation's wellsprings I'll reveal!” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in Faust

Hey! Are you ready for summer? We are, and we wanted to give you a little peak behind the curtain at The Mission.
Here’s what we've been up to:
What We’re Reading - Faust, by Goethe. It's a challenging but rewarding read about failure and redemption.
We're also reading The Evolutionary Mind: Conversations on Science, Imagination & Spirit, by Sheldrake, McKenna, and Abraham. They make science fun to read.
What We’re Listening to - The Theory of Everything, by Jóhann Jóhannsson. This is the soundtrack for the biographical movie about Stephen Hawking and his first wife Jane Wilde Hawking.
And MitiS's latest remix with Seven Lions just came out...
What We’re Watching - Louis C.K. 2017, a Netflix comedy special where Louis muses on religion, love, drugs, and more. He masterfully crosses the line so many times... and makes us glad he did.
