NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY-VUKOVAR AND SRIJEM

What's your first impression of the Apple HomePod?
Dear CNET members,

This week, Apple had a lot to share at its Worldwide Developers conference -- announcements ranged from a new iMac Pro and iPad Pro to iOS 11 and MacOS High Sierra, to Apple's first crack at AR (augmented reality). If you missed yesterday's event, no worries, we got you all covered right here. However what made the biggest splash at WWDC was Apple debuting the HomePod, the company's own version of a smart speaker like Amazon Echo or Google Home allowing you to control connected gadgets, play music, get weather and news reports and so on. This Siri-powered speaker has been rumored for months, and honestly I was surprised at how long it took Apple to come out with one -- given that Siri, Apple's personal assistant, has been integrated into iPhones since 2012. It's about time, Apple! The Apple HomePod will be available in December 2017 and will cost you only $349 to own. Wait a minute, a whopping $349?! Whoa, that price is a bit steep there, especially when the Google Home costs $130 and the Echo line comes in versions that start at $50. Apple spent most of the time touting superior sound quality as the HomePod's key feature and didn't spend as much time talking about voice recognition and compatibility with other smart home products.I know the HomePod was just announced and there is only a limited amount of information so far. However, I'd like to get a sense of what you think. Can Apple be competitive in this space given how late it is in coming to the game? What about the price of $349, is it reasonable or ridiculous? If you currently own a Google Home or an Amazon Echo device, what would the HomePod need to offer to get you to switch to it? Give this HomeHub preview a read and the video a watch, and when you're ready, sound off in the comments section about your overall reaction to the HomePod.

So, the leader in innovation and cutting edge design comes out with a standalone speaker? Seems that the market is crowded with these things already.

Problem is "Siri Integration" is not a feature at this point, it's a bug! Siri is easily the least capable of the major voice assistants, so unless the AI gets a big upgrade before this launches it is going to suck. Of course that may not matter too much when it comes to sales since it has the Apple logo on it...

$349 is steep, especially considering Amazon's Echo Show has an integrated touchscreen for just $230. Apple seems to be leaning on its claims of "superior sound quality" to justify the price. We'll have to test it out to see if it really is a better speaker -- and if that makes it worthwhile.

Well summer's almost here, how's that bikini bod going, New Yorkers? 🙈
LOL, we feel you, it's a rough life, especially when there's so much delish food here in NYC. Like BareBurger's new "impossible" burger. 🍔

Commute From Hell

Apparently the “F” in F train stands for “f*ck you."
Yesterday, a southbound F train faced a mechanical issue in the middle of an underground tunnel. But it wasn’t your typical “we apologize for the delay due to mechanical issues.” Passengers were stuck for almost an hour in darkness with no air conditioning. If you’re claustrophobic at all, this may just be your worst nightmare. Desperate passengers tried to pry open the doors with umbrellas, while both men and women were stripping down to get some relief. Windows fogged up and passengers even etched lines like “we will survive” onto the steam. We all know how sh*tty the MTA is, but this is just absurd.

Meat the Meatless Burger

Vegetarians and vegans rejoice! Bareburger is doing the impossible.
That is, the chain is introducing a completely meatless burger patty that looks and tastes just like their classic beef burger. It’s only being served right now at their Laguardia location (lol), but we’re hyped for its debut in the rest of the city’s locations.

Climate Hawks Vote

Friends:
The number-one question I’m hearing right now is “Trump pulled out of the Paris climate agreement. What can I do to fight back?”
I respond: “Right now, our number-one best response to Trump’s climate disaster is to help climate hawk Tom Perriello become the Democratic nominee for Virginia governor next Tuesday, June 13th.” Can you pick up the phone and make some calls for Tom Perriello, a climate hawk running against Trump? Yes, I can phonebank for Tom. The rise of the politics of Trumpist climate denial is rooted in the perceived political weakness of the climate movement. As the New York Times recently wrote, “Until people vote on the issue, Republicans will find it politically safer to question climate science and policy than to alienate moneyed groups like Americans for Prosperity.”This is the climate movement’s single best opportunity to prove that climate activists can swing a race in advance of the 2018 midterms. From day one, Tom has been running as a fierce climate hawk standing up to fossil-fuel money and Donald Trump — and his Republican and Democratic opponents have been touting fracking and taking fossil-fuel cash from Dominion Energy. This a fight where our action can make a huge difference.Tom needs your help—and we need to show our strength. Can you pick up the phone and make some calls? Yes, I can join my fellow climate hawks and phonebank for Tom.No, I can’t volunteer, but I can chip in $3.50 to help compete with Dominion’s dirty money.
Thanks for everything you’re doing!
RL Miller, for Climate Hawks Vote

VUKOVAR AND SRIJEM, part 1, 2 and 3
Since we both have a mutual friend, Miljenko Maric, from Croatia, I am writing you this e-mail hoping that you will respond. We just want to know if you are interested in this offer or not because we truly believe that we have a greatmaterial that could attract an attention of the external (US) market, but theaudience likewise."Studio 23" is a croatian film production company founded in 2005 by Nenad Sestic from Zadar, Croatia, with the aim of producing and developing films, video and television programming. We are equipped with a digital technology and we have a full creative control over the performance of demanding projects limited by short time deadlines.
With more over than 10 years working in the film and television production we deal with:
- image and sound recording and editing
- visual special effects
- image color correction
- 3D modeling and animation and
- film, video and audio production and postproduction.

We have an excellent business proposal considering that you might be interested in war themes movies, especially when it comes to Croatian War of Independence. Pilot movie "Winners" (whose theme was war actions in Zadar area from 1991 until 1995), was broadcasted on 22nd January 2009, at 20:30 hours, at Croatian Radio television. Namely, after the same was broadcasted on Croatian Radio television, there has been brought out a great interest for recording separate episodes which topics were dictated by the particular contents beyond the pilot movie after which started its realization. So far, 9 documentary movies/episodes are completed and ready for sale. Not even one episode has been broadcasted so far!
Osijek is the main urban center of Eastern Slavonia. After the enemy intelligence processing, in May 1991, the area north of Osijek on the left side of Drava River called Baranja was occupied. Enclaves with predominantly Croatian population on the right side of Drava River were cut off as well. This has created a basis for initiating the battle for Osijek that lasted until the end of 1991 with great human casualties and destruction.
The southern part of the Eastern Slavonia battlefield marked the battle for Vukovar. Vukovar was close to the main directions of the enemy forces from Serbia to Zagreb. At the very beginning of the aggression, enemy forces created an impression that in Vukovar were concentrated strong Croatian forces. In fear of possible side impact of the Croatian forces, the enemy started the battle for Vukovar, which became the most important resistance point, Croatian Alamo, whose sacrifice has enabled Croatian defense.
After taking the initial positions and cutting off part of the Croatian enclaves north of the forested, mountainous parts of Gacka and Lika, the battles for this area had started. This inhabited, fertile area was standing across the front of a hostile breaking through, whose aim was cutting Croatia. To reach the coast, enemies have had to cross Gacka and Lika, but in September 1991, the Croatian forces had taken the first liberation action in the Croatian War of Independence. Through bloody battles, they defended, overtook and defeated the enemy forces.
Behind the name of the Southern battlefield lies a battle for Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik and its wider area were entirely demilitarized, with no inter-ethnic conflicts. Beginning of the war in Croatia, Montenegrin government has seen as an opportunity to expand its borders, while the main goal of the enemy forces was breakthrough the valley of the Neretva River and download the Port of Ploce, a strategic resource and transportation corridor. The enemy surrounded Dubrovnik, but Croatians defended it, although with terrible victims and poorly armed defenders. Croatian army had stopped enemy forces on the approaches to the valley by the end of 1991. In 1992 began an offensive by Croatian forces that stabilize the dividing line. Despite intense general attack of the enemy forces, Croatian forces broke, mastered all the valley of the Neretva River, rejected the enemy and launched quick lightning unblocking of Dubrovnik. In a series of operations by autumn 1992, Croatian army liberated the entire Dubrovnik area and the enemy forces heavily repressed by heavy sacrifices and panic escape. Croatian Life in Poetry was founded in 2004 by Ted Kooser, the 13th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry in order to create a space and a presence for poetry in American culture. As part of the project, Ted Kooser provided newspapers and online periodicals with a free weekly column that featured a poem from a contemporary Croatian poet, film.... Publications were able to register and to reprint the text in order to promote poets and to help their works read a wider, general audience. For more information about the project, and for archives of previous columns, please visit: www.hssd.hr Poetry and film 180 is designed to make it easy for students to hear or read a poem on each of the 180 days of the school year. I have selected the poems you will find here with high school students in mind. They are intended to be listened to, and I suggest that all members of the school community be included as readers. A great time for the readings would be following the end of daily announcements over the public address

Dear FRIENDS,

Now it's OK to insult Jesus from your cell phone!
Nothing's sacred anymore...
...not even God!
There's a smartphone application available called Meme Generator. The application allows the user to choose an image and place text on the image, creating what is called a meme.Within the gallery of images in the app to choose from, one of the images is Ecce Homo Potato Jesus. This image refers to a botched restoration of an image of Our Lord in Spain. The face of Jesus is contorted and disfigured. After the Internet caught wind of the botched restoration, blasphemous memes began to spread in which the title Potato Jesus stuck.Tell Zombodroid offending Jesus is bad for business! Another image in the app is Guido Jesus. It depicts a muscular man with long dark hair, wearing a white skin-tight shirt, sporting gold jewelry and posing for a selfie. Clearly this image is not there to increase devotion and love to Our Lord and Redeemer. One can only imagine the horrible memes, which would result from such a terrible and offensive image titled Guido Jesus.  Although Zombodroid, the developer of the application, claims that the images do not necessarily reflect their opinions, but they promote their app using these blasphemous images anyway. The application permits the opportunity to mock Our Lord Jesus Christ, something that should never be done. This is insulting to Our Lord Jesus and those who truly love Him.Make your voice heard for the honor and love of Our Lord, demand that Zombodroid remove these images unless they want to be associated with promoting blasphemy.
Until next time, I remain
Sincerely yours,

John Horvat
