No Faith in Credit

CREDIT: AP/PABLO MARTINEZ MONSIVAIS
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt doesn’t think now is the best time to talk about climate change. He’s right: the best time probably would have been long before Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Jose — all “once in a generation” storms — threatened the U.S within a month.
Meanwhile, Rush Limbaugh — who doesn’t even believe in climate change and who declared Hurricane Irma a liberal plot — is among those evacuating South Florida before the storm makes landfall.

Equifax, one of the largest credit monitoring firms, is the latest hacking victim that has left tens of millions of Americans vulnerable. Several executives are also under intense scrutiny after it was revealed they sold off stock before the company publicly announced the breach. Equifax is offering anxious customers free identity theft protection services, but it comes with a big catch.

Wildfires fueled by dry weather and blazing temperatures are scorching through the West, causing problems for the local infrastructure and threatening the entire region’s water supply.
Google Play removed Iranian apps from its store this week, in compliance with 22-year old U.S. sanctions against Iran. It’s an inconvenience for Iranian users, but could also signal something far worse.

To use time and effort to address it at this point is very, very insensitive to the people in Florida.” — EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, downplaying the impact that climate change is having on the severity of recent hurricanes

Week 33, in one sentence: President Trump once again lashed out at James Comey over his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server; expelled three Russian diplomatic compounds; traveled to Texas and Louisiana after Hurricane Harvey with Melania; donated $1 million to Harvey relief efforts; insulted China and South Korea after North Korea’s latest nuclear test, then threatened to stop all trade with any country doing business with Pyongyang; announced that he’d end DACA but gave Congress a six-month window to replace it; was promptly sued by 15 attorneys general over that decision; began selling gold “presidential medals” with his face on them to fund his re-election campaign; reached an instant compromise with top Democrats on a budget deal, which infuriated Republicans; warned that Hurricane Irma “looks like it could be something that will be not good”; liedabout American tax rates again; weathered another blow to his travel ban from a federal appeals court; and tweeted out a small reassurance to DACA recipients — thanks to Nancy Pelosi.

Day 225 — September 1

Comey at me (again), bro

Trump once again lashed out at former FBI director James Comey, whom the president fired, over his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. “Wow, looks like James Comey exonerated Hillary Clinton long before the investigation was over,” Trump tweeted. “A rigged system!” The president was presumably referring to a statement from two Republican senators who said that Comey began drafting his recommendation that Clinton not be charged before interviewing some of her key aides.
Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov blamed Barack Obama for the deterioration of the relationship between the Kremlin and the White House after Trump’s State Department ordered the closing of  three Russian diplomatic compounds in the U.S. Lavrov said President Trump hasn’t been able to make “constructive proposals” since Obama triggered an “exchange of sanctions” in retaliation to Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Day 226 — September 2

Comforter-in-chief

Trump and first lady Melania Trump returned to Texas to meet with evacuees who had fled Hurricane Harvey. The president voiced a more empathic and hands-on approach than he had during his previous visit, when he boasted about the size of the crowd that came to see him speak.
The couple later traveled to Louisiana, which also experienced flooding from Harvey, to meet with troops and volunteers.

Day 227 — September 3

Still trying to deal with North Korea

The president managed to insult China and South Korea while responding to North Korea’s latest nuclear run — one that caused an explosion 10 times bigger than anything Pyongyang had tested before. Trump called North Korea an “embarrassment to China” and warned that “appeasement” would not work for South Korea.

Trump also tweeted that the U.S. is considering “stopping all trade with any country doing business with North Korea.”

The opioid crisis is an unprecedented public health emergency, and it's forcing us to rethink how we approach addiction. For the second edition of VICE News’ issues, we looked at the nationwide movement toward recovery already underway. Read more here.

Day 228 — September 4

CEOs speak out

The CEOs of companies like AT&T, Wells Fargo, Univision, and dozens more pleaded with the president to keep DACA in place.
"Dreamers are vital to the future of our companies and our economy. With them, we grow and create jobs," the group wrote in an open letter to Trump. "They are part of why we will continue to have a global competitive advantage."

Trump tweeted out Happy Labor Day to his Twitter followers with a picture of himself and Melania captioned with a message that America’s future will be built by “American hands, American labor, American iron, aluminum, and steel.” Trump has consistently pushed a crackdown on imported steel in an effort to rebuild Rust Belt cities that elected him.

Day 229 — September 5

Delivering on his promise

Trump, in effect, announced that he would end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in a tweet: “Congress, get ready to do your job - DACA!” The program, implemented by Obama via executive order in 2012, has deferred the deportation of nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants who arrive in the U.S. as children. During his campaign, Trump had promised to repeal the program on Day One of his tenure.
Later in the day, Attorney General Jeff Sessions formally announced that the U.S. would stop accepting applications immediately, but Congress has a six-month window before DACA officially ends to pass a law to replace it.
Protests erupted across the country as the news broke. Obama condemnedTrump’s decision and called the phase-out of DACA “wrong,” “self-defeating,” and “cruel.”
Trump and Melania personally pledged to donate $1 million to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

To deflect a reporter’s question about whether Russia was planning for Trump’s impeachment, Vladimir Putin proclaimed that Trump is “not my bride, and I am not his groom.”

Day 230 — September 6

And then came the lawsuits

Attorneys general from 15 states and the District of Columbia swiftly responded to Trump’s decision to end DACA with a lawsuit. The suit posits that the DACA repeal is discriminatory because 79 percent of the nearly 800,000 recipients are of Mexican descent and 93 percent are Latino. Immigrant rights organizations have also mounted their defenses.
Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign began peddling gold “presidential medals” — not to be confused with the President Medal of Freedom, the highest honor the president can bestow on a U.S. citizen. But for the low price of just $45, you can own a similar-sounding keepsake with an engraving of Trump’s face.
Trump reached a budget deal with top Democrats to keep funding government operations until mid-December and raise America’s debt limit to make sure money was immediately poured into hurricane relief — and in the process steamrolled his own party’s leaders. Some Republicans were furious with the self-described “deal-making” president for caving to Democrats.
Regardless, Trump reportedly raved to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi about all the positive press coverage his compromise budget bill received.
Trump warned of Hurricane Irma — which has already devastated the Caribbean and could hit Florida as early as Saturday — in typical Trump style. “Hurricane looks like largest ever recorded in Atlantic!” Trump tweeted. The president had approved an emergency declaration for Florida a day earlier. The president also told reporters in the Oval Office that Irma “looks like it could be something that will be not good. Believe me, not good.”
Trump is still lying about American taxes. The president called the U.S. “the highest taxed nation in the world” in a tweet. In reality, the U.S. placessomewhere near the middle or bottom of the OECD countries using typical tax metrics. It’s a claim he’s made a few times in the past — and he was wrong on those occasions, too.
Trump’s tweet about American taxes came in preparation for a speech about tax cuts, one of his key campaign promises, in North Dakota. And just in time: House Republicans returned to Washington this week to begin work on a tax-cut bill that would benefit businesses and the wealthiest Americans.

During his trip to North Dakota, Trump did the unexpected: He praised a Democrat. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, who represents North Dakota, flew with Trump on Air Force One for the event. As he beckoned Heitkamp onto the stage, Trump called her a “good woman.”

Day 231 — September 7

Don Jr. goes on record

Donald Trump Jr. testified behind closed doors to the Senate Judiciary Committee about his meeting at Trump Tower last year with a Russian lawyer who promised dirt on Hillary Clinton. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, said there were “gaps” in Don Jr.’s testimony and that he expects Trump’s eldest son to return for a public hearing.
Trump tweeted out a small reassurance to DACA recipients that they have “nothing to worry about” throughout the six-month window he gave Congress to pass a law to replace it. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi — often one of Trump’s chief opponents — had urged the president to tweet out the message, two sources told CNN.
Trump’s travel ban on people from six Muslim-majority countries weathered another defeat when a federal appeals court rejected his administration’s efforts to deny grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins of Americans entry to the U.S.
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced she will review and perhaps rewrite rules on how universities should handle sexual assault on campuses, which she believes currently favor sexual assault survivors over students accused of rape.

Hurricane Irma headed for "catastrophic" impact… Lack of preparedness causes panic
Mike Adams
There’s something to be said about getting out of the way when bad things are headed in your direction.
Updated storm tracks from the NOAA predict the storm savaging Miami, then barreling its way through Georgia and even Tennessee. Fuel shortages are being reported across Florida, causing some residents to be unable to flee.
Now we’re learning that the power in parts of Florida could be out for days or weeks.
One of the irrefutable truths about preparedness is that the greatest threat comes from the masses of unprepared people who panic.

 Lessons from Activist Boot Camp

Portrait of Jennifer LuxtonAs more unprecedented hurricanes wreak havoc, and as falling ash clouds the skies here in the Pacific Northwest, we’re experiencing symptoms of climate change firsthand. How do we build resilience? I recommend this story from our new Just Transition issue on how to feed ourselves in a time of climate crisis. My hope for a habitable planet is also why I decided to attend boot camp for activists. I’m excited to share the lessons I learned with you in this new illustrated essay. Finally, don’t miss Melissa Hellmann’s three-part series onreproductive rights in Kentucky, below.
