Who would benefit from a $15 minimum wage?

Since 2009, the federal minimum wage has remained at $7.25. In a new report, EPI’s David Cooper looks at the impact of the Raise the Wage Act of 2017, which would gradually raise the federal minimum wage to $15 by 2024, link it to changes in the median wage thereafter, and gradually eliminate the lower minimum wage for tipped workers. Cooper finds the proposed bill would benefit 41.5 million workers—nearly 30 percent of the workforce. Read the report »

The impact of President Trump’s first 100 days on working people

Yesterday marked President Trump’s 100th day in office. In a new report, EPI evaluates President Trump’s actions during his first 100 days and analyzes their impact on this nation’s working people and on our economy. The authors find that President has a pattern of siding against working people— specific actions include delaying and blocking workplace safety rules and advancing nominees for labor secretary who are hostile to workers’ rights and protections. Stay up to date on actions by the Trump administration and Congress that have an impact on working people by following the Perkins Project’s policy watch.

Remembering lost workers on Workers’ Memorial Day

April 28 was Workers’ Memorial Day—an international day of remembrance for workers killed, disabled, or made ill on the job. The day is also an opportunity to highlight the preventable nature of most work-related deaths, injuries, and illnesses and to take action to fight for improvements in workplace safety. According to a panelist at a Workers’ Memorial Day event hosted by EPI and NELP (the National Employment Law Project), 13 people lose their lives every day in the workplace—“13 too many,” representing “13 families who have lost loved ones.”

The importance of Workers’ Memorial Day

In a new article, EPI’s Marni von Wilpert talks about the importance of honoring the lives of workers killed on the job by continuing to fight for safety rules that protect workers. She notes that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) recordkeeping rule—which was designed to improve workplace safety by identifying and addressing patterns of safety issues—was reversed by President Trump and congressional Republicans earlier this year.

EPI in the news

In an interview with WCVB-TV, EPI’s Josh Bivens says claims that President Trump’s proposed tax plan will “unleash so much growth it’ll finance itself” are “completely laughable.” Bivens says the plan would benefit the rich while doing little to help low- and middle-income families. | Trump administration unveils tax plan »
The Huffington Post cited EPI’s analysis of the Raise the Wage Act of 2017, writing that “the bill would ensure that in 2019 the minimum wage would exceed the inflation-adjusted peak it reached in 1968.” | Bernie Sanders and Democrats are introducing a new $15 minimum wage bill »
The Guardian quoted EPI’s Hunter Blair on President Trump’s proposed tax reform that would slash the corporate tax rate from 39.6 percent to 15 percent. “According to the treasury, 43% of corporate tax is paid for by the top 1%. We have tried this supply side economics before; trickle down just doesn’t work,” Blair said. | Trump to unveil proposal for slashing corporate tax rate to 15% »
Think Progress spoke to EPI’s Ben Zipperer about the Democrats’ effort to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 by 2024. “The lowest-paid workers in the U.S. economy earn less than what their counterparts did 50 years ago, which is just absolutely crazy and socially irresponsible,” said Zipperer. | Democrats are now all on board with a $15 minimum wage »
In a Washington Post story, EPI’s Lawrence Mishel challenged critics of a national $15 minimum wage. Per Mishel, those who say the increase will “kill jobs” (and imply they oppose the increase out of concern for low-wage workers) are being disingenuous and are relying on outdated arguments.| Sanders and 21 Democrats introduce bill to raise minimum wage to $15 an hour »
