POSLOVNI VIJESNIK: EU VOZI U VIŠE BRZINA NE SMIJEMO OSTATI ZADNJI

"What separates us from the animals, what separates us from the chaos, is our ability to mourn people we’ve never met."
–David Levithan

News that matters

It’s the morning after hurricane Irma, and the US Navy is sending an aircraft carrier to assist the rescue efforts.

At 8:36am ET this morning, the US observed a moment of silence on the sixteenth year anniversary of 9/11.

As humans, we have an extremely limited emotional vocabulary. This is a huge impediment to expressing ourselves, connecting with others, and becoming the best versions of ourselves. As the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein famously said, “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.” If we don’t have the correct words to characterize and articulate our emotional states, our communication is seriously limited. Scientists are finally starting to address this challenge, as researchers from UC Berkeley recently discovered there are far more distinct emotional states than they previously thought.

What we're reading

Speaking of Ludwig Wittgenstein, the man was a genius:
“What has to be overcome is not difficulty of the intellect but of the will.”
To explore his ideas, check out his wikiquote page, or his excellent (and short) book, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus.

What we're listening to

The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness by The National.
Talk about awesome names for a song. Humans are complex systems, and we only get REM sleep in… you guessed it… total darkness.

What we're watching

How To Be Optimistic (4:31) by Jordan Peterson.
This is a brief story about Shackleton, The Endurance, and a parable about personal growth.

16 years after 9/11, New Yorkers are still proving that we will always take care of each other, whether it's feeding the hungry, or standing up for our dreamers. ❤️️
Citi Bike is making itself even more accessible to everyone, by setting up shop in 5 new neighborhoods. 🚲
Even if you've lived in this city for what feels like forever, there will always be new places to discover– like who has even heard of Little Tokyo🤔
And apparently, the best doughnuts in the city have been hiding right in plain sight🍩
There are a few things that are not-so-great about living in NYC, but nothing, literally nothing, is worse than apartment hunting. 😵
Well, except maybe job hunting. But with Shapr, it's not so hard to make connections at all. 💯
If you need a break from NYC, we can't blame you, and you'll definitely feel the wanderlust after checking out our own jetsetter's latest adventure✈
Never Forget

We all say “never forget.” But how, exactly, do you remember?
16 years later and we all have our 9/11 rituals. Maybe it’s trying to observe a moment of silence even if it’s with your Uber driver.
For many, 9/11 is becoming a day to give back– it’s already a National Day of Service and Remembrance, or 9/11 Day for short.
Today’s 9/11 Day Packout gathers over 2,500 volunteers to the Intrepid Museum to pack over half a million meals for the hungry.
They’ll help needy families in the New York area and in the wake of Harvey, some will also go to Houston as emergency food.
It’s one big do-gooder party, and it doesn’t stop today–these events happen all year round!

#Resist

Defending the DREAM!
These days, we’re resisting on the reg and this weekend was no different.
Protestors gathered in Columbus Circle to express support for DACA and condemn President Trump’s decision to end it.
The demonstrators were at least three thousand strong and marched to Trump Tower to confront the president.
But don’t worry if you missed out on the action– there’s many more rallies this week.

Donut Worry, Be Happy

If New York City has taught us anything in the past ten years, it’s that doughnuts can truly solve any trauma that this city serves up to us.
That pun was completely unintentional and no, we’re not sorry about it.
But you don’t have to look too far to get your holey pastry-lovin’ groove on (okay that one was intentional and we’re sorry).
Turns out some glazed goodness has been hiding out inside a car wash. Who knew you could get such a tasty treat while watching your car get waxed?
Okay, so it’s not your car. But we’re not judging.

Hello Friends,
I am happy to announce that the film-version of my legacy project, the Broadway musical Allegiance, will be making a much-requested return to movie theaters all over the United States on December 7th
The date is significant as it is the anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day, which set in motion the internment of 120,000 Americans like me, for no crime other than looking like the enemy who attacked us.

As you know by now, this Broadway show was inspired by my very own experiences, after my family was rounded up at gunpoint and shipped off to prison camps. Besides Yours Truly, the film features some of Broadway’s finest talent, like Tony Award Winner Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon), Telly Leung (“Glee”,Rent, Aladdin) and Katie Rose Clarke (Wicked, Miss Saigon). I am proud that the film can continue to reach newer generations everywhere, reminding us of the dangers that come when fear and prejudice override human compassion.

As a treat to all of you fans, this new showing of Allegiance will include additional footage from the production’s vault, with interviews with the cast, as well as footage from a special ceremony in Hawaii honoring the 442nd regimental combat team— the most decorated unit of the U.S. Army during WWII. Finding a showing near you is as easy as clicking here and typing in your zip code, and - especially if you saw it already - I highly encourage you to bring someone to the December 7th showing with whom you want to share this unique experience.

I hope to see you all at the movies.

Thank you,
George

Explore. Enjoy. Protect.
Irma is not stopping and communities need YOUR help. You can help by creating a fundraising page, and 100% of the money you raise will support on-the-ground relief and recovery efforts happening now.

RESPECTED FRIENDS,

The devastation in the Caribbean, Florida and Georgia wrought by Hurricane Irma is simply unreal -- and the storm continues. Irma has headed north toward the Carolinas, and a flash flooding emergency has been declared in Charleston. In Florida, over half the state doesn't have power. Irma wiped out entire roads in the Keys, slowing relief efforts and triggering what local officials are calling a humanitarian crisis. Jacksonville is suffering waist-deep flooding, and storm surges up to six feet above high tide threaten densely populated areas along the state's western coastline. For those that evacuated, it may be weeks before they're able to return home.In Puerto Rico many thousands remain without power and the island has become a hub for assisting those from other islands which suffered catastrophic destruction. In Georgia, severe winds and rain have left hundreds of thousands without power, with tropical storm-force winds and flash flooding expected in the next few days.Recovery from Irma will be brutal. In addition to damaged homes and lost lives, residents throughout the southern coastal regions will likely endure the same exposure to toxic chemicals that we're seeing in Texas.
Support hurricane recovery
It's all hands on deck -- and the Sierra Club's among those hands. Together, we've already raised over $46,000 for on-the-ground recovery efforts. With your help, we can raise even more to support community-based partners in emergency relief efforts -- including our Chapters in Florida, Puerto Rico, and Georgia.
Create an Irma Recovery fundraising page today, and ask your family, friends, and co-workers to donate. Remember, 100% of funds will be rushed to local groups helping those impacted by this record-breaking storm.
Since the day Irma hit the Caribbean, refugees from neighboring islands have flooded to Puerto Rico's already-full hospitals and refugee centers. Electricity is coming back slowly, but much of the island is still in the dark -- and parts are expected to be without power for many months to come. Tens of thousands are without safe water, and the threat of poisonous chemicals -- particularly large amounts of toxic coal ash -- is likely to emerge. As we saw with Harvey in Texas, Irma threatens the lives and livelihoods of the most vulnerable everywhere: low-income communities, communities of color and undocumented immigrants. There are more than 80 Superfund sites that have been in Irma's path, from South Florida to North Carolina, whose toxic contents menace surrounding neighborhoods and drinking water supplies -- as well as chemical plants, nuclear generators, refineries and wastewater treatment facilities.
Groups are working around the clock to bring help to their neighbors, assess the environmental damage and begin planning for a just and equitable recovery. When you create a fundraising page, it will help the Sierra Club and our local partners ensure that no community is left behind. Every dollar helps support on-the-ground relief and recovery efforts for those impacted by Hurricane Irma's truly historic devastation. Create your page now. We know many of you throughout the southern U.S. remain in the hurricane's likely path. If Irma hits your state, the Sierra Club will be there too, supporting community-led recovery and relief efforts near you.
Our thoughts are with you and your loved ones at this truly desperate hour. Know that the Sierra Club stands ready, with the help of friends like you, to support all Americans impacted by this unprecedented and unrelenting storm.

Sincerely,

STJEPAN TOKIC CROATIA

Flooding, Devastation As Irma Leaves Florida Reeling

Bryan Anselm is a freelance photographer based in New York whose work focuses on human rights and forced migration, in addition to post-conflict recovery in sub-Saharan Africa.

He traveled to Florida to report on the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. In this slideshow, he documents just how vulnerable South Florida communities have become to the flooding and devastation from monster hurricanes.

Upwards of 75 percent of the people in South Florida live along the coast. As they pick up the pieces left behind by this record-breaking storm, questions remain about the extent of the destruction, and an uncertain future.

Good morning from Washington, where officials from President Trump down continue to respond to the violent moves of Hurricane Irma, and where our hearts are with those in her path. Despite what some claim, climate change isn't behind Irma or Harvey, Nick Loris writes. On the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, government can do only so much to thwart Islamist terrorism, Fred Lucas reports.
