Roads are too restrictive- Unmanned ghost ships are next on the automation radar

Week 34, in one sentence: President Trump was sued by the University of California and the state of California over his decision to rescind DACA; scoreda legal victory when the Supreme Court temporarily upheld part of his travel ban; was insulted by the pope — twice; visited Florida to survey the Hurricane Irma damage; invited the nation’s two top Democrats — Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer — to dinner at the White House without inviting any top Republicans; denied that he had reached a deal with Pelosi and Schumer to save DACA, even though the pair announced there was a deal; went on to defend the “accomplished young people” protected under DACA, a program he decided last week to rescind; said the border wall “was already under construction” because workers are repairing old fences and walls; traded barbs (again) with his long-vanquished election opponent, Hillary Clinton; once again suggested both sides were to blame for the violence in Charlottesville in August; went after ESPN because an anchor called him a white supremacist; and decried “loser terrorists” after a bomb was detonated on a London Underground train.

Day 232 — September 8

Fighting for DACA

The University of California filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for its decision to rescind DACA, the program that protects nearly 800,000 immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children, aka Dreamers. The lawsuit argues that the U.S. has “benefitted enormously from the presence of the Dreamers,” and Trump’s decision is “based on nothing more than unreasoned executive whim.”

Day 233 — September 9

"Here comes Irma"

Trump tweeted out several warnings about Hurricane Irma, the storm he previously called “something that will be not good.”

“Here comes Irma,” the president tweeted. “God bless everyone!”

Day 234 — September 10

A rare day of silence

Trump didn’t tweet… at all. It’s extremely rare for the president to stay off Twitter. One of the few other times he went radio silent was the day that fired FBI Director James Comey testified before Congress.

VICE News' coverage

Day 235 — September 11

The war over immigration continues

It was a big day for legal fights over Trump’s immigration policy.
The Supreme Court delivered a blow to opponents of Trump’s travel ban. The nation’s highest court decided that extended relatives — including grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins — as well as refugees working with a U.S. resettlement agency would have to wait until this fall when it makes a decision on Trump’s ban on travel from six Muslim-majority countries. An appeals court had previously allowed these relatives into the U.S. if they had relatives in the country.
Meanwhile, California — following the lead of its state university system — sued the Trump administration over its decision to repeal the DACA. One in four of the almost 800,000 undocumented immigrants the program protects live in California.
Pope Francis dug into Trump (once again) by saying the U.S. president isn’t so pro-life if he isn’t willing to protect young immigrants. The pope also criticized climate change deniers (like Trump). “Man is stupid,” Francis said, referencing the Old Testament.
Reports surfaced that some of Trump’s lawyers back in June were pushing to get Jared Kushner out of the White House, prompting their aides to draft a statement explaining his resignation — you know, just in case. From the Wall Street Journal:
Among their concerns was that Mr. Kushner was the adviser closest to the president who had the most dealings with Russian officials and businesspeople during the campaign and transition, some of which are currently being examined by federal investigators and congressional oversight panels. Mr. Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law and confidant, has said he had four such meetings or interactions.
Another issue was Mr. Kushner’s initial omission of any contacts with foreign officials from the form required to obtain a security clearance. He later updated the form several times to include what he has said were more than 100 contacts with foreign officials.

Day 236 — September 12

Condemn white supremacy, pretty please?

The House and Senate are trying to force Trump to condemn white supremacy, after he’s repeatedly placed blame on “both sides” after violent white supremacists rioted in Charlottesville. The congressional bodies unanimously passed a resolution that condemned the racist violence and called on Trump and his administration to “speak out against hate groups that espouse racism, extremism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and white supremacy.”
Trump is expected to slash refugee levels to the lowest in a generation, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation told VICE News. Trump plans to cap refugee admissions for the 2018 fiscal year at no more than 50,000. That’s less than half as many as President Obama authorized last year.
While Trump’s campaign team has already turned over some documents for the Russia investigation, one of Trump’s attorneys confirmed to The Daily Beast that the deliveries have been stepped up. The campaign is in “total cooperation” with special counsel Robert Mueller, the attorney said.
In many ways, Mueller is “going for the kill,” as Republicans close to the White House told Axios:
  • Digging deep into the idea that Trump’s firing of Comey could be obstruction of justice
  • Using an early draft of the White House’s justification for firing Comey against Trump
Meanwhile, lawyers representing current and former members of Trump’s team have reportedly been delivering harsh warnings to their clients about lying during high-profile testimonies to Congress. From Politico:
Several of the lawyers representing current and former aides told POLITICO they’re actively warning their clients that any bonds connecting them to Trump won’t protect them from criminal charges if federal prosecutors can nail them for perjury, making false statements or obstruction of justice.
“What I always tell clients is you can’t protect anybody. You can only hurt yourself,” said a lawyer representing a client involved in the Russia probe. The attorney added that any overt attempts to protect Trump will raise wider suspicions of a cover-up, making matters “worse for everybody.”
And let’s not forget Michael Flynn. Democrats in Congress wrote Mueller a letter after they uncovered more dirt on the former national security adviser: While renewing his security clearance, Flynn concealed more than a dozen foreign contacts and overseas trips. As it turns out, those omissions could violate federal law.

It’s no secret that Flynn, when he was still allowed in the Oval Office, pushed for his own “Marshall Plan” that would have put dozens of nuclear reactors across the Middle East. But sources close to Trump at the time told Politico that Flynn was paid at least $25,000 to push the agenda — by its backers, some of which may have been Russian companies.

Day 237 — September 13

Let's make a deal

The nation’s two top Democrats — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer — announced they had come to a deal with President Trump to save DACA. The deal “agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides,” according to Schumer and Pelosi. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, however, said that excluding the wall was “certainly not agreed to.”
Republicans, of course, were furious. Trump had invited the Democratic pair to dinner at the White House (without inviting any Republican leaders). It’s the second time in a week that Trump compromised with top Democrats.
Despite the widening Russia investigation, Trump can’t seem to let the Comey thing go. From Axios:
Behind the scenes in the West Wing, President Trump continues to rant and brood about former FBI Director Jim Comey and the Russia investigation that got him fired. Trump tells aides and visitors that the probe now being run by special counsel Bob Mueller is a witch hunt, and that Comey was a leaker.
In the last couple weeks, attacks on Comey from Republicans — on Twitter, in statements, and even from the White House — have also intensified.
Now, Flynn’s son, Michael G. Flynn, is being investigated as part of the Russia probe, four current and former government officials told NBC. Although it’s unclear when he came under scrutiny, it has at least something to do with his dad’s lobbying firm, the Flynn Intel Group, whose documents have already been subpoenaed.
Tim Scott of South Carolina, the Senate’s only black Republican, agreedto meet with Trump after telling VICE News that he believes the president’s “moral authority is compromised” by his comments that equated neo-Nazis with counterprotesters in Charlottesville. Scott said he was “encouraged” by the meeting but wasn’t ready to forgive Trump’s comments just yet.

Day 238 — September 14

But wait, the wall

Trump responded to Pelosi and Schumer’s announcement by saying that “no deal was made” on DACA and that the wall was “already under construction.” Trump went on, however, to defend young immigrants protected under DACA, [need to get at that he’s flip-flopped so much on DACA.]
“Does anybody really want to throw out good, educated and accomplished young people who have jobs, some serving in the military? Really!” Trumptweeted. “They have been in our country for many years through no fault of their own — brought in by parents at young. Plus BIG border security”
Trump reiterated, yet again, his belief that “both sides” shared responsibility for the violence that took place in Charlottesville. The comments came the day after Trump met with Sen. Scott for a meeting on race relations.
“Especially in light of the advent of antifa, if you look at what’s going on there, you know, you have some pretty bad dudes on the other side also,” Trump said, adding, “in fact, a lot of people have actually written, ‘Gee, Trump might have a point.’”
Trump and first lady Melania visited Florida in the wake of Hurricane Irmato meet with state and local leaders, as well as survey damage that Trump called “horrific.”

In case you missed it, Trump’s vanquished presidential opponent Hillary Clinton wrote a book about the election. “Crooked Hillary Clinton blames everybody (and every thing) but herself for her election loss,” the president tweeted in response. “She lost the debates and lost her direction!”

Day 239 — September 15

Loser terrorists

Trump used news of a terrorist attack in London — a crude device exploded on a train, injuring 23 people — to call for tougher action against “loser terrorists.” He also appeared to break news in a tweet, saying these “sick and demented people” were “in the sights of Scotland Yard.”

Trump went after ESPN, saying the network is “paying a really big price for its politics.” Trump was referring to ESPN anchor Jemele Hill recently calling Trump a white supremacist. Earlier in the week, responding to a reporter at the daily press briefing, Sarah Huckabee Sanders called for Hill’s firing.

Join us to Stop Trump's
Dirty Energy Plan! »

Dear Friend,

President Trump is fast tracking his dirty energy agenda and is putting our country at grave risk. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have highlighted how harmful climate change is, with the potential to worsen for future generations if we do not swiftly transition from nuclear and coal to a clean energy path. The damage will be to human life and safety, to our local and national economies, to businesses large and small, and to the environment necessary to sustain clean food, air, and water.
It's time to tell President Trump to stop the $100 billion nuclear bailout!
Advancing Trump's dirty energy agenda is damaging to our nation. Nuclear and coal investments exhaust financial resources that need to be invested into clean energy, which generates more long term jobs with opportunities for career growth.
Continued investments in dirty energy infrastructure is economically, environmentally, and morally negligent.
Sign our petition to Stop President Trump's #DirtyEnergy agenda now!

It's time to fast track the advancement of clean energy sources and strive to position the United States as a clean energy leader. A nuclear and coal bailout will cost hundreds of billions of dollars—dollars that could be used to create a 100% clean energy transition.

The time is now to stop Trump’s dirty energy agenda. Please join us—sign the petition opposing the nuclear and coal bailout.
Also, join us for a rally and day of action to Stop Trump's Dirty Energy Plan:
September 20, 2017 at 8:30 am
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
888 First St, NE, Washington, DC, 20426
This is another opportunity to advocate for reform and change; we'd love to see you there.

Thanks for all you do!

A letter from the Mission

Where are you at right now? And who are you surrounded by?
It’s easy to not appropriately value where we’re at and who we’re surrounded by. It’s easy to look outward into the world of social and digital media and lose hope. When we do, we can squander our power and potential. It’s much harder to look inward, or at our immediate surroundings, friends, and family and treat them well.
Here is the best quote and reminder I’ve found to empower myself and appropriately value my real friends and family:

The nexus of space and time where you are now is the most immediate sector of your universe, and if you're worrying about [Insert celebrity here] or [Insert politician here] or somebody else, then you are disempowered, you're giving it all away to icons, icons which are maintained by an electronic media so that you want to dress like X or have lips like Y. This is sh*t-brained, this kind of thinking. That is all cultural diversion, and what is real is you and your friends and your associations, your highs… your hopes, your plans, your fears. And we are told 'no', we're unimportant, we're peripheral. 'Get a degree, get a job, get a this, get a that.' And then you're a player, you don't want to even play in that game. You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that's being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world.
Terence McKenna

Digital media and new technologies can sap our willpower and cause us to give everything away to icons the media and social networks anoint as the “real” arbiters of life and information.
Just because others follow icons, doesn’t mean you need to.
Your ideas, aspirations, and ambitions don’t have to be approved of by the crowd. You can become a majority of one.

Any man more right than his neighbors constitutes a majority of one already.
–Henry David Thoreau

Take yourself, your family, and your friends seriously. They (and you) are the ones in your local nexus of space and time that matter the most. Listen to them, value them, and stop looking outside for who to follow. Find the quirky, the undervalued, and follow your intuition.
Your hopes, fears, dreams, friends, and allies are the most important things you have. Make sure to treat them well, and take them seriously.
Have a great Friday and weekend!
-Chad

NYT: Spike food supply with sterilization chemicals to reduce population
Mike Adams
During the Nixon administration, the New York Times published a science article that pushed for sterilization chemicals to be added to the food supply. The goal? Global depopulation.
Today, that goal is well under way, but it's all gone "covert." Now, there are at least five vectors through which global depopulation is being pursued.
Today's feature article cites to the New York Times and documents the depopulation / human elimination agenda being pursued right now (without your knowledge or consent).

Dear Supporter,

The leadership of Achiezer, the Agudath Israel of America, Amudim, Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services, the Rabbinical Council of America and the Orthodox Union express our heartfelt concern and prayers for those impacted by Hurricane Irma. We are grateful to Hashem that the forecasted extensive damage never fully materialized.

Nevertheless the impact of trauma is affecting many in the community. Mental health professional teams on the ground like OHEL’s Mobile Trauma Team and others, are assisting many, and are available to help in the recovery of individuals, families and the community as a whole. Resources on Coping With Crisis are available by clicking here.

Since before Irma struck the southeastern United States, we have been in continuous communication with our networks of Florida synagogue and community leadership and we know that many communities and synagogues remain without power. We’ve also received reports from community leaders of an impending food shortage. We will continue to monitor this situation and will alert you should additional critical assistance be required.

In an effort to provide much needed kosher food and provisions for the Jewish communities in the Tri-Counties of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, as well as communities elsewhere in Florida, including Gainesville and the Florida Keys, we are launching a limited fundraising campaign together with our local partners in Florida. We are also working with local organizations and synagogues to provide food, hospitality and various support services needed by those whose homes are still without power. You can donate towards the Hurricane Irma Florida Relief effort here.

Please continue your tefillot on behalf of the many people seriously affected by Hurricane Irma, many of whom may not be able to return home for days. We also encourage our network of communities to check in with their family and friends in the impacted areas to share and express prayers, concern and good wishes.

Please consider supporting the important relief efforts to provide the necessary sustenance to the Jewish community by donating today. In addition, please keep the communities of Houston in the forefront of your thoughts as they continue their rebuilding efforts following the devastation wrought by Hurricane Harvey floodwaters.

Finally, we are deeply concerned about the broader community and ask that you consider contributing to the Red Cross.

We have seen tremendous support for those in need,  we hope that your extraordinary generosity will continue as we approach the Yamim Noraim (High Holidays) – you can help the people of Houston here.

Portrait of Shannan Lenke StollThis has been a summer of severe weather. Across the country, communities are dealing with damage from out-of-control wildfires and devastating hurricanes. P.S. You won’t see us in your inbox for a couple of weeks as we launch an upgrade to this newsletter and a new YES! store. But you can look forward to a better mobile experience and a fresh new look.
