Call your Congressional representatives and tell them: Vote NO on HR 3053! Dear Friend, NIRS needs your help! U.S. Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL) is attempting to rush H.R. 3053, the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017, to the House floor for a vote. NOW is the time to call your Congressional representatives (202-224-3121), and tell them to VOTE NO on HR 3053, the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017. NIRS has mentioned before what an incredibly BAD idea H.R. 3053 is. Here are the facts: H.R. 3053 tries to revive the failed, canceled Yucca Mountain (NV) site as a nuclear dump, despite volcanoes, earthquakes, its inability to isolate the waste and violations of environmental justice, Western Shoshone sovereignty and state authority.  H.R. 3053 directs the Department of Energy to contract for a temporary storage site (called Centralized “Interim” Storage-CIS or Monitored Retrievable Storage-MRS), which is illegal under current law. The bill removes the requirement that a permanent nuclear disposal site is operating, before an additional, interim storage site can open. That means these supposedly temporary sites could become permanent, above-ground, nuclear waste “parking lot dumps”.   H.R. 3053 would trigger thousands of intensely radioactive shipments on our roads, rails, and waterways over decades…an unprecedented, massive, multi-decade, high-level nuclear waste shipping campaign from over 100 nuclear reactors through 44 states to a private corporate parking lot dump, and possibly, DOE centralized “interim” parking lot dumps. All of the waste would have to move again when a permanent site is opened, increasing transport risks.  H.R. 3053 weakens environmental and safety requirements for the deadliest waste.   H.R. 3053 fails to make waste storage less dangerous at the sites where it is now located. Even if a permanent site opened immediately it will take years to move it there, and at operating reactor sites new waste will be added. In the meantime, communities need Hardened On-Site Storagein containers that can be inspected for cracks, repaired or repackaged. Call your Congressional representatives today and let them know you oppose H.R. 3053 and the threat is poses to all of us. מגבית לשנה החדשה אנא היו שותפים בפעילותינו החשובה.   תירמו כעת! כמה מילים... מה ענה סיימון כששאלו אותו: איך המשכת להאמין אחרי כל מה שעברת? קוראים וקוראות יקרים, (הפעם זה יהיה קצת ארוך, אז אם פתחתם את המייל בגלל הכותרת... המשיכו לגלול למטה לכתבות ולסרטונים החדשים של השבוע) ביום כיפור השנה, אחשוב על סיימון. או בשמו המלא: יששכר בן יונה הלוי. סיימון היה ניצול שואה. תמיד הגיע לבית הכנסת בזמן, תפס את המקום הקבוע שלו והניח תפילין. לא דיבר יותר מדאי ולא התבלט; בסוף התפילה הוא היה מאחל לי "א גוטן טאג" (יום טוב) ויצא לדרכו. רציתי לשמוע את סיפורו. רציתי לשמוע את מקור עוצמתו. כיצד המשיך אחרי שאיבד כמעט את כל משפחתו בידי הנאצים הארורים? מה הביא אותו ארצה להילחם במלחמת השחרור ולאחר-מכן להקים משפחה לתפארת? ערב אחד הוא הוזמן על ידי חברי בית הכנסת לספר את סיפורו. אל המקום התכנסו גברים ונשים בכל הגילאים, אני בטוח שכמוני הם היו סקרנים לשמוע את סיפורו ואת תלאות חייו. לומר את האמת? הסיפור היה מרתק, אבל הצורה בה סיימון סיפר אותה הייתה קצת... שגרתית. בלי הרבה תיאורים דרמטיים, ללא להגביה את הקול או להתרגש, הוא פשוט סיפר מה עבר עליו. "הגרמנים שלחו אותנו... הרגו את אלה ואת אלה" הוא תיאר כאילו הוא מספר על קניה במכולת. כזה היה סיימון, אדם מאוד מופנם. ואז איתן, אחד המשתתפים הצעירים, הרים את היד. "אני רוצה לדעת איך אתה עדיין מאמין באלוקים אחרי כל מה שעברת" הוא שאל. "ראית את המשפחה שלך נרצחת על ידי הנאצים, חווית את הדברים הגרועים ביותר בעולם. איך אתה עדיין מאמין? איך אתה עדיין מגיע לבית הכנסת ומתפלל"? כולם עקבו במתח אחר תשובתו של סיימון. גם אני חיכיתי לשמוע איזה נאום נלהב על אמונה בבורא העולם או אולי על לבטים ועל התמודדויות... אבל סיימון השיב בפשטות גמורה.
