“Rocket Man”

CREDIT: AP PHOTO/EVAN VUCCI
President Trump’s first speech before world leaders at the UN General Assembly went about as well as you’d expect. Highlights include proclaiming that America does not “seek to impose” its way of life on anyone, followed immediately by threatening three different countries, and calling North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un “Rocket Man.” Yes, really.

Last night, CNN reported that the FBI had obtained a warrant to wiretap Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort for months, both before and after the 2016 election. Trump allies like Julian Assange were quick to suggest that the news somehow vindicated Trump’s assertion from March that President Obama was having him wiretapped. Not even close.

Reading List

Former Obama speechwriter David Litt’s new memoir reflects on what he learned from being “just” outside of the president’s inner circle.
Chris Long of the Philadelphia Eagles is donating six weeks of his salary to fund scholarships for middle school students in his hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia.
It’s been a year since President Obama called for “collective action” in dealing with the global refugee crisis. Here’s where we are now.

Soundbite

— Bill O’Reilly — who was fired from Fox News after numerous allegations of sexual harassment — still not getting it.

News that matters

➜ After spending 8 months in a fake Mars habitat (aka, Hawaii), the crew emerged victorious. Barbaric yawps aside, this fifth mock mission went full tilt. They communicated with Earth using 20 to 40 minute delays, ate only preserved foods and a grown veggie or two, and most difficult, going outside required the use of a full space suit.

➜ The Emmy’s happened this weekend. Maybe you caught them, maybe you didn’t. We’re all suckers for celebrities and “Oh my gosh, what was she wearing”. Yah, we’re not immune either. But we are big fans of Vanity Fair, their reporting, and the gorgeous design of their site. So, we give you the link to celeb fashion from the Emms, courtesy of VF.

➜ Finally, if you’re still enamored by Apple’s new unlock-with-your-face iPhone X and are curious how developers are going to use it, look no further than Apple’s official 7-minute talk. Face tracking. We were half expecting Thomas Cruise to jump out of a futuristic self-driving pod-car and yell, “Minority Report!” But alas, he probably blew the event budget. Always next year, Apple.

What we're reading

Fred Wilson is a well-respected startup investor. He’s made some incredible bets in his career that have paid off handsomely, including Twitter, and was an early proponent of Bitcoin and the entire cryptocurrency space. He wrote a post yesterday, discussing a new way to look at Worry. Whether that’s in your life, investing for the future, or managing a business.

What we're listening to

It’s podcast season in Mission land and boy do we have some exciting news coming forthwith. But in the meantime, we checked out the latest A16Z’s smartest of the smart podcast on maps. We know what you’re thinking. There’s nothing exciting about maps. That is, until, it’s the thing controlling all the self-driving cars on the highway. The wheels on the bus go vroom vroom, y’all. Besides, indoor maps coming this fall from our friends at Apple. Say whaaaaaat, Siri?

What we're watching

Like ninjas? Us too. That’s why we’re fans of America Ninja Warrior, the nearly decade-long running program with “normal” people doing abnormal athletic tests of agility (heh, yah we could totally do that handstand double axel off a plush ratchet thingamajig too). The season finale was last night and is getting the highest ratings of the year. Did you know 70,000 people applied to be a part of the action, this season alone? Hope you’ve got health insurance.
Ever heard of Halo Top ice cream? Their tagline is 250-total-calorie pints packed with protein. Basically, eat an entire pint without feeling guilty. We’re big fans of the stuff in our households and have been known to house a pint (ahem, two) in one sitting. Sorry, Susan Powder. But they just released some new ad creative with a new commercial. It’s different, that’s for sure. But I'd love to know your thoughts on the matter. Reach out: sean@themission.co.

September 2017 newsletter
Malwarebytes www.malwarebytes.com
The Equifax breach has millions of concerned folks scrambling in the aftermath. The data of about 143 million Americans was exposed to cybercriminals. You might be wondering, "Am I compromised? If so, what should I do about it?"
While there have been many news stories about the breach, different outlets have provided conflicting reports about what to do about it. We've put some boots on the ground to deliver the most accurate, relevant, and helpful advice on steps to take to protect yourself in the wake of this attack. Because, but for a few minor inconveniences, you can save yourself the massive headache-inducing pain of identity theft.

When it comes to malware, there's nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. If you're using a device that connects to the Internet - and that includes the stalwart, "impenetrable" Mac - chances are you'll get infected. We've told you about the warning signs for PC infection: computer runs slow, browser redirects, blue screen of death. But what about the Mac?
Warning signs for this reputably secure operating system may be subtler than on the PC, but they're there. Read on to find out how you can spot an infection on a Mac - and what to do about it if you find one.

Latest news
To encourage website owners and service providers to move to HTTPS, Google began sending email reminders that sites will be marked as insecure if they don't comply. This is the latest step in the search giant's long-term effort to create a safer web experience for every user.

Watch out for this phish targeting LinkedIn users via private message and the InMail feature.

An independent researcher recently found multiple vulnerabilities plaguing the Medfusion 4000 Wireless Syringe Infusion Pump. ICS-CERT offers several defensive measures.

A Noma-style love story

How Nadine Levy Redzepi and Rene Redzepi ended up together is a modern culinary fairytale. Unaware of who she was talking to, the new waitress asked her boss/the Noma co-founder how long he'd been working at the restaurant. "I'm the owner," he replied. He fell hard for her when she cooked him pasta studded with chicken livers, tomatoes and chili (his childhood favorite)—twelve years later they're married with three kids. This October, Nadine will release her first cookbook Downtime: Deliciousness At Home, packed full of casual recipes perfect for everyday, like the roast chicken she makes for Rene when he comes home from a trip. Culinary chops came way before meeting Rene though: Nadine's been cooking since she was a kid, whipping up salad dressing at seven and cooking multi-course meals by ten. MEET NADINE [The Guardian]

A beer to believe in

Pasta lovers rallied around Amatricia, Italy, the namesake of pasta all'amatriciana, after it was struck by a catastrophic earthquake last year—now it's time for beer lovers to do the same. Monks in nearby Norcia started brewing beer three years ago to draw pilgrims to their out-of-the-way monastery. The beer became so successful, they were shipping it to the States...until the earthquake decimated their 13th century monastery and most of their equipment. Now, they're selling the few bottles that remain for funds to rebuild it. Best sipped while listening to the monks' number one classical Billboard-chart topping record of Marian chants, Benedicta. POUR ME A COLD ONE [NPR]

Sri Lankan flatbread at home

This weekend you're going hunting for frozen coconut so you can experience the sweet, fluffy deliciousness of freshly made pol roti. Hailing from Sri Lanka, this coconut-infused flatbread is traditionally eaten for breakfast alongside lentil curry and pol sambol (grated coconut mixed with chili powder and lime juice). But frankly, we think this bread is a handy sauce sopper-upper for any meal and, since it just takes fifteen minutes to whip up, you can have it for a snack as well. GET THE RECIPE [The Foodie Miles]
