Tell the Senate to stand up against child trafficking.

Your signature could protect a child's freedom

Dear STJEPAN,

Over 100,000 American children are forced into prostitution every year—and as a reader of The Nation, I know you agree we cannot ignore the insidious practice of selling kids for sex.

Right now, there are 12 anti-trafficking bills up for a vote in the Senate. If passed, these pieces of legislation will deliver a major blow to the vile sex trafficking industry pervading our country.

Will you urge the Senate to take action by signing our petition today?

Our Congress has repeatedly failed to address this nation's trafficking crisis, allowing all 12 bills to die last year in the Senate.

As President of Covenant House, I have met too many homeless kids that have been traumatized by abusive, exploitative pimps and johns on the streets. We can help these innocent children heal and protect the next kid from falling prey to traffickers… but we need your help to do it.

Your signature will protect abandoned and neglected children across the nation. Sign our petition now.

Thank you,
Kevin Ryan
President

P.S. Passing not just 1 but 12 bills will have a monumental impact on our fight against child trafficking. We need the support of compassionate, progressive people like you to urge action. Please sign our petition today.

Are Academic Boycotts Popular in the United States?

Myths & Facts: 2012
In December 2013, the American Studies Association (ASA) passed a resolution calling for an academic boycott of Israel and specifically demanding that American universities end all collaboration with Israeli institutions. The ASA itself, and its members, were not required to comply with the resolution; nevertheless, the  Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement crowed about the "victory" and expect it to set a precedent for other academic institutions to follow suit. So far, only the tiny Native American Studies Association has done so, but the ASA has paid a high price in the court of public opinion and academia for its decision.

Of the ASA's total membership of 5,000, 826 members (17 percent) voted for the resolution. Subsequently, the ASA has faced a torrent of criticism from the academic community and beyond. Among the critics are prominent academic associations, many university presidents, and a group of students who won awards from the ASA.

Mitchell Bard in the Jerusalem Post

Why BDS Can't Win

A 2010 study by the Reut Institute reported that a well-organized, well-funded international network with hubs in key cities, such as London and San Francisco, was managing an international delegitimization campaign against Israel. The report led to the creation of a network of pro-Israel organizations to develop a response. Four years later, it is clear that it is not the Israel deniers but Israel's supporters that are networked, well-financed and organized. Israel denial remains a serious concern, especially in Europe, but the fears engendered by Reut's report were exaggerated because the detractors' network has since been revealed as weak to non-existent, Israel's supporters have mobilized effectively to thwart their initiatives, and the merits of their arguments cannot withstand scrutiny.
Fact of the Week

3,000 Year Old Seal From Era of King David Found:

An ancient seal from the era of King David was unearthed by a ten-year-old Russian boy named Matvei Tcepliaev while participating in the Temple Mount Sifting Project during late September 2015. Dr. Gabriel Barkay, director of the field project, stated that the find was "unprecedented," and the first of it's kind in Jerusalem.

Top Secret Service official urged release of unflattering information about congressman
The Secret Service’s assistant director urged that unflattering information the agency had in its files about a congressman critical of the service should be made public, according to a government watchdog report released Wednesday. “Some information that he might find embarrassing needs to get out,” Assistant Director Edward Lowery wrote in an e-mail to a fellow director on March 31, commenting on an internal file that was being widely circulated inside the service. “Just to be fair.”

Let’s Speed Things Up

This morning, Lean In and McKinsey & Co. released a new study on the state of women in corporate America, where they found it will take roughly 25 years to reach gender equality at the senior-VP level and more than 100 years at the C-suite level. “Our analysis reveals that at the current pace of progress, we are more than one hundred years away from gender equality in the C-suite. If NASA launched a person into space today, she could soar past Mars, travel all the way to Pluto, and return to Earth ten times before women occupy half of C-suite offices. Yes, we’re that far away,” Sheryl Sandberg wrote on her Facebook page. And you thought the wait for a new season of Game of Thrones was too long. Read more about their findings here. [Related: Are You Obsessed With How You Measure Up?]

The Power of #62Million

It was a room full of awesome ladies yesterday at Glamour‘s Power of an Educated Girl event, which featured Charlize Theron, Sophia Bush, and someone named Michelle Obama. They were there to discuss the devastating fact that 62 million girls in the world are not being educated—and this hurts everyone. (We agree.) Educating women can help solve major problems like poverty and AIDS, for example. In order to help these young women, we have to lay some ground work. So, FLOTUS told the 1,000 school-aged girls in the audience, “I want to encourage all of us as young women—and older women—we have to raise our own bars. You won’t be successful hanging out with people who drag you down…. There is no boy at this age who is cute enough or interesting enough to stop you from getting your education.” The First Lady encouraged everyone to take to social media, snap a selfie, and write in the caption: “What I learned in school is _______” accompanied by the hashtag #62million. Mix It Up

In case you haven’t heard, people are very into ClassPass. If you’re like ClassWhat? (since it’s not in every city yet), ClassPass lets people try new workout classes each month at a reduced rate. It’s like a buffet, but instead of food you get really sweaty and do weird things with jump ropes. They might be onto something, because according to science (it’s the best!), going to that unfamiliar class makes us enjoy the workout more, and makes us more likely to exercise or take more classes in the future. The study, reported by Shape, found that non-active people enjoyed and did better doing a rather unique workout—like hula-hooping. Not to say you should ditch a workout you already know and love (umm, quitting SoulCycle? That’s just crazy talk), but if you’re feeling like you’re in a workout rut, consider trying something new. [Related: How to Avoid the Scary Health Risks of Sitting in Your Office Chair All Day]
