Anyone thirsty this Thursday? It's Tartan Week, and we're letting out our inner Scot this month.Oh, the other kind of thirsty? In this city? When every other person you pass on the street is attractive AF? Yeah, same.
Find your summer bae quick, so you have someone to take to all the cool sh*t popping up at Governors Island. Make sure you save your dough this month though. ...You know your 'ship is built to last when you pass one not-so-simple test: moving a couch into an apartment. Not ready for that kind of pressure, but still need somewhere to sit? Meet Burrow.
Few know that hip hop legend, Tupac, had dreams of opening a restaurant– his vision is coming to life in NYC this weekend only.
Londoners have got it in their heads that they can compare themselves to us– oh wait, when it comes to renting. Okay, that's probz fair.
Also, heads up, in case you don't live in Brooklyn, Record Store Day 2017 is coming up soon.
#StruggleIsReal
Everyone hates moving: it’s exhausting, stressful and overall consuming.

But New Yorkers have a special hatred for moving, and it correlates with how high up your apartment is within the building.

The narrow stairways are no friend to that furniture you found on the sidewalk.

But what if the couch you need to bring up to the fifth floor breaks up and can be put back together—in 10 minutes—like pieces to a puzzle?

Our buds at Edge in Motion Productions have helped illustrate this all-too-real struggle we never knew would actually be solved by a kickass couch called Burrow. READ MORE…

Powamekka Cafe

This weekend only, you can visit the tastiest homage to Tupac yet– a pop-up serving all the rapper’s favorite foods, based on sketches and ideas he wrote down for a restaurant before his death.

Munch on meatloaf, gumbo and fried chicken wings while viewing memorabilia from Tupac’s life, including childhood photos, poetry and more!

Heads up though, you should make that reservation sooner rather than later. READ MORE…

Missed Connections
Remember that James Blunt song? YOU KNOW THE ONE.

"You’re Beautiful,” aka the only James Blunt song anyone remembers slash can never un-remember because it played on the radio so many freakin’ times?

About seeing a beautiful woman on a crowded subway, and imagining a life together with the beautiful stranger, only to let to moment slip by (because you’re way too high to do anything about it)?

Well New Yorkers are very used to that phenomenon– there are a lot of us on this lil' island, and sometimes you’re just too busy/too shy/too high to make a move!

These open letters go out to the one(s) that got away.

Like that handsome guy you saw on the subway but had absolutely no chance of walking over and talking to because it was the 1 train during rush hour and you were packed in like a sardine.

We’ll always love you, subway guy. READ MORE…

Refined Nomad
Oh, you’re tired AF of going out to buy couches that either won’t fit through the door or take hours and HOURS to assemble while translating a foreign language on the fly?

Say hi to Burrow, the modular couch that you buy online and get shipped right to your door in small boxes.

It takes 10 minutes to assemble, has chemical-free fabrics (nom nom nom), and even has a power outlet/USB adapter you can hook right under the center, plug into the wall, and charge all of your devices without shifting your couch around the room or dangling the wires.

They done changed the couch game for good and forever! READ MORE…

Och Aye!
It’s Tartan Week in NYC!

If you’re looking for a place to flaunt your kilts, we’ve rounded up the most authentic Scottish pubs in NYC to check out with your fellow lads and lassies this month.

We’re talking Scotch and Haggis out the wazoo.

Just try not to sit by the door, lest a rogue draft ‘Marilyn Monroe’s’ your kilt.

Although, TBH, a true Scot would be proud to show off the goods. READ MORE…

There Can Only Be One
New Yorkers and Londoners will be quick to tell you that they live in the most expensive (albeit best) city in the world.

When it comes to cost of living, the ‘who’s got it worse’ debate is a tale as old as time.

So the roomie finding app and website SpareRoom took it upon themselves to take a survey of over 2,000 roommates in New York and London, to find out just how much renters are paying for cost of living, and other factors like commute time, evening activities, salary, utility costs, and more.

Read more to find out who took away the trophy of getting to have the biggest chip on their shoulder. READ MORE…

Free bike rentals, a rock climbing wall, a zipline….yes, you can now zipline on Governor’s Island.

So yeah, we’ll definitely see you there. READ MORE…

It's Getting Ugly

It’s been a tough month for the residents of Trumpland.
The “Obamacare” repeal? Couldn’t get a vote. The Muslim ban? Laughed out of court. The budget? “Dead on arrival,” according to Senator Lindsey Graham.
The corruption of this administration is both brazen and incompetent. Case in point: Trump’s son-in-law is about to sell his debt-laden Manhattan office tower to a bank owned by the Chinese government for several billion dollars above market value.
The evidence of Trump’s campaign coordination with Russian intelligence is strong enough that Mike Flynn won’t testify without immunity.
Yet the Republican congressional delegation continues to insist that the emperor is fully clothed and has all his real hair. They are going to go down with this ship.
Once again, the Republican party is destroying itself. The question is: Are progressives ready with a positive vision of a just society and the policies to back it up?

Our economy is about more than numbers. It’s about people. We’re fighting for new rules for our economy to ensure we’re cared for when we provide care for each other.
We need a financial system that works for people and communities, not just lenders. That’s why we’re fighting for strong rules to rein in the payday lending industry.

RESPECTED FRIENDS,
Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne wrote today, “Why are Democrats filibustering Judge Neil Gorsuch? Because they’ve had enough with the politics of power-grabbing and bullying.”
Because of the hard work and committed support of PFAW supporters like you, Democrats stood up to Trump Republicans’ bullying and extremism and voted to BLOCK the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. But Republicans then rammed through an unprecedented rule change on a straight party-line vote that eliminated the 60-vote bar for Supreme Court confirmations.
This unconscionable affront to our democracy and our constitution was a coordinated move by the entire Republican Party -- executed by US senators but supported by Republicans in the White House, the House of Representatives, and the states.
It MUST be remembered in every upcoming election and, for the sake of American democracy, Republicans MUST be made to pay.
This sort of power grab has become standard operating procedure for Republicans at the federal AND state levels. It’s even more of a threat with Trump heading their party in the White House.
Make no mistake: this is how democracies die.
That is not hyperbole. Power grabs like this one have been at the beginning of authoritarian regimes’ rise to power throughout history.
The rule the Republicans changed existed to ensure some modicum of bipartisan cooperation on lifetime appointments to our nation’s highest court -- our most powerful arbiter of the law and justice. It existed precisely to prevent a majority party from steamrolling the minority in order to pack the Court with extreme partisan or ideological judges (Neil Gorsuch is both).
Republicans’ favorite talking point throughout this fight was that Democrats were simply blocking Gorsuch as payback for the treatment of Merrick Garland, President Obama’s nominee to the same seat, and that they would oppose ANY Trump nominee.
To be perfectly blunt, that’s garbage.
Trump skipped the first part of the traditional nominating process -- consultation with senators of both parties -- and chose an unacceptable nominee from a list of unacceptable possibilities that was directly handed to him by the Radical Right. As evidence of Gorsuch’s unfitness for the High Court became more abundant and more damning, it became impossible for honest senators who care about our constitutional values to give him any sort of “free pass” for his unabashed cruelty and his penchant for twisting the law to benefit corporate special interests and deny everyday Americans basic justice.
Today, Republican senators led by Mitch McConnell shamed themselves. They shamed our country. And, with your ongoing commitment to our patriotic resistance, they will pay dearly for it.
Thank you so much for everything you’ve done in this fight and for everything we know you will continue to do save our country from Trump and a Republican Party that’s gone so clearly off the deep end.
