Why do you think Nintendo discontinued the NES Classic console?
Dear CNET members,

I have a couple of quick announcements before we dig into this week's topic. First up, my question to you, do you have an awesome home theater or entertainment setup at home? If you do, would you like to show it off to thousands of CNET readers? Here's your chance to give your home entertainment center the spotlight it deserves on CNET. Here's how to submit your photos. I'm sure all our readers (me included) would love to see your proud setup!

Second up, for all you out there who are "Fast and the Furious" fans, my buddy Tania is hosting CNET's "Fate of the Furious" schwag giveaway and there will be six lucky winners. Check out how to enter and I wish you the best of luck in winning.

Now we land on today's hot topic -- Nintendo discontinuing its super popular retro gaming console, the NES Classic Edition, based on the retro edition of the NES (Nintendo Entertainment system) released back in the early '80s. (Not sure what I'm talking about? Check out the video here or the review on it.)

The Nintendo NES Classic Edition retro console has been a hot item ever since its debut, when it was immediately sold out everywhere -- except of course from price gougers on eBay or Amazon Marketplace. It was quite a popular item on people's CNET holiday wish lists too. And if you were lucky, you got your hands on one, but for others it has been a waiting game.
As of February Nintendo has sold more than 1.5 million of these consoles, and demand continues to be strong. But now Nintendo has announced that it's discontinuing the console anyway! When I heard this news, I thought it was some late April Fool's prank, but Nintendo has confirmed it, without saying much about why. My guess as well as that of a lot of folks around the web is, Nintendo hates money!

Seriously, I don't understand the discontinuation if demand is high. Produce more of them, sell more and make more money, right? I don't have a business degree or anything remotely close to one, but isn't that common sense? Maybe there's some different business angle -- or maybe Nintendo is behind the sellers on Amazon or eBay who are jacking up the price and laughing all the way to the bank! Just kidding. But my question to you all, whether you are into Nintendo or not, is why do you think Nintendo would abruptly discontinue such a popular product? Give this article a read and if you have any theories, please enlighten all of us.

The NES classic was a bit of marketing genius. Think about it, This was released just before the Switch, a system that had to bring Nintendo back. Nintendo needed to remind gamers that they were Nintendo. The classic was just a physical ad to bring about awareness. Did it work? Considering the Switch is currently sold out, I would say yes.

-- Submitted by: CountRenula

I was thinking about these games would be part of Switch's Virtual Console games. hopefully there is a way from Wii/WiiU VC to Switch without or minimal payments, rather buying again the same games. or maybe there would be an SNE mini/Super Famicom mini soon. :)

Um, because Nintendo can free up resources and development attention for a platform like the Switch that has far more profit and growth potential? The NES Classic is a simple statement about recycled past triumphs, a walled dead end that harbors no profit beyond that of the sales of the unit itself. The only persons who were estatic with it are the secondary market profiteers who manage to buy up the lion's share at the $60 price point and leave next to nothing for the rest. Besides, wasn't there talk about a Super NES Classic coming down the pike?
