Love it or hate it, we can all relate to the very real struggles of living in NYC– especially finding the perfect bae, and LOCKING THAT SH*T DOWN.
'Tis the season of waiting in lines to get onto rooftops, and we've got one more to add to your list.
Has anyone else been spending waaayy too much money on cocktails and tapas this month? WE CAN'T HELP IT. Luckily, this budgeting app is helping us stay on track.
We're also hooking one of you lucky mofos up with $1,000 of fresh foodz and cold booze. Don't miss out.
There's a groovy disco party going down this month, not at a club though, but at the Astor Place Cube. Someone make sure Fearless Girl gets her invite.
Uh, ICYMI, some dudes have created clear coffee, and we're pretty sure this is how people felt when Jesus turned water into wine.
Already thinking about jumping ship for the summer? This simple text alert will hook you up with the best travel deals (don't worry, you can skip United).

Flower Power

New York’s Hottest Club is The Secret Garden Bar.
To get in, you have jump rope outside of the Knickerbocker Hotel, until a robin flies over and shows your where a hidden key is buried.
Then, you have to recruit a young Irishman to help you find a lost door covered in ivy, and only THEN, may you enter the Secret Garden rooftop bar.
JK, that’s just the plot of the classic childhood novel.
BUT, no joke, there is a secret garden themed rooftop bar in the Knickerbocker Hotel now through Memorial Day.
If you follow them on Insta, you may not get a key, but you can get a secret word that will get you half-priced small plates.

All You Need is Love

Having a stable job and not being a psychopath are pretty important requirements to have for someone before you start to date them, but if they don’t live by a quality bagel shop, are they even worth it??
Ask that to any random midwesterner and they’ll look at you like you have two heads.
But to us New Yorkers, finding a bae with a good bagel spot hookup and a functioning dishwasher in their apartment is hitting the jackpot in this city.
Make sure you lock that shit down.

Spoiler Alert

In its 6 season run, Girls has been not-so-equal parts infuriating, easily dismissed, and we'll admit, sometimes genius.
Regardless of your opinions on the show, it was impossible to navigate the 20-teens without hearing about this show. It's kind of insane that it's finally over.
We're free.
Like most things about Lena Dunham's brainchild, last night's finale, “Latching,” seems to have split viewers.
Some were ecstatic with the final episode, while others were left underwhelmed.
We’ll leave you to come to your own conclusion.

And let’s not forget the after party drink specials at local bars.
This is gonna be one groovy night. We’re psyched to say the least.

Money on My Mind

I don’t know about you, but when I went home for Easter this weekend, my mom sat me down for the “You need to get your sh*t together talk.”
And she’s right, like most New Yorkers, I’m broke AF and terrible at keeping track of my finances.
Luckily for me, and all of us, there’s this app called Clarity. Before you start getting stressed out, this app is so easy to use, Sean Spicer could figure it out.
It organizes all of your finances—your bills, your credit cards, loans—and then it analyzes all of it and makes suggestions to save you money.

Wait no, there’s nothing worse than realizing you have a Tinder date planned after work and you’ve already downed four cups of black coffee since 9 am. We’ve all been there. These two Slovakian brothers though, seem to have our solution: clear coffee.  Yeah we didn’t know that was possible either, but hey, we’re not complaining.

Here’s a simple insight that can radically increase your creativity – while giving you more bandwidth to get things done. The next time you’re working on an important task, do not put your head down, focus, and try to complete it in one sitting. Stop what you’re doing around halfway through, and deliberately leave it incomplete for a day or two. Why? Because even though you’ll spend the rest of the day doing something else – another valuable task that moves the needle – chances are, you’ll continue to think about it, making you more likely to find breakthrough ideas you weren’t expecting. This one simple change can turn you into an idea machine. We live in a world where our success is driven by the quality of our ideas. That’s why this tiny tweak can make a huge difference over the long run. It’s a prime example of working smarter, not harder. If you’d like more paradigm shifts just like this one – strategies that can help you overcome productivity roadblocks and make a bigger impact every day – then I have something you’ll love. A few days back, I told you about the Peak Work Performance Summit, which my friend Dr. Ron Friedman is organizing. Well, I just learned that he’s offering a free copy of his new guide. It’s called The Peak Performance Playbook. This productivity tip I just shared is from Ron’s guide. And there are many others that are just as powerful. They’ll help you overcome productivity roadblocks, reduce stress levels, and feel more energized when you get home. This guide is a compilation of the best ideas of 50 leading experts in productivity, peak performance, and success. People like David Allen, Daniel Pink, Adam Grant, Susan Cain, Shawn Achor, Marshall Goldsmith, Gretchen Rubin, and other respected thought leaders. Why is Ron giving this away for free? Simple: He wants to give folks a flavor of some of the powerful ideas that are going to be shared during the Summit. After the Summit he’s going to pull it down, so I recommend you download this eBook right away. Because it’s a gem. (You might want to print it out and keep a copy sitting on your desk.)  Click here to get your free copy of The Peak Performance Playbook now... As always, thanks for supporting our site :-)

The Mission

A story about the boy who escaped the violence of the mob

The four-year-old boy knew his father wanted to kill him.

His father was in the Navy during WWII. When the war was over, his father came home seething with resentment, aggression, and trauma.
The boy had no memory of what his father was like before the war.
But this wasn’t an ordinary boy. An awareness was already swirling through his body and mind. He was already skilled at reading people, and intuiting their motivations.
He couldn’t explain it, but he was fully aware of the dynamic between him, his mother, and his father.
He knew that his mother preferred him to the strange man his father had become during the war. His father knew how his wife felt and wanted the little boy gone.
One morning shortly after his father returned, the boy was playing alone outside.
In the early morning sunlight, his father found him, and pointed up at a jagged cliff near their house. They were going to climb it.
The boy would go first.
That way, if he fell, his father would be there to catch him. Or so he said.
They started their climb. Soon the trail disappeared. The cliff face became steeper. Now the boy was practically rock climbing. The rock of the cliff was brittle, sometimes crumbling or giving way under hand and foot.
Photo, Twenty20
Cuts started to appear on the boy’s hands. Fear filled his mind. He looked back and his father was scared too.
He wouldn’t be able to catch the boy if he fell. Maybe that was the plan all along.
Without thinking, the boy kept climbing. By grace, will, or luck… the troubled duo eventually reached the top of the cliff. They waved to the boy’s mother down at the house below. Then they walked down another way.

Life for the boy after that was anything but normal.

He witnessed and endured his father’s “punishments” against him and his siblings.
When he was 13, the once small boy stood at 6 feet 7 inches… and weighed just 125 pounds. His father would routinely push him to the ground anytime they played sports. Because of his height, kids at school laughed at and bullied the boy to no end.
The boy was smart, but the crowd was relentless. In school, the boy was taught that the way to escape was through a societally worshipped career track — medicine. With nowhere else to go, the boy trusted his educators, and became good at getting good grades. And he earned his way into the most prestigious place for those good at getting good grades — Harvard.
Photo, Twenty20
The boy departed for Harvard, excited and relieved. He was finally safe from his terrorizers at school and at home. His siblings were also out of the house and safe his father’s abuse. He could finally relax. But soon, his Harvard honeymoon was over.
He couldn’t articulate what was so wrong with this place, but he knew it was something. It wasn’t so bad at first, and the boy, now a young man, did what he did best — read, write, and get good grades.
But he craved a challenge, so he began the pre-med track.
Photo, Twenty20
The young man no longer saw Harvard as a meritocracy of ideas and actions, or a place where virtue, philosophy, ethics, and science are respected. He now considered his Harvard experience to be a carefully devised product that would give him status, prestige, and a large salary for life. But that product came with trade offs no one dared speak about.
The professors and students inside the medical school track were a more extreme reflection of the product’s trade offs. Courses carried nicknames like “the screw your buddy course.”
Most medical students and professors hated anyone who expressed ideas different from the majority opinion. Not only did they hate these free-thinking individuals, but they ganged up on them and tried to make their lives a living hell in the hopes that their victims would leave Harvard.
The young man was caught in a mimetic frenzy of students all scrambling to climb the same cliff.
Like most of us who have encountered competition, he tried to win by competing. He “succeeded” in undergrad, and was well on his way to becoming a Harvard-trained medical doctor.
At medical school, the range of topics acceptable to talk about became even narrower.
Stifled and confused, the young man yearned for a way out.
But he was stuck inside an expertly designed trap.
How naive he was to think escape would be so simple. If anyone thought of leaving, there were powerful forces in place to stop them.
Photo, Twenty20
He discovered that anyone who wanted to leave must first talk to a Harvard-trained psychiatrist. The absurdity of it was maddening. Not only did he have to admit he was psychologically unstable for thinking about leaving, but he also had to talk to someone with an incentive to give him drugs.
The first year of med school he spoke to the psychiatrist, who talked him into staying.
Second year, same story.
But in the third and final year, things were different. The psychiatrist didn’t know it. His job, like those of most men who have given up, was to get people to agree with him or get rid of them.
But the young man was now a man.
He’d been inside the hospital with all the residents. He’d discovered that there was a disturbing tolerance for physical, emotional, and even sexual abuse amongst his colleagues. He’d even seen a psychopath resident torment a patient to suicide.
In the summer of his final year, the man decided to quit. He was going to graduate to keep the prestigious degree, then get the hell out of medicine.
To stay sane in an insane environment, the young man began writing. He even started to make money doing it. He knew that publishing under his name would get him expelled, so he wrote under a pseudonym, and partnered with a young agent willing to sell cheap thrillers.
Source, GraveSpot
Eventually, he became brave enough to write under his own name. He re-wrote two of his books again and again, until his editor was satisfied.
Suddenly, both of his books began to sell! One was even optioned to become a movie! Word soon got out amongst his classmates and professors. His life of constant bullying, paranoia, and isolation was finally over.
Now, instead of being the outcast for having ideas about how medicine should be holistic, empathetic, and treat the entire person, Michael Crichton was welcomed by the elitists who weeks earlier were scoffing at him.
“Overnight, I was identified as a successful writer, and it changed everything in my life. All the doctors and residents who had shunned me became suddenly interested in me. I had been eating lunch alone; now I was never alone — everybody wanted to sit with me. I was a celebrity.” — Michael Crichton, Travels
There is no better feeling (or ambition) than tearing back the curtain and exposing false relationships.
“The blatant insincerity of the way I was treated troubled me very much. I didn’t yet understand that people used celebrities as figures of fantasy; they didn’t want to know who you really were, any more than kids at Disneyland want Mickey Mouse to pull off his rubber head and reveal that he’s just a local teenager. The kids want to see Mickey. And the doctors in the cafeteria wanted to see Young Dr. Hollywood. And that was what they saw.” — Michael Crichton, Travels
Humans must work hard to become liberated (what Nietzsche called the real liberation). We’re free to quit or start projects of our own volition.
“In quitting, I was following my instincts; I was doing what I really wanted to do. But most people saw only that I was giving up a lot of prestige. In those days, the prestige of physicians was high. Polls ranked doctors just below justices of the Supreme Court. To quit medicine to become a writer struck most people like quitting the Supreme Court to become a bail bondsman. They admired my determination, but they thought I was pretty unrealistic.” –Michael Crichton, Travels
Sometimes being unrealistic can lead you to the frontier of possibility:
“Quitting medicine assured me that I would be forced into all sorts of changes I might not otherwise have made.”
Michael Crichton went on to write hundreds of stories, sometimes circling back to edit drafts up to 20 years old. One of those drafts became Jurassic Park, another Sphere.

Crichton went on to achieve unprecedented feats:

  • Selling over 200 million copies of his books
  • Writing screenplays and even directing his own movies (like Westworld, and The Great Train Robbery)
  • Writing dozens of books, short stories, non-fiction, screenplays, and dabbled with computer programs and games

And he’s still the first creative artist (for now) who has had…

  • A #1 NY Times bestselling book — Disclosure
  • A #1 TV Series he wrote and produced — ER
  • A #1 Movie — Jurassic Park

…all at the same time.

Crichton originally wanted to write only non-fiction, but battled with the reality that people hated the truth. If you did have any accurate ideas about what was coming (both good and bad) you’d better be extremely careful about who you shared them with and how you shared them.
The philosopher Leo Strauss laid out a theory that if a great mind did find and share Truth, they would be punished harshly by society for it. So instead, a first class mind would carefully place any Truth into fiction or hide it in complex writing. Crichton’s work and answers to interview questions are brimming with esoteric truths and ideas:
In a little known interview, Crichton is asked to “Have a bit of fun. Make some predictions about the next 100 years…”
He gives a coy story and answer to this challenge:
“It’s interesting that we all like to predict the future, but actually, historically, almost everybody is entirely wrong… This is 1999, if you wanted to put yourself in a position of somebody in 1899 and say, ‘What would the 20th century hold?’
You [The person being asked that question back in 1899] get about in a horse and buggy or a train. You are phenomenally prey to infectious disease. One woman in six dies in childbirth. It takes a couple weeks to cross the Atlantic, and it’s a big deal and it’s difficult. Travel across the United States has only recently become possible. Much of our country is still largely wilderness. And even though the frontier is closed, it’s still a kind of wild place. If you’re that kind of person looking at that kind of world, and somebody were to say to you,
‘They’ll be airplanes invented, and not only that, but they’ll be jet airplanes invented, and not only that they’ll be supersonic airplanes invented- you can go from London to New York in three and a half hours and people do it all the time (they go for the weekend). At any given moment, they’ll be 10,000 airplanes in the air. And what people will do is sit in them and bitch about the food. They’re are going to be these little tiny things that make calculations, that draw pictures, that do all kinds of miraculous stuff, and kids will be able to work em’.
They’ll be a single bomb that can destroy an entire city, and it’s going to involve a new technology that you don’t know anything about because you have yet to understand what holds the atom together or even what the atom looks like. We’re going to discover we’re in this universe that is fifteen billion years old… gigantic and expanding. And we’re going to understand our place in that and it’s not going to be a very terrific place. We’re going to know what genes are, we’re going to understand how genes work and we’re going to start to use them, putting them in crops all around the place, we’re going to be making pest resistant strains, we’re going to be curing disease with it, it’s going to be exploding in all different directions and some people are going to be terrified about that.’ [Long Pause]
If you said that to someone in 1899, I think they would try and have you committed. So here we are in 1999 and I think it’s really impossible to know what’s coming, except it will be something we can’t imagine.”
The mob, the crowd, and all evil forces in this world take many forms. Michael Crichton is one of the first creative artists to temporarily escape it, but he paid a high price.
“We’re witnessing the birth of an individual capable of escaping the fatal destiny of collective violence.”–René Girard
Merely witnessing these new opportunities and possibilities for those with imagination and courage doesn’t mean that escape will be easy.
In fact, I would argue that escape might be becoming harder. But if we’re willing to witness a thing happening, then the possibility to influence that event becomes a reality.
Now, there are some emerging hidden paths of escaping collective violence and the madness of crowds. Whether it’s leading a happy and healthy family on your own terms, becoming an employee at a mission-driven company creating important technologies, as a creative artist, or founding something new.
Photo, Twenty20
If we want to build a better world, the story behind the story of the men and women who escape the collective violence must be spread far and wide.
Thanks for reading. If you enjoyed this story, please click recommend and share to help others find it.
Question for you- who is your favorite example of a figure who’s escaped the violence and madness of crowds? Leave a comment and let us know!

Dear ,
Tell your Senators: Stop Trump from gutting support for renewable energy!

The fight over Trump’s massive cuts to our environmental programs is really heating up.
Trump wants to slash the EPA by more than 30%. But he also wants to make drastic cuts to the Department of Energy -- gutting even more of our critical environmental programs.
Trump’s plan still has to go through Congress. And it’s so extreme that even many GOP Senators are opposing it. But we need your help to make sure your Senators stop these cuts! Tell your Senators: Don’t let Trump make massive cuts to the Department of Energy! The Department of Energy is responsible for programs that could help shift us away from our fossil fuel addiction and toward renewable energy. But Trump’s proposed budget would gut the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. And it would cut nearly $1 billion from the Office of Science. These cuts would send a strong signal to Big Polluters that they can continue to destroy our planet with reckless abandon. With enough pressure from people like you, the Senate will reject Trump’s budget. This is a fight we can win -- but we need you to speak up! Tell your Senators: Stop Trump from gutting support for renewable energy!Trump’s budget is just one part of his larger plan to hand over our government to Big Oil. He put Rick Perry -- who denies climate change -- in charge of the Department of Energy. And Perry was proudly standing next to fossil fuel industry lobbyists as Trump announced approval of the Keystone XL pipeline. Meanwhile, Trump signed an Executive Order to eliminate the Clean Water Rule. He advanced the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines. And he's trying to gut the Clean Power Plan. The clock is ticking on preventing climate chaos. Our planet can’t afford a stripped-down Energy Department. We have to fight back. Help save the Department of Energy from Trump and his Big Oil cronies -- write to your Senators today!
Standing with you,
Ben Schreiber,
Senior political strategist,
