Maine's Best-Kept-Secret Beach

Nerves run high as we turn off the pavement and onto the dirt of Morse Mountain Road. Though no more than 30 cars at a time are allowed to park in the lot at the trailhead, nearly 20,000 people hike to Seawall Beach during the gate-keeping season from late March to late November.

We'd read reviews from other hikers who had arrived as early as 9 A.M. and been turned away. It's almost 10 now. But we're lucky. The volunteer at the tiny guard shack tells us there are still a few spots open.

Apart from being nutritionally dense with antioxidants and minerals, rooibos is also known to be made without caffeine and oxalic acid, as well as being low in tannins. This makes rooibos tea an even better choice than the ever-popular green and black tea, as those two teas contain these substances in higher amounts. You only need to think about how to take it next, whether as a smoothie, juice, or latte.

Run for Something
FRIENDS, it's been a big week here at Run for Something. On Tuesday, the official Run for Something book came out (you can buy it wherever books are sold and give it to a future candidate in your life!). And then earlier today, we learned that one of our candidates in Kansas is being attacked for being a part of the RFS family.
First things first: Justin is a high school teacher and native Kansan who wants to do some good in Shawnee. We couldn't be more proud to stand with him and his plans for his community. If you're feeling a little generous today, chip in a few bucks to support Justin's campaign right now.
But while we're bummed for Justin -- it's no fun being attacked in a local race! -- we're honestly a little psyched at the idea that soon, some Koch-brothers-esque conservative could use Run for Something as their big bad enemy. Because our not-so-secret plan is to put Democrats in as many local seats as possible. And they should be afraid of us.
If you're with us, chip in right now to support the more than 80 young people we've endorsed in local races between now and 2018, along with the 10,000 progressives who have raised their hand to say they're interested in running for something.
If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

There are seven US House seats in California that Hillary Clinton won but that are currently represented by Republicans. That means that right here in the Golden State we can help take back the House and create a new generation of progressive leaders.
But Red to Blue CA isn’t a top-down organization. We’re people powered. So we need you to tell us what you think. Your answers will guide the direction for how we move forward.
RED TO BLUE CA STRATEGY SURVEY
Your answers will impact how our members stand up to Trump and take on Republicans!
RESPOND IMMEDIATELY
We have the chance to strike back against Donald Trump and defeat his cronies in Congress. But first, we need input from good progressives like you.
Thanks for all you do,

Editor's note: We at the Sierra Club cannot send out this issue of the Insider without first acknowledging the horrific events of this past Sunday in Las Vegas. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and their loved ones.

Lost in the Flood
Puerto Rico Is Devastated: Please Help.

Hurricane Maria left most of Puerto Rico without power. Families are hauling water from government tankers to their homes in buckets and plastic trash cans. Few hospitals are operational, and doctors have dwindling medical supplies. The Sierra Club is working with community-based partners, including our Puerto Rico Chapter, in our emergency relief efforts. But the situation remains desperate, and the people of Puerto Rico need your help now. One hundred percent of funds donated will go directly to community-led recovery efforts in areas affected by the worst storm to hit Puerto Rico in 80 years.

Please make a gift to the Sierra Club's emergency Hurricane Maria relief efforts now.

Lost in the Flood
The Shameful Silence of Donald Trump

Despite shocking reports about the devastation in Puerto Rico, President Trump remained silent for days about the worst U.S. humanitarian crisis since Hurricane Katrina inundated New Orleans. Instead, the president spent an entire weekend obsessing over whether NFL football players should stand or kneel during the national anthem.

Read Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune's post about how Trump's administration is failing Puerto Rico and what we must do to help the island not just recover but thrive.

Puerto Ricans Face Uneasy Future After Maria
Puerto Ricans Face Uneasy Future After Maria

Most of Puerto Rico's 3.5 million residents could be without electricity for months. As the Puerto Ricans face an uncertain future, questions remain about a mountain of coal ash at a landfill in Guayama. Sierra magazine's Wendy Becktold spoke with Sierra Club environmental justice organizer and San Juan resident Adriana Gonzalez about what's at stake for the island.

Three powerful, cataclysmic hurricanes—Harvey, Irma, and Maria—have slammed southeastern states, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands in the past month. Sierra Club members and supporters have raised money to directly support the community-led recovery efforts, and we want to keep the momentum going. Start a Team Sierra fundraiser and rally your friends and family on October 10, our Hurricane Recovery Day of Action, to help hurricane survivors.

Jaguars and Border Walls Don't Mix
Congress Must Act Now to Aid Puerto Rico

The humanitarian disaster in Puerto Rico has affected 3.5 million Americans. It will take years to rebuild the island. It's not just the physical devastation that will need attention. Rebuilding will also require sustainably overcoming the environmental injustices that made Maria's devastation even more catastrophic to those who were the most vulnerable. The situation is dire, and it demands the full support of the U.S. government. Yet Congress is stalling on helping their fellow Americans in need.

Urge Congress to aid their fellow Americans by passing a special relief package for Puerto Rico.

Terminal Case for Northwest Coal Exports
Terminal Case for Northwest Coal Exports

Grassroots leaders scored a major victory for public health and the climate last week when the last surviving coal export terminal proposed to be built in the Pacific Northwest was denied a permit by the state, sealing the project's demise. "If you needed a reminder that people power can defeat deep-pocketed polluters, have I got a story for you," writes Mary Anne Hitt, director of the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign.

Read on.

Terminal Case for Northwest Coal Exports
Defend the Clean Power Plan

The Trump administration will soon announce its plans to dismantle the Clean Power Plan—the strongest climate action our nation has taken to limit carbon pollution from coal-fired power plants. Repealing the Clean Power Plan would be a double whammy for our communities: It would result in increased rates of respiratory illness and premature death while also worsening climate change.

This is the bidding of big corporations and polluters, putting their profits before the health and safety of our families. Speak up now to defend the Clean Power Plan.

Bristol Bay Salmon in Jeopardy

Alaska's Bristol Bay is a place of stunning natural beauty and abundant wildlife, including thriving salmon and sockeye runs. After meeting with a mining industry CEO, EPA administrator Scott Pruitt announced that he wants to allow copper and gold mining near these waters, completely reversing near-final protections proposed by the EPA during the Obama administration.

Tell the EPA that the science—its own science!—has already spoken. The potentially injurious proposed Pebble Mine must not become a reality.

Thursday Deadline: Fight for Strong Tailpipe Standards

Thanks to strong fuel-economy standards set by the Obama administration, cars and trucks are more efficient than ever. Consumers are saving money at the pump, the auto industry is innovating, and auto workers are assembling ever-more-advanced vehicles that consumers want to buy. Yet the Trump administration is opening a review of the standards—which nearly double fuel efficiency—in hopes of rigging the system in favor of corporate polluters and automakers at the expense of public health and our climate.

Tell the EPA before the comment period closes on October 5 that you support a future with more-fuel-efficient cars.

Stop the Sneak Attack on the Arctic Refuge

How do you get away with drilling in one of the last truly pristine and unspoiled wilderness areas in the United States? By burying your scheme deep in the fine print of your budget plan. And that's exactly what President Trump is trying to do with his 2018 budget. The plan currently before Congress includes a provision to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil and gas drilling.

Tell Congress to reject this destructive budget and protect the Arctic Refuge.
