Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price resigned, the White House announced in a statement, after an escalating scandal over his use of private jets on taxpayers’ dime, often for personal reasons — like taking his son to lunch in Nashville.
Trump tweeted that some “big decisions” will have to be made about rebuilding Puerto Rico because it “has been destroyed by two hurricanes.” The Department of Justice has issued three warrants to Facebook in an attempt to figure out the identities of Inauguration Day protesters, some of whom broke Starbucks windows and burned piles of “Make America Great Again” caps. While 214 individuals face felony riot charges, thousands of Facebook users’ information could wind up in the government’s hands if the DOJ succeeds.

Day 254 — September 30
A day of "nasty" tweets
|
|
Trump spent his Saturday tweeting about:
Puerto Rico wanting “everything to be done for them.”
Democrats supposedly telling San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz that she had to be “nasty” to Trump.
-
-
The “ fantastic” work by first responders and military in Puerto Rico, which was “totally destroyed.”
Nobody giving him enough credit for his Puerto Rico response.
CNN and NBC “ disparaging our great First Responders as a way to ‘get Trump.’“
How important it is that NFL players stand for the national anthem — again
After taking a beating, the San Juan mayor slapped back at the president later in the week, calling him “miscommunicator-in-chief.” She also wore a T-shirt with the word “Nasty” on it during an interview.

Day 255 — October 1
"Save your energy, Rex"
|
|
Trump offered a backhanded assurance to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson over his handling over tensions with North Korea, which Trump keeps escalating with inflammatory threats. “I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man,” Trump tweeted. “Save your energy, Rex, we'll do what has to be done!” Later, Trump accused all three of his immediate predecessors of failing to handle the North Korean threat, then proclaimed: “I won’t fail.”
Trump also applauded his own handling of the post-hurricane relief effortin Puerto Rico on Twitter despite the “Fake News or politically motivated ingrates.” “We have done a great job with the almost impossible situation in Puerto Rico,” he tweeted.

Day 256 — October 2
Not the "time and place" for gun control
|
|
Trump reacted to the massacre of 58 people in Las Vegas by lone gunman Stephen Paddock. First, he offered his “warmest condolences and sympathies” to the victims in a tweet. Later in the morning, he delivered prepared remarks and decried the event as an “act of pure evil.”
At a press conference the same day, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said there’s a “ time and place” for a gun control debate but that’s “not the place we’re in at this moment.”
In the first case of what experts have called a “blockbuster” Supreme Court term, the DOJ asked the justices to slash workers’ rights. The case could decide if employees who sign arbitration agreements have the right to file class-action lawsuits against employers.
Javanka’s email scandal got even worse when a third account came to light this week, three sources told Politico. The president’s daughter and her husband — both of whom are senior advisers to the president — have been using a private domain to communicate with White House staff at least some of the time.
Trump’s top officials apparently love private jets. Just days after Tom Price resigned over his use of private planes, the Interior Department’s internal watchdog opened an investigation into Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke’s use of taxpayer-funded charter planes. EPA administrator Scott Pruitt and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin have also come under fire for similar flights.

Day 257 — October 3
Flip-flopping on Puerto Rico's debt
|
|
Hours after joking that Puerto Rico had “thrown the budget a little out of whack” during his visit there, President Trump told Fox News he was going to wipe out the storm-ravaged island’s significant debt. But there’s almost nothing he can do about that as president.
“You know, they owe a lot of money to your friends on Wall Street, and we’re going to have to wipe that out,” Trump told correspondent Geraldo Rivera. “You can say goodbye to that.”
Trump applauded the “miracle” that Las Vegas police were able to “find the demented shooter and stop him from even more killing!” Paddock killed himself in the 32nd floor hotel room at the Mandalay Bay Casino and Hotel where he fired upon concertgoers below.
San Juan’s mayor continued to call out Trump, saying the president’s comments lack sensitivity. Press Secretary Sanders contradicted Tillerson by saying now “is not the time simply to have conversations with North Korea.” Earlier in the week, Tillerson said the U.S. was in contact with Pyongyang over its nuclear weapons program.

Day 258 — October 4
Everybody gets paper towels
|
|
Less than a day after Trump said he wanted to forgive Puerto Rico’s debt, Sanders corrected him. Trump, in fact, wants to follow the bankruptcy process, she said during a press briefing.
During what Trump later called a “great day in Puerto Rico,” the president was filmed throwing rolls of paper towels into a crowd of people as part of relief efforts. San Juan’s mayor called the sight “terrible and abominable.”
That explosive dossier just won’t go away — you know, the one packed with details on alleged ties between Russia and the Trump campaign, including the president ordering prostitutes to pee on a Moscow hotel bed. Mueller’s Russia probe now includes the documents, sources familiar with the inquiry told Reuters.
Siblings Ivanka Trump and Donald Jr. were nearly charged with felony fraud for misleading buyers interested in a failing SoHo real estate development back in 2012, according to a joint report from The New Yorker, ProPublica, and WNYC. But the charges conveniently disappeared after longtime Trump attorney Marc Kasowitz reportedly made a handful of large contributions to the campaign fund of the Manhattan district attorney handling the case.
During an impromptu press conference, Tillerson vehemently denied that he had ever considered resigning, as NBC News had reported, and affirmed his “commitment” to the administration. Tillerson, however, refused to address whether he had called the president a “moron,” as sources had also told NBC News, and called the situation “petty nonsense.”
When Trump met with Las Vegas massacre victims, he followed Sanders’ example and refused to address gun control. “We're not going to talk about that today," Trump said. "We won't talk about that.”

Day 259 — October 5
Civil Rights Act, Schmivil Rights Act
|
|
The Trump administration delivered yet another blow to LGBTQ rights with a new interpretation of the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act that will no longer protect transgender individuals, according to a memo from Sessions obtained by BuzzFeed.
The Trump administration came out with its first defense against the lawsuits challenging the transgender military ban. The argument? No one can sue yet because the ban doesn’t actually exist — even though Trump signed a presidential memorandum on the policy in August.
U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis joined the ranks of high-level Trump administration officials who back the Iran nuclear agreement in contradiction of the president, who’s expected to end the deal next week. Mattis told Congress, however, that the policy was in America’s best national security interest.
Trump warned of the “calm before the storm” during a photo op before a White House dinner with military leaders, offering no explanation when a reporter asked what he meant. Tens of thousands of immigrants who have work and education permitsunder the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program became vulnerable to deportation if they failed to meet the Department of Homeland Security’s midnight deadline to file paperwork. Many of them, however, didn’t even know that was the deadline.

Day 260 — October 6
Coming for free birth control
|
|
The Trump administration went after women’s health coverage, rolling back an Obamacare provision that obligated employers to cover women’s birth control. The changes go into effect immediately.
