Respected friends,
Like many of you, I woke up yesterday morning to the news of yet another mass shooting in our country – the deadliest in modern U.S. history – and I was immediately both deeply saddened and angered. Of course my first thoughts were with the victims, the families, the first responders, and all the others affected by the tragedy. But my thoughts were also focused on the senseless nature of these shootings, and how frustrating it is as a lawmaker to see so many ignore the fact that we have a real problem in this country with gun violence. No other industrialized country in the world has this same problem.I'm not advocating for the elimination of the Second Amendment right to bear arms, but when drafting the Constitution and Amendments 228 years ago, the founding fathers could not envision the current state of our union, or the magnitude of weaponry commercially available. We need real change, and I am committed to doing my part to keep this conversation in the forefront. We must do more to prevent gun violence! That's why I'm running for Congress!I support three commonsense ideas to prevent another Pulse, another Aurora, another Sandy Hook, another Las Vegas:
- a ban on assault weapons
- a ban on high capacity magazines
- finally closing the gun show loophole
When a disaster of any other nature occurs, we do something to prevent it in the future. And it's about time we finally do the same to prevent gun violence in this country. Thank you for standing with me, and if you'd like to share with me directly how you think we can prevent gun violence, please hit reply to this email. I promise you we'll be reading what you have to say.
David Richardson
Candidate for Congress, FL-27
