Tell me, Mr. Anderson. What good is a phone call, if you’re unable... to speak? -Agent Smith
|
|
Freedom of speech is only useful if you’re taught how to speak (and reason and listen) in a useful manner. Inside Education, students are forced to mainly practice listening or being spoken at. Without many opportunities to practice speaking, students are ill-prepared for the world.
To become better at public speaking, consider this simple three step plan:
First, define the why. Warren Buffet credits learning to speak publicly as one of the best investments he ever made. But not many people know he chickened out at least one time before he actually attended a public speaking course he enrolled in. So if you’re beating yourself up about not speaking publically, stop it!
Second, verbalize any fear you have about speaking publicly and write it down. Now, we’re aware of the danger and can begin making preparations to insure they don’t happen, or if they do, you’re prepared for them.
Third, your fear of public speaking will decrease through acclimating yourself to it through incredibly small steps.
Start small. Begin voicing your ideas in meetings or while in conversations with acquaintances. Then do the same with strangers. Do this for a month. You might be embarrassed, or disheartened by the experience. But no matter what, if you do it you will subtly gain more confidence. Now make a bigger step:
Make commitments to speak you can’t back out of.
Get on Meetup and find any meetup to attend that is nearby you tonight. Register to attend, ideally pay money to help ensure you show up and don’t back out. You’ll be forced to introduce yourself. Repeat this exercise and you’ll begin to remove your fear of public speaking. Over time, you can ask to schedule a talk or lead the meetup. Or, you can go full blown Tyler Durden and get your kicks attending meetups and crying while Meatloaf hugs you (joking!).
Boom. You’re on your way to more confidence in your public speaking ability!

News that matters
➜ Research shows that making gestures while you speak will increase your creativity. Gesticulate away to help find the words to say! ➜ Scientists from John Hopkins are finding that improv classes will help you learn how to speak on your feet. We know, what a shocker. The shocking part is why so few people who harbor a fear of public speaking or want to think more quickly on their feet refuse to attend one! Side-note from the editor: I’ve now skipped two improv classes I was planning to attend. Get out and do it! ➜ The next time you’re turned off by someone’s voice, take it to heart. A new study recently published in Evolutionary Psychology shows that people could accurately assess whether someone had cheated on their romantic partner just by listening to the sound of their voice.

Peter Dinklage (from Game of Thrones and other movies) has a killer commencement speech that not many people have seen. It’s well worth watching and listening carefully.
|
|
It’s a battle to conquer the fear of speaking publicly. Why? Because throughout history those who spoke up in front of the group either became temporary leaders… or they got killed by the group! Evolutionarily, we remember the stakes of speaking publicly, but the modern risks of it are far, far less than they used to be. But it’s still a battle. We’re listening to the Tempest (to ride those wonderful emotions that come prior to public speaking) and Started from the Bottom to boost the ol’ confidence levels.

The shooter in Las Vegas easily and legally purchased an accessory called a "bump stock" that turned his semi-automatic rifle into an automatic weapon that fires hundreds of rounds per minute.
The Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 would have banned "bump stocks," and if Congress had passed it four years ago, lives likely would have been saved. Now, Democrats in Congress have introduced a bill to do just that and finally ban these dangerous tools that allowed a man to kill 58 people and injure hundreds more.
I'm running for Congress because I think we need to finally end senseless gun violence – not ignore it. That's why I've called for a ban on assault weapons, a ban on high capacity magazines, and closing the gun show loophole. Now I'm joining my fellow Democrats in Congress on calling for a ban on dangerous accessories like "bump stocks" that serve no purpose other than to kill.
I am committed to keeping this conversation in the forefront and to passing meaningful legislation to prevent gun violence, but I want to hear from you:
|
Do you think Congress needs to act right now to prevent gun violence?

A credit freeze -- which prevents lenders from accessing your credit report -- is the only way to protect yourself from new account identity theft. Most of the country, approximately 158 million consumers between 18-65 years old in 42 states and Washington, D.C., must pay a fee to get credit freezes. We think credit freezes should be free for everyone.
We did some research to find out how much credit freezes, temporary lifts or "thaws", and permanent thaws cost at each bureau by state.
We created an interactive map to find out how much you'll need to pay. Take a look.
If all consumers in those states between 18-65 years old choose to freeze their reports today, that will cost them an estimated $4.1 billion.1 Equifax lost our info but we have to pay to protect ourselves? Credit freezes should be free for everyone, not just consumers in eight U.S. states.
Some fees are waived, reduced or even increased by bureaus in some states for certain categories of consumers, including active duty servicemembers, victims of domestic violence or minors. Only identity theft victims get freezes and thaws or permanent lifts for free in every state.
We've called on Equifax to offer free credit freezes at all three bureaus and we're also supporting national legislation that would provide free credit freezes and lifts. But our advice? Don't wait on either of these. You should freeze your credit today.
Thanks,
Andre Delattre
Executive Director

Even fashion designers want mom's dumplings
|
If you think food and fashion don't mix, talk to designer Jason Wu. "I am obsessed with fashion and food, there are constantly new trends emerging, but the classics will always be there," he says. "In some cases trends start from the reinterpretation of a classic… I remember having shaved ice as a kid in Taiwan and Snowdays brought it to NY and made it cool." When not designing the kind of outfit we dream of living in, Wu enjoys whipping up Ina Garten's recipe for chocolate chip cookies, feasting on glazed duck at Indochine and going home to his mother's dumplings. This recipe comment reads like a 74-word romance novel
|
"This has been my go-to brownie recipe for 30 years. In the ’80s, an acquaintance in Germany to whom I brought some of the brownies, and who considered herself a great cook, asked for the recipe but was never able to get it to work. She kept asking me what she was doing wrong and I was never able to solve her problem. Eventually, she moved to the U.S. and stole my husband!" Wait, what?? NYTimes editors deemed this comment left by Sydne Newberry in 2015 the best they'd ever received. But there's more to the story. The Cut reached out to Newberry for the whole tale. Don't worry, it's a (mostly) happy ending… HEAR THE WHOLE STORY [ The Cut]

Nourish the body and calm your mind with Health Ranger Select Organic Rooibos Powder
Apart from being nutritionally dense with antioxidants and minerals, rooibos is also known to be made without caffeine and oxalic acid, as well as being low in tannins. This makes rooibos tea an even better choice than the ever-popular green and black tea, as those two teas contain these substances in higher amounts. You won't have to worry about sleepless nights or kidney stones when you hunker down and relax with a cup of rooibos tea made with Health Ranger Select Organic Rooibos Powder. You only need to think about how to take it next, whether as a smoothie, juice, or latte.
