The Trump administration went after women’s health coverage, rolling back an Obamacare provision that obligated employers to cover women’s birth control. The changes went into effect immediately. Lawsuits immediately followed.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions made it legal to fire someone for being gay. The memo he issued didn’t create any new laws but rather instructed agencies to do as much as they can to protect the religious liberty of individuals and employers at the expense of civil rights. In a rare twist, Trump didn’t tweet at all. It’s the first day this month that Trump has laid low on Twitter. The president usually only stays away from Twitter if it’s a particularly volatile day for his presidency, such as when fired FBI Director James Comey gave televised testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee in June.

Day 261 — October 7
Just a man and his tweets
|
|
As he is wont to do, the president spent much of Saturday tweeting. Trump tweeted about:
Past presidents’ failure to negotiate with North Korea. “ Sorry, but only one thing will work!”
“More or more people” calling for him and Republicans to be given “Equal Time” on late-night television, where hosts frequently criticize Trump.
Calling Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to talk healthcare. (“Who knows!”)
-
The RNC getting “far more” money in donations than the DNC.
The team at FEMA preparing for Hurricane Nate, which was downgraded to a tropical depression the following day as it made landfall in the U.S.
Mike Huckabee, the father of Trump’s press secretary, landed an interviewwith Trump on his new show on the Trinity Broadcasting Network. Needless to say, Huckabee wasn’t exactly playing hardball with his daughter’s boss, but the talk touched on numerous policy issues.
Trump claimed the U.S. is “the highest-taxed nation in the world,” a false claim he’s often made.
Trump and Huckabee discussed Melania’s “popularity”: She has a 44 percent favorability rating, according to a recent CNN poll, consistent with first ladies typically enjoying higher approval ratings than their husbands.
Trump said he wanted to try to bring peace to Israel and Palestine before moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Day 262 — October 8
Uncorking the drama
|
|
Trump and Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, a Republican, spent the day trading insults. The spat began when Trump tweeted out that Corker had begged the president to endorse him for reelection in Tennessee but ultimately “didn’t have the guts to run!” Trump also said he turned down Corker’s requested to be secretary of state because Corker “is largely responsible for the horrendous Iran deal!”
Corker responded on Twitter — where most political discourse unfolds these days, apparently — about an hour later with an unprecedented attack on the president from within his own party. “It's a shame the White House has become an adult day care center,” Corker tweeted. “Someone obviously missed their shift this morning.”
Later that evening, Corker gave an interview to the New York Times where he said Trump treated the White House like “a reality show” and could put the U.S. “on the path to World War III.”
Vice President Mike Pence caused a stir when he left an Indianapolis Colts game right after the national anthem, during which some players took a knee. "I left today's Colts game because @POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem," he later wrote on Twitter.
Turns out it was a planned political stunt. “I asked @VP Pence to leave stadium if any players kneeled, disrespecting our country. I am proud of him and @SecondLady Karen,” Trump tweeted.

Day 263 — October 9
So much for the "calm before the storm"
|
|
Iran threatened to bomb American bases if Trump pushes ahead with new sanctions. The president has called the 2015 Iran nuclear deal “the worst deal ever” and is expected to end the deal before its Oct. 15 deadline. Trump “threw a fit” when his aides tried to persuade him to maintain the Iran nuclear deal in July, a source later told the Washington Post.
If Congress wants Trump to sign legislation to protect Dreamers — undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. as children — anytime in the future, it needs to cough up more money for Trump’s border wall, the White House demanded.
Scott Pruitt, already under fire for his coziness with the fossil fuel industry, told a crowd of coal miners that he would repeal the Clean Power Plan, a key part of Obama’s legacy that sharply curbed greenhouse gas emissions from power plants in 2015. “The war against coal is over,” Pruitt said. When a think tank later analyzed his methodology for the repeal, researchers found that Pruitt had calculated the social cost of carbon for the U.S. only — not the global effects. White House aides regularly try to distract and delay Trump from enacting far-reaching and potentially disastrous policy decisions on a whim, senior White House staff and others close to the president told Politico. Even former chief of staff Reince Priebus would reportedly tell the president “next week” instead of “no.”

Day 264 — October 10
The IQ challenge
|
|
Trump teased an IQ-test faceoff with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who reportedly called Trump a “moron” after a July meeting although his spokesperson denied it.
“I think it’s fake news,” Trump said of Tillerson’s alleged name-calling in a wide-ranging interview with Forbes. “But if he did that, I guess we’ll have to compare IQ tests. And I can tell you who is going to win.”
Trump also reiterated his desire to end NAFTA in the Forbes interview. “ It's a great honor to have — I consider that a great accomplishment, stopping that,” he said. Soon after, however, Mexico warned Trump a repeal could jeopardizethe two countries’ joint efforts to combat the flow of drugs.
Trump called for a change in tax law to prevent the NFL from receiving “massive tax breaks,” which the organization does receive, particularly when it comes to the construction of stadiums.
Trump denied that he was considering firing his chief of staff, John Kelly, after Vanity Fair and others reported a growing sense of resentment between the pair. “This story is totally made up by the dishonest media,” Trumptweeted. “The Chief is doing a FANTASTIC job for me and, more importantly, for the USA!”
Trump claimed that the New York Times had tricked Sen. Bob Corker by “recording his conversation. Was made to sound a fool, and that’s what I am dealing with!” Corker was harshly critical of the president in his chat with the Times, which rebuked Trump’s accusations and said Corker had asked for the interview to be recorded.
Trump called out Jemele Hill, the ESPN anchor who was suspended for two weeks due to "a second violation of [their] social media guidelines.” Hill was suspended after she commented on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ assertion that players who “disrespect the flag” will not play. Trump was very enthusiastic about Jones’ comments.
"If you strongly reject what Jerry Jones said, the key is his advertisers,” Hill said. “Don't place the burden squarely on the players."

Day 264 — October 11
Attacking the press
|
|
Trump ratcheted up his already-constant attacks on the free press. “Frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write, and people should look into it,” the president said during a meeting in the Oval Office with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Later, Trump tweetedthat network news “has become so partisan” that their broadcasting licenses should perhaps be revoked.
Trump announced that the federal government is “awarding” $1 million to Las Vegas to “help local law enforcement working OT to respond to last Sunday’s tragedy.”
Trump applauded NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for “finally demanding that all players STAND” for the National Anthem. The NFL later told ESPN the commentary was an inaccurate characterization of Goodell’s memo to the league’s 32 teams, which did ask players to stand but also recognized their motivations for kneeling. North Korea’s foreign minister of war warned that Trump had “lit the wick of war” when he threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea in September. Trump actually said as far back as July that he wanted the U.S. to have 10 times the nuclear weapons it has now, three officials in the meeting told NBC.

Day 265 — October 12
Trying to kill Obamacare
|
|
Trump signed an executive order that experts worry could throw Obamacare exchanges into a “death spiral.” The move allows individuals and small businesses to band together in “association health plans” — which Trump described as saving people from the “Obamacare nightmare.”
In a series of tweets, Trump warned that the U.S. “cannot keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!” Trump has wildly praised U.S. relief efforts in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, while repeatedly attacking the island’s government for not helping enough.
White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, who replaced Reince Priebus just two months ago, said during a surprise press appearance that he was not hired to control Trump’s tweets. He also rebutted claims that his relationship with his boss has soured, and said his job was not in jeopardy. "I don't think I'm being fired today, and I am not so frustrated in this job that I'm thinking of leaving," Kelly told reporters. Someone finally ctrl+F searched the EPA’s four-year strategic plan — and it contains not a single reference to climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, or carbon dioxide.

|
Day 266 — October 13
More cuts to Obamacare
|
|
The White House promised to scrap a key component of Obamacare that helped nearly 6 million low-income people pay for healthcare this year. The move — which will cause premiums to increase 20 percent in 2018, according to the nonpartisan Congress Budget Office — will also likely destabilize insurance markets. Trump restarted the so-called “war on Christmas.” “You go to department stores and they’ll say 'Happy New Year,' or they’ll say other things and it’ll be red, they’ll have it painted. But they don’t say — well guess what? We’re saying merry Christmas again.”
