| In a new EPI report, Cornell professor Alexander J.S. Colvin finds that 56 percent of private-sector nonunion workers—more than 60 million people—are subject to mandatory arbitration. This means that if their employment rights are violated, they cannot bring their claim before a court of law; they are instead required to go through an arbitration process that research shows overwhelmingly favors employers. So, when a worker is paid less than she is owed, or is fired for being pregnant or is underpaid because of her race, she cannot have her claim heard in a court of law, and is instead locked into a process that favors the employer. In a new report, EPI researchers Emma García and Elaine Weiss analyze data from the kindergarten classes of 1998 and 2010 and find that children in the lowest socioeconomic status (SES) quintile continue to lag well behind children in the highest SES quintile in both cognitive and noncognitive skills at the start of kindergarten. This is significant because research shows that children who start behind tend to stay behind—they are rarely able to make up the lost ground. Further, these gaps have not budged—they have remained substantially the same from 1998 to 2010. In a companion piece, García and Weiss suggest comprehensive strategies to mitigate these early skills gaps and to provide ongoing support for children throughout their academic years. |

On September 26, EPI’s Lawrence Mishel and Heidi Shierholz participated in a forum hosted by the Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution. Mishel joined Harvard’s Jason Furman in a discussion of wage stagnation and wage inequality, pointing out in his opening remarks that “there’s a theme here that unites the factors [that are causing wage inequality]: they all reflect policy choices made on behalf of the most powerful that undercut the ability of workers to earn a decent paycheck.” In a follow-up panel exploring what policymakers can do to raise wages, Shierholz talked about the importance of improving labor standards for low- and middle-wage workers by increasing the minimum wage, raising the overtime pay threshold, and enforcing wage theft violations.
