Catherine Cortez Masto for Senate
Respected friends –
Here we go again. Republicans just rammed through yet another disastrous health care "replacement." Trumpcare 2.0 is even worse than the original version – harming even more people and gutting protections for people with preexisting conditions. While the GOP's first repeal bill would have left 24 million people, many of who gained coverage from the Affordable Care Act, without insurance, this bill is even more dangerous. Trumpcare 2.0 would result in those with preexisting conditions – the exact folks who need coverage the most – with less access to health care at an even higher cost. For many Americans, affordable health care is literally a matter of life and death. That's why I need you to stand with Democrats in a united front to tell the GOP: Don't gut our health care! Will you sign our petition to join us and say enough is enough – drop the attacks on the Affordable Care Act? One of the most critical and valuable pieces of the Affordable Care Act is the fact that insurance companies are prohibited from denying people coverage because they are or have been sick. And make no mistake about it: Gutting this critical provision would result in skyrocketing premiums for those who are sick with far less access to care And what's even more egregious about Trumpcare 2.0 is that the GOP wants to keep ACA-level protections for themselves but strip them from every other American. They know how harmful this bill is, and even they don't want it! This is the definition of reckless, and I'm sick and tired of it. I'm committed to this fight, but I need to know you're still with us in protecting our health care. Will you join me and tell the GOP to abandon these relentless attacks on our health care? If the GOP refuses to get the message the American people have sent loud and clear, then we're only going to keep getting louder.
¡La lucha sigue! The fight continues!
Catherine

Whoa! Touchscreen, video or voice calls in the new Amazon Echo?
Dear CNET members,

Happy Tuesday, everyone! Many of you have been subscribed to the Community newsletter for a long time -- some of you dating back to me having my first kid, trying to get my daughter to stop sucking her thumb, to us getting our puppy. And I want to thank you for your readership and loyalty as it means a lot to me! However, I'm only a teeny-tiny part of the team that magically makes CNET what it is today, and I'd like to introduce to you a new CNET column called: Get to know the CNET family. This column is produced by me where I introduce to you our entire staff one at a time as a way for you, our loyal readers, to get to know us better and what we do at CNET. To kick things off here is my first one. I hope you enjoy it and stay tuned for more to come. Now off to the new Amazon Echo, Show! Well folks, the rumors that Amazon is going to release an Echo with a screen are coming true! Amazon just revealed the Echo Show -- a smart speaker/voice assistant with a built-in 7-inch touch screen and camera. The screen will allow you to do voice-assisted shopping, view videos, weather forecasts, music lyrics and photos, and check on security-camera feeds. It will even allow you to have video calls with other people who have an Echo Show. As Ben Fox Rubin says, "Amazon's Echo Show is a giant phone for your kitchen counter."?IMO, a screen is really what the Echo needed. If you are an Echo user like me, you already know how voice-only really limits the ability of these devices because there is only so much information that can be dictated. With a screen it brings a whole new dimension to the Echo where the possibilities are nearly limitless. I'd like for you to give this overview of the new Echo Show a read. Now when you are done reading it, tell us -- what do you think of the Echo Show overall? Do you like it? Are the screen and new features that come with it enticing enough for you to buy one? Why or why not? Can you see the new features like video calls, voice calling and security camera monitoring being useful to you? Or would you rather just stick with your phone, tablet or other devices to do all that? Do you think this will be a popular item, or do you think it will be a flop? Sound off in the comments and share your thoughts.

Kamala Harris

RESPECTED FRIENDS,

This evening President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. He did so based on the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
We don’t know all the facts yet and I promise you that I’ll do everything in my power to learn the truth. In the meantime, we know Comey was leading an investigation into Russia’s involvement in our presidential election and the Trump campaign. His firing puts that investigation into further question.
Furthermore, Jeff Sessions’ involvement in this decision raises more questions as he is influencing an investigation he pledged to recuse himself from after lying to Congress. That’s why I’m renewing my call for an independent special prosecutor to oversee that investigation who can find the unfettered truth. Add your name to my urgent petition if you agree that we need an investigation that's free from politics.
We cannot rest until we know the truth without partisan or personal influence. Thank you for joining me in this critical fight.
Kamala Harris
U.S. Senator, California

Climate Hawks Vote

The head of Donald Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency yesterday fired half of the scientists who serve on a key review board that affects major policy decisions. EPA chief Scott Pruitt denies the fact that humans are responsible for climate change. Now he’s pursuing an extreme anti-science purge in our federal government. He’s already removed several agency websites containing detailed climate data and scientific information. We can’t let deniers like Trump and Pruitt attempt to erase or gloss over the facts without calling them out.Can you make a contribution to Climate Hawks Vote? Together we’re holding polluters and climate deniers like Trump and Pruitt accountable. I hope you’ll join us by making a sustaining donation today.Yesterday’s purge is just a continuation of the Trump administration’s effort to sideline climate scientists in the interest of boosting profits for their friends in the fossil fuel industry. In fact, the EPA says they might even fill out the empty spaces on the scientific review board with employees currently on the payroll of Big Oil and other polluters.Today, Ivanka Trump is meeting with Scott Pruitt to decide whether or not to drop out of the landmark Paris climate agreement. The move comes just three days after the Department of Energy removed mentions of the Paris agreement from their website on climate change. Our job is to hold officials accountable for climate injustice. That’s why Climate Hawks Vote introduced the first and only congressional scorecard that rates members of Congress not just on key climate votes, but on their leadership for bold action. It’s why we mobilized against all of Trump’s Cabinet nominees and called out senators who supported them, Republican and Democrat. And it’s why we’ll continue to call out Trump and his climate-denying cronies for aiding and abetting the fossil-fuel industry in the destruction of our planet.

Former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates testified yesterday that she had warned the Trump administration about former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s conflicts with Russia 18 days before he was asked to resign. (President Obama apparently did too; his successor thought he was joking.)
The hearing was pretty bad for President Trump, and also for the GOP, who spent their time focusing on, you guessed it, Hillary Clinton’s emails.

Wow, Stjepan. The State Department just got caught red-handed promoting a Trump brand – AGAIN.
The first time, it was a web page promoting Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago resort as the "winter White House." This time, it was sharing a post on Twitter about Ivanka Trump’s new book.1
Both times, they removed the posts after getting called out by the press. It’s clear that the Trump administration’s approach is break the rules first, and only back down later if you get caught.
We can’t rely on a game of “ethics whack-a-mole” to rein in the Trump administration’s abuse of power for self-enrichment – especially since the worst abuses of taxpayer money could be yet to come.
Rex Tillerson, the Secretary of State, needs to immediately and unambiguously instruct his department that NO taxpayer money will go to promoting Trump brands and enriching the Trump family.
Thanks,
Kurt

RESPECTED FRIENDS
Another day, another ethics violation in the Trump administration. The State Department got caught promoting Mar-a-Lago on its website. Mar-a-Lago is Trump's private club in Florida where he often conducts White House business within earshot of the club's wealthy members.2
This is a clear abuse of public resources to help Trump profit from his presidency. Trump cannot be allowed to use the office of the president as one long marketing campaign for his hotels and resorts.
Federal ethics rules are clear on this issue. Employees should "not use public office for the endorsement of any product or service.”3
Rep. Barbara Lee called the incident “definitely unethical and probably illegal.”4
The administration’s concern for ethics rules have been lackadaisical at best. Kellyanne Conway plugged Ivanka Trump’s clothing brand in a February interview, and the administration brushed it off.5
The State Department removed the Mar-a-Lago blog post under public pressure. But that's no cause for celebration. The Trump administration is notorious for flouting the rules. And they only change course if they get caught.
That’s why Americans need a strong, definitive statement from Secretary of State Tillerson that using public resources to promote Trump’s businesses is never okay. Tillerson must also ensure all his employees understand and follow federal employee ethics rules.
Thanks for taking a stand,
Carli and the Rootstrikers Team

When Rivers Are Granted Legal Status as Persons

Members of New Zealand's indigenous Maori tribes have always regarded themselves as part of the universe—at one with and equal to the mountains, rivers, and seas. On March 15, 2017, after 140 years of negotiation, they helped a long-revered river, the Whanganui, gain "legal status as a person."

This means that polluting or damaging the river—New Zealand's third-longest—is now legally equivalent to harming a human.

Congress must impeach Donald Trump.

This shouldn't be a hard ask. There are numerous reasons why Trump should be removed from office. From his unconstitutional and un-American Muslim ban to his numerous business conflicts of interest that are generating personal profit for his family at taxpayer expense, Trump has proven over and over that he's unfit for office.
Today, Trump gave another powerful reason for his impeachment:In a repeat of Richard Nixon's most notorious actions during the Watergate scandal, Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. Why did he fire Comey? Trump says it's because Comey held a press conference last summer exonerating Hillary Clinton for her emails. Others speculate it's because Comey is investigating the Trump campaign's ties to Russia. "They will put in a stooge who will shut down this investigation," said Jeffrey Toobin on CNN just now.Let's be clear, General Flynn had to step down because he lied about meeting with Russia. Jeff Sessions lied to the Senate about meeting with Russia. And there have been reports that the FBI warned Trump that Russia may have compromising information on him that they could use for blackmail. And that's only what we know so far. The FBI investigation into Trump and his campaign's possible collusion with Russian agents attempting to impact the Presidential election is critical to defending our democracy. We have no love lost for Comey, but Trump firing him in order to shut down the Russia investigation is yet another in a long line of impeachable offenses. This has to stop. Congress must act -- NOW. Sign the petition and tell Congress: Impeach Donald Trump. Impeachment will only happen if America demands it. Republicans in Congress will not act unless they feel like they have no choice. Republicans must be made to fear for their jobs more than they fear abandoning Trump. From challenging Republicans for re-election even in dark red seats to showing up in force at town halls nationwide, the resistance is making it harder and harder to be a Republican in America. That's why it's time to turn up the heat and force them on defense.Eight cities across America have called for Trump to be impeached -- joined just this week by Los Angeles. One of the articles of impeachment that Congress was set to pass before Nixon resigned in 1974 cited his efforts to interfere with investigations into the White House -- so Trump's action today clearly qualifies as grounds for impeachment. This cannot wait any longer. Trump is trying to silence his critics and shut down investigations into his crimes. If he gets away with this, worse crimes and abuses will follow. We must draw the line here and now. Tell Congress: It's time to impeach Donald Trump. Sign DFA's petition right now.

Thank you for fighting back.

Respected friends,

Yesterday Sally Yates, the acting Attorney General fired by Donald Trump, testified before a Senate committee about her efforts to warn the Trump administration about improper contacts with Russian officials.Let’s be clear. The White House was told the National Security Director was a potential threat to America's security. And what did they do? Nothing at all, for 18 days, until the Washington Post reported that Flynn had lied to Vice President Pence -- and that’s only the beginning. The American people deserve the full truth about the Trump administration’s Russia connections. Add your name now to tell the White House to stop obstructing this investigation.During the past few weeks, we’ve seen the Russian government attempt to interfere in the French elections using the same cyber tactics they used in the U.S.
Thankfully, the French government acted swiftly and decisively to denounce these tactics and protect their democratic process from outside interference -- and those outside efforts were unsuccessful.Meanwhile here at home we see Republicans joining the Trump administration to block efforts to get to the bottom of what the Russians did in our elections and to attack those, like Sally Yates, who spoke up to try to protect our country.Sally Yates is an American patriot. Tell Republicans and the White House to stop obstructing the Senate investigation and standing in the way of finding the truth. The American people deserve answers. http://dscc.org/demand-answers-on-Russia-tiesThank you for standing up for what’s right,

Senator Chris Van Hollen
