Is Apple's hardware quality declining?
Dear CNET members,

Happy Friday! For those of you celebrating Memorial Day this weekend, a moment of silence to honor our fallen servicemen and women around the world who have made a huge sacrifice for our country -- we salute you and thank you for your service. This week's topic isn't our typical how-to Q&A, but an observation made by your fellow member Fausto who is a loyal Apple customer. In the past few years he has noticed his Apple products having an increasing number of technical problems, but his family members have noticed the same thing. And he has come to ask you if others are experiencing the same -- and whether you think Apple could be lowering quality to encourage you to buy replacements. We have a few members who have chimed in with some great responses to Fausto's observation. Many people see deteriorating quality in not just Apple products, but many other brands as well, and in everything from household appliances to cars. Some think it's planned obsolescence, some don't. It's a hard question to answer, but it's very interesting to see what people think about this. Personally, I don't think this is a problem exclusive to Apple. Today, we as consumers demand more from our devices -- asking for more battery life, more features, and on top of that for them to be lightweight and easier to carry around, but able to stand up to constant physical use and abuse. Providing all that isn't a simple task for manufacturers. So I think that's part of what's going on. What do you think of Fausto's question? Give it a read and join in the conversation! Have fun, be respectful to one another and have a wonderful weekend. Thank you, everyone! Have suggestions or a topic for discussion? Shoot me an email.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
The topic I want to suggest is about Apple products. Is it just me? Or is their quality declining, or at least, noticeably lower than their competitors? I have been a more or less loyal Apple customer, but lately I have noticed all around me people with 'dead' Apple products to which Apple's answer is 'sometimes electronic products fail'. The truth is, I have a 15-year-old computer, an 11-year-old laptop, another 8-year-old laptop, a 12ish-year-old iPod Mini, a 10ish-year-old iPod Touch, a 4ish-year-old Samsung Galaxy SIII, multiple 'old flip phone' era phones... I can keep going. All still working just fine. But in the last couple of years I saw my wife's iPhone 5 failing twice, fortunately fixed by Apple, my dad's iPhone 6+'s death (on its 14th month!!! and Apple did not take care of it), my son's iPad (on its 3rd year, and Apple said 'sometimes that happens'), an uncle's iPad (a couple years old), failing for no apparent reason, my son's Mac, still in guarantee fortunately, with a scrambled HD, just to name a few close to me. I am not talking about water damage or abuse. Simply, one day you wake up and they are dead. They either simply don't come on, or they stay stuck in the Apple logo and there is nothing you can do about it...(click here to read entire question)

NEXT WEEK'S QUESTION
Hi, I am trying to find an app for both the iOS and Android OS to back up the various cell phones in my household. I can have the backup run to either a PC (with external HD storage), or a NAS (Both D-LINK 320 and Netgear ReadyNAS 102). The backup to an always-on NAS unit is preferable. I've been looking at software offerings from D-Link and Netgear, and I can't tell what will work. Ideally, automatic backup of the Photo and Video files over Wi-Fi is best, but if the user needs to initiate the backup, that would be acceptable. It would be GREAT if it only transferred new media. Any ideas or suggestions?

                                          Dear friends,
Canada’s biggest logging giant is dragging Greenpeace to court, demanding more than a quarter of a billion dollars. If they win, it would give greedy corporations everywhere a green light to silence all of us who stand up to them. But now we have a way to stop them. The one thing the logger cares about is profits. And some of their biggest customers are book publishers, who have a history of standing up for free speech and have strong commitments to sustainability.   All the major publishers are gathering in days at a major industry event -- let’s overwhelm them with a massive call to take their business elsewhere unless the case is dropped.

Tell publishers to stand up for free speech

Resolute Forest Products has logged some of Canada’s oldest, most majestic Boreal forests. And now, after a very successful campaign to demand a more sustainable way to do business, Resolute is accusing Greenpeace and Stand.earth of “conspiracy” for trying to stop the destruction -- and hurting their profits! The case could change campaigning forever, giving corporations a way to silence groups like Avaaz, and oil companies, loggers and miners free rein to destroy our beautiful planet, no questions asked. Right now, every dollar counts for Resolute, whose stock price has plummeted. It produces paper for some of the world’s biggest publishers -- companies like Penguin and Simon & Schuster that care about their reputations -- and the forests! When clients have spoken out before, Resolute listened. Let’s overwhelm major publishers before the biggest book conference of the year, asking them to tell Resolute to drop the lawsuit or risk losing some of their biggest customers.

Tell publishers to stand up for free speech

Avaazers have taken on corporations around the world -- and won! Together, we convinced clothing company Benetton to pay up for victims of Bangladesh’s Rana Plaza disaster, and more than a million of us stood up to stop Monsanto in Argentina. Now one of our major allies is defending corporate campaigning for all of us -- let's stand with them to stop these corporate thugs!

With hope and determination,
Allison, Antonia, Martyna, Bert, Alice and the whole Avaaz team

Thanks for asking publishers to do what they can to stop this crazy court case!

OMG. Did U C the Kim K and T Swift battle on Twitter?Last week, Kim Kardashian released a video that showed Taylor Swift approving a lyric in a song that she later was outraged over.Blah. Blah. Blah. You probably could care less what Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift are doing, but there’s a method to the madness. And It could make you a fortune online.Few people want to hear this junk and even fewer actually care about it.But why is it what most people use their computers for?Computers are social media on steroids. People can scroll through multiple tabs from multiple social media platforms reading every gossip headline imaginable. Then they can wage a war in the comments and argue whatever they want however long they want all from the safety of their keyboard without ever having to actually face the person they’re fighting. But computers didn’t start this way. When they were first created, computers were for the smartest people in the world. People who were developing technology that would connect the entire world one day. People who understood computer code and microchips. And now computers are for worthless gossip stories, misleading information, scams, and wasting time. But you can change all that by working for MTTB.MTTB is a user friendly online system where affiliates place ads on the most popular websites on Earth and receive the commissions for their sales. So instead of using your computer to read viral news stories and avoid work at your desk job, you can make money while other people waste time online and leave your desk job behind.MTTB works so well that if you don’t earn a commission within 30 days of finishing your training you’ll get the $49 you give to join back x 10! That’s a $500 bet that MTTB will turn your computer into a moneymaker.

It was closer than anyone ever expected
Trump's budget would cut: Medicaid by $600 billion, funding for Planned Parenthood down to $0; Food Stamps by $193 billion; Social Security Disability Insurance by $72 billion; and CHIP (Children's Health Insurance Program) by $5.8 billion
Donald Trump won Montana by 20 points -- 55%-35% -- last fall. But thanks to a heroic effort from DFA members like you, we narrowed that margin to just six points. Rob Quist may have lost, but you helped him nearly pull off a stunning upset.Rob Quist couldn't have made this a close race without you. DFA members were making calls into Montana even before the DC establishment paid any attention to the race. DFA members like you -- along with grassroots volunteers mobilized by MoveOn, Swing Left, and other groups -- used DFA Dialer to make more than 850,000 calls to Montana voters since mid-April. Those calls helped build a grassroots groundswell for Quist.Although we lost last night, the close margin provides a lot of hope going forward. According to Five Thirty Eight's Harry Enten:"There are 64 GOP-held seats that are 13 points redder than the nation as a whole or less. Now, Democrats likely won't win all 64, but that's why a mid-single digit loss for a Democrat in Montana suggests that a lot of seats are in play for them in 2018."That's exactly what happened in Montana. Rob Quist ran a progressive campaign rooted in populist values, and with your help, we made this a far closer race than anyone ever expected. If we build grassroots power like this in seats across the country, starting next month in Georgia, we have a real shot at winning back Congress.Republicans are clearly on the ropes -- it's time to deliver them a big defeat. There are two more special elections in Congress coming up in just a few weeks -- for Jimmy Gomez in California and Jon Ossoff in Georgia. Can you chip in $5 or more to defeat Trump's candidates and help elect DFA Democrats? This election was a close loss, but DFA-endorsed candidates have been racking up an impressive record of victories this spring in crucial local elections:Chokwe Lumumba won a huge victory the Democratic primary for mayor of Jackson, Mississippi on a transformative left-wing platform -- and is the front-runner for the June 6 runoff.Larry Krasner won an amazing victory in this month's primary for Philadelphia District Attorney, pledging to implement major reforms to the criminal justice system, including ending cash bail and abolishing the death penalty. Yvette Simpson won a stunning upset victory in the Democratic primary for mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio. DFA members helped provide crucial campaign infrastructure and resources that helped her turn out progressive voters. Now we need to help her win in November against a Rahm Emanuel-style Democrat.Mayor Aja Brown won her primary in Compton, California -- and is in a strong position to win the runoff on June 6. Now we must continue the momentum that DFA members like you have built in those cities -- and in Montana. There are two more critical special elections for Congress coming up in the next few weeks and it's going to take all hands on deck to win.In Georgia, Jon Ossoff is running in the 6th Congressional District against extreme anti-choice Republican Karen Handel. This is Tom Price's old district, and Ossoff nearly won outright in the primary. If he wins the June 20 runoff, it will be further evidence that Americans are ready to throw Republicans out of office for supporting Trump and attacking health care.In California, Jimmy Gomez is running in the 34th Congressional District against a corporate Republican-turned-Democrat. Gomez has been a progressive champion in the California legislature and will help fight for a progressive agenda in Congress -- but only if we help him win the runoff on June 6.The Democratic party needs to know that in the current political environment, with more people energized to kick Republicans out of office than ever before, seats like this are winnable -- but only if we get in early, organize and fight to win. We cannot afford for the party to wait until after the November 2018 elections to adopt a strategy that will flip control of the House. We just proved in Montana we have the chance to win in congressional elections all across America. DFA members stepped up in these races before the DC establishment showed up. And we need you to step up again. Will you chip in $3 or more now to help DFA defeat Trump Republicans?Thank you for helping lead the resistance. Thanks to the Citizens United decision, Big Money interests are spreading their corrupting influence into all levels of government.Across the country, they are buying up local governments and trying to push their Big Money agenda. So we’re starting a Progressive Action Fund to raise $15,OOO this week to directly support local initiatives that will stop Big Money. Can you chip in $1 to help progressive ballot measures directly?

Support the Clean Missouri Initiative!

Our Progressive Action Fund starts with supporting the Clean Missouri Initiative -- to end corruption and lobbyist influence in their government. It will bring REAL reforms to their state’s campaign finance system to promote transparency and ethics.Let’s do this, friends!
