This is the time to draw clear lines of distinction: You are either with the neo-Nazis, fascists, neo-Confederates, and Donald Trump’s inner circle of alt-right extremists—or you are against them. 
I have chosen my side. And so has The Nation. We have denounced Donald Trump’s mad attempt to equate white supremacists who spew racist dogma with those who oppose racism, xenophobia, sexism, and inequality. We have decried the president’s view that “very fine people” march in defense of the twisted legacy of slavery and segregation. But it is not enough to condemn Trump. One of the duties of a president is to heal the wounds of the nation. Donald Trump had a chance to promote that healing in the agonizing hours following the murder in Charlottesville of Heather Heyer by a neo-Nazi who plowed his car into a crowd of Americans who were merely demanding “justice for all.” The president could have made it absolutely clear that his administration would never make excuses for white supremacy; he could have explicitly rejected a politics that reopens old wounds in order to divide Americans along lines of race, ethnicity, gender, and class. We at The Nation are appalled by the president’s position. And we are committed to providing independent, progressive journalism—the kind of journalism that holds white supremacists, and their apologists, to account.  We are on the right side of history.
