Since the creation of the world, the Holy One’s breath has been dividing waters (Genesis 1:9) and stirring hearts (1 Samuel 3:10). Genesis 1:1-3 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and Ruach (Spirit/Wind) of God hovered over the surface of the waters. Then God said, ‘Light, be.’ And there was light.” At the sound of His voice, we see creation immediately springing into action in order to shema (hear and obey) the voice of the Creator.
I have heard it said that the wind blowing through the trees, over the mountains, and stirring up the oceans today is the same wind breathed by God in Genesis 1 to create order out of chaos. It is the same breath that was used to speak purpose and meaning into something that was “formless and void.”
We can see throughout history how the divine breath of God has still spoken purpose and meaning over something that was once empty and disorganized.
