The latest attempt by Republicans in Congress to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act would cut federal funding to states by $215 billion over ten years, according to a new analysis released today. As many as 32 million Americans could lose their insurance by the end of this decade. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), one of the architects of this latest travesty, promised Jimmy Kimmel he would never support such a bill, but surprise! He’s now saying that Kimmel simply doesn’t understand. |

The news about Equifax's massive data breach keeps getting worse.
At the end of last week, we found out that
Equifax left its systems vulnerable by ignoring a basic software patch for over two months.1 The result? Nearly half of all Americans' Social Security numbers and home addresses are now in the hands of hackers.
Since the news of the data breach broke we've mobilized our entire team to get critical information about how to respond into consumers' hands. And we're doing everything we can to make sure folks can protect themselves without having to pay for Equifax's negligence. We've already sent hundreds of toolkits to legislators and media organizations across the country with information on how to respond, and drafted sample policies that states can use to ensure their residents have access to free credit freezes.
We can't afford to let up now -- we're launching an emergency fundraising campaign to support our work to protect consumers and to hold Equifax accountable for its actions. Contribute to U.S. PIRG today.Our efforts are already paying off. Since the news broke, staff in our state network have helped introduce 'Free Credit Freeze' bills in two state legislatures, and are working hard to add more.
We're also mobilizing support for Sen. Elizabeth Warren's federal bill that would give all Americans the ability to freeze and unfreeze their credit at the three major credit bureaus at no cost. Credit freezes are an important step toward making sure that hackers can't rack up debt on behalf of the 143 million Americans affected by this breach -- and these bills ensure that we won't have to pay for Equifax's mistake.
And we aren't done yet. We're going to keep getting the media to cover this important story, and send critical resources to the people who are most likely to be affected by identify theft as a result of the data breach -- including members of the armed forces, senior citizens, and students. At the same time, we'll be working to make sure all Americans can protect themselves from incidents like these, without having to foot the bill for credit bureaus' mistakes.
We've set an emergency fundraising goal of raising $20,000 before midnight on Friday in order to double down on this campaign and do more to protect consumers in the future. Give to U.S. PIRG today.Here's just some of what your support will make possible:

143 million Americans were affected by this breach -- there's a 1 in 2 chance that hackers now have the 'skeleton keys' to open accounts or even credit cards in your name.

Less than two weeks before Donald Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination, his campaign chairman offered to provide briefings on the race to a Russian billionaire closely aligned with the Kremlin, according to people familiar with the discussions.
Paul Manafort made the offer in an email to an overseas intermediary, asking that a message be sent to Oleg Deripaska, an aluminum magnate with whom Manafort had done business in the past, these people said.“If he needs private briefings we can accommodate,” Manafort wrote in the July 7, 2016, email, portions of which were read to The Washington Post along with other Manafort correspondence from that time.The emails are among tens of thousands of documents that have been turned over to congressional investigators and Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s team as they probe whether Trump associates coordinated with Russia as part of Moscow’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 U.S. election. |
