The Brief: You Know What Hygge Is, But Are You Ready For Fika?

Better Than a PSL
Starbucks did something awesome this week and it doesn't even involve caramel and a clever name. On Thursday the coffee giant announced it would be expanding its parental leave policies. The New York Times reported it will now give new parents up to 18 weeks of paid leave. This is significant as Starbucks previously offered six weeks of leave at 67 percent pay for biological mothers and adoptive parents, but no paid leave at all for fathers. This change also gives Starbucks the esteemed title of restaurant chain with the best maternity leave policy. In addition to being responsible for the Pumpkin Spice Latte craze, that's pretty good. Read more about it here.
Gimme a Break
OK so we have talked about hygge which is the Danish word for cozy, but is also a new concept of living that everyone is trying to achieve in life (and by achieve in life, I mean in pictures put on social media.) But now there is another Scandinavian life trend that you are supposed to adopt and this one is specifically suited for the workday. It's called fika and it is the Swedish practice of taking an afternoon break. Now, taking an afternoon coffee break (there is actually a Swedish coffee chain called fika inspired by this word) doesn't seem like rocket science and many of us probably already do this except you are probably not really practicing fika. With fika you are really taking a break from work and sitting down and enjoying a cup of coffee or tea. Work is put on pause. Anna Brones, co-author of Fika: The Art of the Swedish Coffee Break told Well & Good,  “Fika is not coffee in a to-go cup [that you sip] while sitting in front of your desk; it’s a break—even a short one—to just check out from the everyday for a few minutes.” You may be taking coffee breaks, but you are probably on your phone or just grabbing one and heading right back to the office. But we have a feeling Fika is why Sweden is the 10th happiest country in the world.
Word Up
You may be one of the youngest people in your office, but soon enough Gen Z will be invading (they are expected to comprise 40% of the North American population by 2020) and you better know their slang terms or you will never get in with them. For reals. We may have FOMO and totes, but do you know what "tea" means? And I don't mean the kind you drink. Like if you need help with a project you need some "milk." And then it is a whole new world when it comes to the lingo around social media. Like what if your friend texts you and you don't respond, but you by accident look at their Snap? Girl, you in a "Snap Trap." Some of these terms are just clever words for things we have been doing for years so we owe Gen Z some props (but I think we owe Gen X for that one.) Like when you "unsult" someone which is really just an "insult disguised as a compliment," or your friend that can post a pic to Instagram, Facebook and Snap all within 10 seconds? They are "cross platforming." And "tea" means gossip for Gen Z. Be sure to be clear about that if you are trying to get your intern to get you a cup of "tea" with "milk" because they may just tell you who is hungover and find your stapler. XOXO, Tea Girl.

Women's Marches Nationwide Illustrate What Makes America Great

Noelle and Melanie Shahin, a mother and daughter from San Jose, California, marched on Washington to defend the environment and immigrants, and in memory of their mother and grandmother, who was sent to a Japanese internment camp.

"I look at the faces of my children—they are of Japanese and Iraqi descent," Noelle said. "How can I not march?"
