No Woman No Cry

Well this is a bit of a head scratcher. Research group LedBetter launched its gender equality index and interactive application today to spotlight the gender ratio of company leaders at nearly 2,000 major consumer brands. They found that at brands that target women have very few women on their executive boards. For example Coty, which sells Rimmel makeup, Sally Hansen beauty products and fragrances by Beyonce, Katy Perry, Halle Berry and Jennifer Lopez — has no women on its executive team or board. L Brands, which owns Victoria’s Secret and Bath and Body Works, has a LedBetter Index score of 8.3, with zero women on its executive team and 17% female representation on its board. But then again Mattel, maker of Barbie (which was invented by a woman), has no women on its executive team. Really? The index ranks 230 brands and companies based on female representation on the board and female representation in executive leadership on a scale of 0 to 100. A handful of brands completely flunked because they had zero women on their boards.

Night Owl

You thought you were doing the healthy thing. You actually got in bed at a decent hour like everyone says you should. But alas you’ve been laying there for hours and can’t fall asleep. What gives? Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine analyzed the sleeping habits of more than 500 peoplewho had kept sleep journals for more than six months and made some interesting discoveries. Basically they found that spending more time in bed actually makes it harder to sleep. According to the preliminary findings, by restricting time spent in bed 70 to 80 percent of people who have sleep troubles can prevent it from turning into chronic insomnia. If you find yourself having trouble sleeping get out of bed and do something else. If you wake up extra early, just start the day. Staying awake instead of fighting to get back to sleep is one of the best non-medicated treatments for insomnia.

Spinning Tops

Big day for snacks and really confusing movies. Remember that movie Inception? The one that you pretended you totally understood, but then when you actually start trying to explain it your head starts to hurt. Ugh and that ending. Well now it seems that the concept of dreams within dreams within dreams are now being applied to our snack foods. Oreo just announced its latest flavor which will be cookies and cream. MarketWatch describes it as a “a cookie flavor based on an ice cream flavor which is based on an Oreo cookie.” Wow. That is really conceptual for an afternoon snack. Basically an Oreo is technically cookies and cream so the this new Oreo flavor is the flavor of Oreo. Get it? I definitely don’t. OMG Leo DiCaprio couldn’t even explain this. But don’t worry, you don’t have to have a conceptual crisis when you eat an Oreo until 2017. However, right now you can eat an Inception Donut which is just a donut with donuts on it decorated with tiny donuts. Wow. Cronuts may require you to get in line at 5 am, but at least you won’t have an existential crisis when you eat them.

They still remain insiders, cling to their power and the GOP establishment gives them legitimacy by refusing to shun them. Fernández: “Give More Power” to Bishops’ Conferences

By Maike Hickson on Jun 14, 2016 02:34 pm
The story surrounding the somewhat controversial papal advisor and ghostwriter of Amoris Laetitia, Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernández, continues. As we had reported, Cardinal Gerhard Müller, in the June 2016 issue of Herder Korrespondenz, recently refuted as being potentially heretical Fernández’ 2015 claim that the pope himself could very well reside also in places other than [...]

The Fatherhood Crisis: At Home & in the Church

By Steve Skojec on Jun 14, 2016 01:50 pm
When it comes to fatherhood, I’m a bit of a mess. Despite all the opportunities seven children provide, I’ve realized I’m not very good at it. Despite the feelings of paternal affection I have for my amazing children, I struggle immensely in my attempts to understand, on a practical level, what they truly require from me. I [...]

Cardinal Müller Rejects Image of Doctrinal “Throwing Stones”

By Maike Hickson on Jun 14, 2016 11:52 am
Just a few days ago, OnePeterFive was able to highlight an important allusive statement made by Cardinal Gerhard Müller, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, about Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernández, whose undifferentiated idea that the pope need not necessarily reside in Rome in order to govern the Catholic Church was labeled [...]
