Over the last two years, we’ve seen highly confusing things happen at OnePlus. The company built by Pete Lau and Carl Pei started off by only accepting purchases for the OnePlus One if you had an invite. That awful invite system stuck around for when the OnePlus 2 was released, and there was even the label […]

While the Sierra Club's work must go on, we need to acknowledge the horrific events of June 12 in Orlando. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and their loved ones in the aftermath of this senseless act of violence. It is no exaggeration to characterize the June 12 slayings as an attack on freedom itself. And so, with heavy hearts but a refusal to bow to the twisted objectives of the deranged Orlando killer, we carry on.

Demand Justice for Exxon's Climate Coverup
ExxonMobil spent decades deceiving the public and investors about the damage its activities were causing to our climate. Instead of joining the growing effort to get to the bottom of the scandal, Republican members of the House science committee are questioning the investigators -- in a blatant attempt to protect Big Oil by intimidating law enforcement officials and prosecutors.
Urge these climate deniers to stop harassing investigators and standing in the way of justice!
Taxpayers Shouldn't Pay for Big Coal's Mess
As more coal companies go bankrupt, American taxpayers are being stuck with cleaning up the mess they've left behind. That's not how the law is supposed to work. Before a coal company can get a permit for a new mining site, it's supposed to put up bonds to cover the costs of reclaiming the mine site. But some mine operators have taken advantage of a loophole that lets them shirk their responsibility.
Tell the Department of the Interior and Secretary Jewell that taxpayers shouldn't be stuck with the bill for cleaning up abandoned mines.
Four-Star Sierra Club Foundation
For the seventh straight year, the Sierra Club Foundation has received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, an organization that evaluates the financial health, accountability, and transparency of charitable organizations. We're honored to have our foundation recognized as it supports our work to explore, enjoy, and protect the planet for years to come.
Help us celebrate!
The Overburden
Former Sierra magazine writer/editor Jake Abrahamson was among the finalists in this year's Livingston Awards for Young Journalists, sponsored by the University of Michigan, in the "Excellence in International Reporting" category. Abrahamson's story "The Overburden" examined a human rights crisis in India perpetrated by a coal-burning power plant for which jungle ecosystems and human communities have been leveled, and how the latest project was financed largely by U.S. taxpayer dollars.

High Country Adventures
The snowpack is finally melting and the wildflowers are in bloom, which means the high country is ready for visitors. Here are a few prime opportunities to enjoy high passes, alpine lakes, and wildflower-filled meadows with the Sierra Club this summer and early fall.
- Bring your whole family for mountain vistas and activities in California's Sierra Nevada.
- Backpack among high peaks, passes, and lakes in the Eagle Cap Wilderness, Oregon.
- Hike a variety of trails from a cozy lodge in the Colorado Rockies.
- Backpack among fall colors and caribou in Alaska's Gates of the Arctic National Park.

Calling All Student Leaders
The executive committee of the Sierra Student Coalition (SSC) is a seven-member group elected by the membership every year. The SSC is looking for experienced members who have shown leadership within their own communities and the SSC to serve on the committee. The application deadline for nominating someone you know who is deserving -- or for nominating yourself -- is June 15 at 6:00 PM EST. Online balloting runs from June 18 to July 1, and the results will be announced by July 8.
Find out more about nominating someone worthy -- and who knows, that person may be you!
Food for Thought
When it comes to the problem of climate disruption, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune loves solutions. But the most the obvious solutions aren't necessarily the only solutions. Case in point: China's Ministry of Health announced new nutritional guidelines recommending that its citizens eat more fish and chicken and less red meat.
Read Brune's thoughts on the connection between food and the climate.
A Path Forward for Coal Country
As the coal industry continues to decline, the people of Appalachia should not be left behind. Reflecting on her family's deep roots in the state, Mary Anne Hitt, the director of the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign, discusses how coal country can emerge from our clean energy transition stronger, healthier, and with a resilient foundation for the future.
Read Hitt's post.
Kamping With Kardashians?
Add some creature comforts and (dare we say it?) glamour to camping and the result is "glamping," which depending on whom you ask, is either a pretentious fad or an innovative way to make the outdoors more accessible to more kinds of people.
Sierra magazine looks at the case for un-roughing it.

These Kids Are Alright!
For a city of its size, Santa Ana, California, has one of the nation's highest rates of car-bicycle collisions. But after the father of Maribel Mateo and Tony Garcia was struck by a car while riding his bike, the teenage siblings took the initiative to make cycling safer by starting a campaign to conduct bikeability assessments in their community. The result? A $2.37 million grant to to improve bike safety in Santa Ana.
Read the story of these inspiring young activists in Sierra magazine.
Pulp Friction
Oregon's 93,000-acre Elliott State Forest, half of which has never been logged, contains habitat for northern spotted owls, marbled murrelets, wild Pacific salmon, and a host of other native species. Yet the state has put the entire forest up for sale to raise money for public schools.
How did Washington and Oregon end up relying on forests to fund schools, and does it really make sense to force a choice between educating our children and selling the public lands that are their birthright?

Congress, Please Protect the Bees
Toxic pesticides called neonicotinoids, or "neonics," are killing bees and putting 1/4 of what we eat at risk -- as crops like apples and watermelon depend on bee pollination. American beekeepers reported an estimated loss of 44 percent of their hives last year. Congress must put an end to this crisis.
Tell Congress to pass the Saving America's Pollinators Act.
No Way, Norway!
When it comes to clean energy and climate action, Norway is doing some great things -- like going all in on electric vehicles and becoming the first nation in the world to completely ban clearcutting of trees. So that makes it doubly bizarre that the Norwegian government just awarded new Arctic drilling licenses to 13 oil companies. Ironically, some of the Arctic waters where Norway wants to permit more oil drilling are only now accessible because of climate change.
Learn more and send a message telling the Norwegian government to back off from drilling in the Arctic.
