Thinking of taking a cruise this summer? Consider this -- many cruise ships still use dirty fuel. And many still dump inadequately treated sewage and other waste into the sea!These dirty practices harm our air and our fragile marine environments. They do irreparable damage to coral reefs. And they impact wildlife like whales and sea turtles. We need your help to make cruise companies behave better! Tell the EPA: Crack down on cruise companies and their polluting practices! The EPA is giving cruise companies like Carnival a free pass to continue business-as-usual. It hasn’t updated the Clean Water Act standards for cruise ship wastewater dumping in more than 35 years. That means these companies have the green light to pollute -- even when they’re operating in extremely sensitive environments like the American Arctic or the Caribbean! The results are devastating. Cruise ship wastewater is one factor causing huge amounts of algae to grow in the Gulf. These algal blooms have already killed more than 150 manatees off the Florida coast. We can’t let cruise companies get away with dumping this polluting wastewater in our oceans! Tell the EPA to protect our marine life and make cruise ships clean up their acts! Friends of the Earth just released its sixth Cruise Ship Report Card. This year, we rated 17 cruise lines and the 171 ships they operate on their water quality and air pollution impacts. And for the sixth time, we've found that the majority of cruise lines are doing less than they can to protect the areas where they travel. The good news is, some cruise companies and individual ships have already made the switch to cleaner practices. But most are resisting. If we want to bring the whole industry up to standard, we need the EPA to act. Tell the EPA it MUST hold the cruise industry accountable and bring companies like Carnival into the 21st century!
