Every day at EPI, we are proud to give a voice to the struggles of workers.
This year, EPI’s work made it clear that after decades of wage stagnation, raising wages for workers is the key economic challenge of our time. Our work bolstered the economic arguments for raising the minimum wage, giving overtime pay to millions more workers, and so much more.

With your support, EPI led the way in 2016. Some highlights include:

Overtime
In May the U.S. Department of Labor relied upon EPI research to issue a new rule raising the overtime salary threshold from $23,660 to $47,476. This new threshold will benefit 12.5 million workers through higher wages, reduced workload, or both.

EPI was instrumental in supporting this regulation at every stage by organizing supporters to submit public comments, sign petitions, and educate workers and lawmakers about the benefits this new regulation would provide. EPI Vice President Ross Eisenbrey led these efforts, earning him recognition as one of Politico’s 50 most influential individuals of 2016.

Sadly, the fight is not over. The new regulation has been temporarily blocked by a federal judge and, if it passes that hurdle, the conservative Congress will likely attempt to overturn it or weaken it in 2017. EPI is collecting stories from workers who would benefit from the new regulation and, with your support, we will defend the regulation again next year.

Trade
When Donald Trump cited EPI trade research in June 2016, EPI President Lawrence Mishel shot back saying that “Trump’s latest take on trade is a scam.” Mishel pointed out that Trump supports the traditional corporate agenda of tax cuts for corporations and the rich—and noted that Trump has neglected to acknowledge the Republican Party’s leading role in disempowering workers over the last four decades. Mishel’s response was featured in articles in the Washington Post and The American Prospect.

Meanwhile, EPI’s Director of Trade and Manufacturing Policy Research, Robert Scott, has repeatedly and directly challenged Donald Trump’s use of Scott’s own research on trade agreements, earning him a spot among Politico’s 50 most influential individuals of 2016.

Unions
Our report Union decline lowers wages of nonunion workers received widespread media attention, including pieces in CBS MoneyWatchPBS Newshour, and MarketplaceThe report was even mentioned in speeches by both Vice President Joe Biden and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Next year will bring new challenges. The Trump administration and Congress could do real harm by dismantling the legal protections and safety-net programs so many workers rely on. Defending these hard-won worker protections and telling the true story of why they are beneficial will require all of us to work together and respond quickly to new dangers.

Thank you for supporting EPI in 2016. Together, we will continue the fight for workers in 2017 and beyond.
