Stjepan,
It's been an exciting month. Tens of thousands of Demand Progress members have sent emails to their members of Congress demanding that they defend the Iran deal. In collaboration with progressive groups like CREDO Action and MoveOn, hundreds more have attended town hall meetings to confront Senators and Representatives directly.
And it's working. Dozens of Democrats have stepped up to declare their support in the last few weeks, including Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow just at the start of this week. And The New York Times reported that "supporters of the deal are closing in on the number they need to ensure it goes into force."[1]
But that same report lays out plenty of "wild cards" that could spoil the deal, including the millions of dollars being poured into deceptive ads and powerful lobbyists that will surely descend on Capitol Hill to persuade undecideds when Congress returns from their August recess.
We're not kidding when we say the pressure from the warhawks on Congress to oppose the deal will be serious. Former Vice President Dick Cheney plans to give a speech against the Iran deal on September 8 at the American Enterprise Institute, just one week before the end of the 60-day Congressional review period and a key vote.
Even worse: deep-pocketed special interests continue to target key undecided Senators and Representatives — many of whom depend on their campaign contributions for re-election.
Are we really going to continue using war as our most prominent foreign policy tool? We've seen how much money was poured into war with Iraq. We've mourned the human cost of servicemembers coming home severely injured or dead. It wasn't worth it then, and it sure as hell isn't worth it now.
Thanks — we'll be in touch soon.
—David, Daniel, Kurt, Mark, Sara, Victoria and the rest of the Demand Progress team
