קוראים וקוראות יקרים, Pennsylvania House Passes Bill to Ban Dismemberment Abortions Tearing Off Baby’s Limbs The Pennsylvania state House today passed a pro-life bill to ban dismemberment abortions that tear off an unborn baby’s limbs

ב"ה

Ugly Churches Win Awards

The website of the Italian Episcopal Conference’s newspaper Avvenirereported Wednesday on the winners of the 6th edition of the International “Frate Sole” prize for sacred architecture. I would normally ignore an item like this when it pops up, as it did, on my Facebook feed, but for the grossly inappropriate headline, “Here Are The New Most Beautiful Churches in the World.” Tourism accounts for around 10% of Italy’s economy, which is the 8th largest in the world; the nation received over 57 million foreign visitors in 2013, while every holiday season, millions of Italians travel within their own country to visit what they call the “Città d’arte – Art cities.” (This classically Italian expression means both cities that are full of art, but also cities that are in and of themselves works of art.) One cannot help but ask, What kinds of churches, and what kind of beauty, do the editors of Avvenire imagine these people are coming to their country to see?

This photograph of the 3rd prize winner highlights the problem perfectly; at first glance, most people would probably assume that the building in the background was the church, and the one in the foreground a train station, or perhaps a library dedicated to the works of really depressing philosophers.
(photograph from Wikimedia Commons by RobKohl)
Unfortunately, the one in the foreground is the Propsteikirche (Provost’s Church) of the Holy Trinity in Leipzig, Germany; the only thing to indicate this architecturally is the cross on the bell tower, which looks a great deal like the clock tower of the train station in my home town of Providence, R.I. The building in the background is the early 20th century city hall.

Things don’t get any better inside.
(photograph from Wikimedia Commons by Martin Geisler)
And then there’s the first prize-winner, the Iglesia de Iesu (it is apparently officially spelled that way, according to the Greek, for no discernible reason) in San Sebastián in northern Spain. Here we will start with the sanctuary, featuring a retable that is completely blank. (closer view - photos from Wikipedia bySimoncio)
‘Charles,’ said Cordelia, ‘Modern Art is all bosh, isn’t it?’ ‘Great bosh.’

The tabernacle
Just over three years ago, I noted a critique of this style of church design from no less a personage than Dr Antonio Paolucci, the director of the Vatican Museum, which applies here just as much as it does to the modern churches in the periphery of Rome about which they were originally said: ”They look like warehouses. ... Spaces that do not invite (us) to meditation, devoid of the sense of the sacred, without a breath of mystery or religion.”

The problem here is that the title of this article is not just true in the immediate sense, a way of saying in the classic style of newspaper headlines that specific ugly churches have just won awards. It is also true aphoristically; ugly churches win architectural awards all the time, because they are designed to win awards, not to serve as the House of God and the home of His people.

To cleanse the palate, here’s a photo of the Greek Orthodox church in Venice, San Giorgio dei Greci, recently taken by our Ambrosian correspondent Nicola de’ Grandi. Not designed to win awards.

Focus Focus

One of the best lines on Silicon Valley was when Jared says, “No, no, don’t think of it as a cubicle. Think of it as a neutral-colored enclosure about yay-high around your work space.” You probably thought to yourself, thank goodness I am in a modern office space with no walls. And cubicles can make us feel like we are in a cage, except they can also be tough even when they include all those perks like pool tables, bars and slides. Without separate rooms, you can get easily distracted by all your coworkers’ conversations, smells and YouTube preferences. A new report from Oxford Economics shows that millennials are sick of having all these distractions in the workplace. In a survey of more than 1,200 American employees, it was found that 50 percent of millennials workers want, above all, the ability to focus and work without interruptions. None of them said that free food (or beer) were most important to them in a work environment. Ummm, did this include the new flavored Oreos? More than half of the employees complained about noise and researchers found that millennials were especially likely to complain about the noise, and to wear headphones to drown out the sound or leave their desks in search of quiet space. My gosh, throw on a flannel and loose-fitting jeans and you’ve got my dad. (Related: 15 Things Everyone Thinks While Working in a Coworking Space)

The Big Debt

Millennials are broke. Financial website The College Investor estimated the average net worth (AKA assets minus liabilities) for many millennials and found that their net worth is in the negative zero range. Of course, a big contribution to this low net worth is that pesky student loan debt.  The data found that the average debt burden for students has almost doubled within the millennial generation. The average graduate of the class of 2016 has a student loan debt of $37,172 (for the class of 2003 it was $18,271.) Better start packing those lunches. (Related: 12 Things Millennials Won’t Spend Money On)

Beyonce Just Eliminated Bikinis

Beyonce can do anything! She may have just solved the whole sun causing skin cancer issue as well as having to get in bikini body shape every season (pizza for everyone!) On her recent trip to Hawaii the singer was seen sporting a cut-out long-sleeve pink, green and yellow all-in-one swimsuit and she looked amazing. You know these will be all over the beach this summer. Watch her throw on a bathing cap and get everyone jazzed about those. Skimpy is out people, UV protection is on fleek. If Francis is an Antipope, We Can’t Know It Yet

By Steve Skojec on Jun 21, 2016 07:24 pm
Over the weekend, noteworthy Catholic blogger Ann Barnhardt published an essay in which she states that she believes “Jorge Bergoglio, ‘Francis’ to be an Antipope, never having been canonically elected, and that Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI is still the Roman Pontiff.” She goes further, asserting that The sheer quantity of evidence, and the diversity [...]

We’re floored. After months of denials and a truly cringeworthy presidential campaign, Florida’s Marco Rubio just announced...
THIS JUST IN: Rubio breaks promise, decides to run for reelection
Don’t let him crush our shot at the Senate! Pitch in now >>

We’re floored, STJEPAN -- After months of denials (and a cringeworthy presidential campaign) Marco Rubio just granted Mitch McConnell’s wish. He wants to keep his Senate seat after all!

Rubio’s brazen move scrambles the whole Senate map -- and opens the floodgates for MILLIONS in establishment spending! Unless we respond ASAP, that cash could buy Lil’ Marco another term... and foil our hopes of winning the Senate!

So we’re coming to you with an urgent request, STJEPAN. Will you pitch in to turn Marco’s seat BLUE and keep us on track to win back the Senate?

If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

Pitch in $3 IMMEDIATELY >>

Pitch in $8 IMMEDIATELY >>

Pitch in $17 IMMEDIATELY >>

Pitch in $25 IMMEDIATELY >>

Pitch in $35 IMMEDIATELY >>

Or donate another amount.

It’s hard to believe that Rubio -- who spent the last year badmouthing a job he barely showed up for -- could win. But top Republicans like McConnell are ALL-IN for their company man, and polls show the race tight as ever.

That means we have to respond… fast. Pitch in to replace do-nothing Rubio with Democrat Patrick Murphy -- and help us DEMOTE McConnell for good!

Let’s get ‘em,
