We expect Donald Trump will nominate a right-wing extremist to fill the Supreme Court's vacancy within the first days or weeks of his administration. We must immediately prepare to pull out all the stops to oppose an unacceptable right-wing nominee.

PFAW Fights Back Against Trump's Pick of Civil Rights Opponent Jeff Sessions for Attorney General

reject sessions
Trump’s inauguration is still nearly two months away, but the names he’s put forth for important White House and cabinet positions have already made it apparent that he’ll be bringing the extremism and bigotry of his campaign into his administration. One of the most dangerous picks yet is Senator Jeff Sessions for Attorney General. Sessions, an early and loyal supporter of Trump’s campaign, was rejected by the Senate in 1986 when he was nominated as a federal judge, on account of his long track record of racist, inflammatory remarks and a disastrous record on civil rights. In the thirty years since then, Sessions has done nothing to indicate the Senate’s rejection of him was incorrect or that he’s learned from his mistakes. Yet Donald Trump wants him to be our country’s top law enforcement official.
PFAW is fighting to stop Sessions’ confirmation by holding senators accountable. Over 60,000 PFAW members have already signed our petition demanding that the Senate reject Sessions -- if you haven’t added your name yet, please do so now!
Sessions isn't Trump's only deeply concerning appointment. Shortly after the election, Trump announced that Steve Bannon, his campaign CEO and the former chair of right-wing media outlet Breitbart, will serve as his chief White House strategist. We organized PFAW members to call their senators and representatives, and urge them to speak out against hate by condemning Bannon's White House position.

A Century of Progress Is at Risk Under the Trump Administration
But we need to choose hope over despair, and remember that PFAW was founded for times just like this one.

Facing the Fight Ahead: PFAW Is In It For the Long Haul

PFAW is in the fight
This month has been a tremendously difficult one, and for many of us in the progressive movement, the road ahead seems daunting. Our country took a devastating blow, especially so for women, people of color, and religious minorities. There’s no sugar-coating it: our upcoming battles are all uphill. But while the consequences of a Trump presidency can feel overwhelming, our commitment to our progressive values is more important than ever.
The fight we’re facing is completely unprecedented. Our president-elect lacks respect for our democracy, and his cabinet picks already show he’s planning to bring the bigotry and extremism of his campaign into the White House. But we cannot sit this one out -- the future of our most fundamental rights depends on us showing up for this fight. And we’re not going anywhere. We’re going to keep fighting, day in and day out, for progressive values that protect the civil liberties of all Americans, and to counter hatred and bigotry. And we’re so grateful to have you on board for the road ahead.

The Fight for the Supreme Court Is More Important Than Ever

supreme court
In a news cycle dominated by president-elect Trump’s scandal or Twitter tantrum of the day, we haven’t forgotten one of the most concerning threats his presidency poses: his Supreme Court nominations. While Trump has only been elected president for the next four years, if confirmed, his Supreme Court picks will serve for life. Leading up to the election, PFAW helped to show how severe the threat of a Trump Court really is, and what its consequences might be. Now that the threat is real, we’re uniquely qualified to lead the fight against it. Twenty years ago, our ads and advocacy work were critical to the Senate’s rejection of Reagan Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork. Since then, we’ve only learned more about how to fight these battles, and we’re ready to pull out all the stops to keep a disastrous Trump nominee off our nation’s highest court.

On a Bleak Election Night, a Few Small but Important Victories Show Where Our Work Paid Off

new hampshire protest
Once the dust of Election Night’s profound disappointment settled, we were able to identify several places where PFAW’s work paid off and progressive values won. In Nevada, PFAW’sLatinos Vote! program worked overtime with ads and on the ground events to mobilize Latino voters.
In Nevada, not only did Hillary Clinton win, but Catherine Cortez Masto defeated Joe Heck to become the first Latina U.S. Senator! In New Hampshire, where PFAW’s robust field program mobilized activists on the ground to canvas, phone bank, and attend rallies and events, voters chose Maggie Hassan and Hillary Clinton -- both supporters of a comprehensive solution to getting big money out of politics -- over incumbent Senator Kelly Ayotte and Donald Trump.
