3 New National Monuments You Should Visit

Twenty-four national monuments have been established in the past eight years of the Obama administration. The president has designated over 553 million acres of protected lands reflecting a diversity of places and people. The newest landmarks include sprawling desert, a park in New York City, and islands off the Pacific coast.

RESPECTED FRIENDS,

Tell Citigroup and Wells Fargo: Cut off the money for the Dakota Access Pipeline!
Last week, in below-freezing weather, police used water cannons against thousands of Indigenous Peoples and allies who are fighting the Dakota Access pipeline.  This was just the latest assault in a pattern of police and private security violence against the peaceful water protectors. Attack dogs, rubber bullets, concussion grenades, tazers and mace have been used. There have been reports of people being locked up naked, or cramped without food and warmth into dog kennel-type containers. Hundreds of people have been injured. But the water protectors aren’t giving up in the fight for their rights. After all, the Dakota Access pipeline would cut through wildlife habitat and ancestral lands -- would put their drinking water at risk.  And this is all being funded by Wall Street giants Citigroup and Wells Fargo. The Standing Rock Sioux need your help to cut off the money for the pipeline! Tell Citigroup and Wells Fargo to pull their loans for the Dakota Access Pipeline!  Citigroup and Wells Fargo are part of an international group of banks who provided a $2.5 billion loan to help finance Dakota Access. But the company that’s building the pipeline -- Energy Transfer Partners -- can’t access the full loan until they meet certain construction deadlines.  So Energy Transfer Partners -- and the police and private security who are backing them -- are hell-bent on pushing ahead. And if the company doesn’t finish by year’s end, the oil shippers who committed to paying for pipeline fees get to renegotiate their contracts. Then the whole deal could financially fall apart.  The water protectors are doing their part to delay construction. They need you to do yours. You may be wondering what you can do to stop this pipeline with Donald Trump coming into office. But if we cut off the money, we can help stop the pipeline from being built.  As we face the hostility of the new Administration and a Republican-controlled Congress, we will be increasingly taking our fight to corporate boardrooms and Wall Street. Together, we can still make progress for people and the planet.
Take action now: Help stop the Dakota Access pipeline by cutting off the money!
Standing with you,
Michelle Chan,
Vice president of programs,

ISIS-attack-Israel-email
Israeli aircraft attacked early Monday morning a facility belonging to the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization in the Syrian part of the Golan Heights. The attack was in retaliation to Sunday’s attack on IDF forces who were engaged in operations along the Syrian border. The patrol returned fire on Sunday, first with small arms and then with mortars. The Israel Air Force then located the armored vehicle that had been the source of the fire and destroyed the vehicle, killing all four ISIS terrorists inside. According to an IDF statement, Monday morning’s attack targeted an abandoned military facility which was previously used by the United Nations and which the ISIS terrorists used to attack the IDF forces near the border. “This is a continuation of yesterday’s attack which aimed at preventing the return of the terrorists to a facility constitutes a fundamental threat to the region,” the statement said. “The IDF will continue to act to protect the citizens of Israel while maintaining the IDF's freedom of action inside the sovereign territory of Israel, and will not hesitate to act against the terrorist organizations operating against it,” it added. Up to now, any missiles that landed in Israel from across the Syrian border were stray fire that was not launched intentionally towards Israel. The purposeful attack on Sunday, however, was different and sources said it was dealt with immediately to serve as a deterrent.
