EPI News—Our most important stories this week What millions of Americans could lose under the AHCA In a new Economic Snapshot, EPI’s Josh Bivens outlines the economic impacts millions of Americans will face if the Affordable Care Act is repealed and replaced with the American Health Care Act (AHCA). Bivens finds that the AHCA would increase out-of-pocket expenses for American families by $33 billion each year by 2026—in addition to 23 million Americans losing health coverage. Share Tweet Tweet this graphic Share this graphic on Facebook Unpaid congressional internships: Bad for students, bad for policy Summer has officially arrived in the nation’s capital, and with it an influx of summer interns who will work in congressional offices—for no pay. In a new article, EPI’s Celine McNicholas finds that at least three-quarters of all House offices employ unpaid interns. At the most basic level, McNicholas writes, unpaid internships undermine the central premise of our nation’s labor and employment law—that everyone has a right to be paid for their work. But the lack of paid internships also limits the opportunities of young people whose families cannot afford to finance such an opportunity, ultimately contributing to the institutionalization of socioeconomic disparities. Working people deserve schedules that work On Tuesday, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) introduced the Schedules That Work Act, which is designed to give hourly workers more certainty about their work schedules. For millions of hourly workers, a predictable, stable work schedule is rare—leading to unstable earnings and making it difficult for workers to take care of their families. EPI research associate Lonnie Golden explains the significance of the bill, which requires that employees receive sufficient advance notice of schedules and have the right to request schedule changes. EPI’s Janelle Jones writes that low-wage workers in particular would benefit from this legislation. Forward this email to a friend DALMATIANS call it fijaka - a deliciously lazy mood of utter contentment - and it encapsulates the feeling of a Croatian break in shoulder season. The sun is hot, the sea stays warm til November, and home is blanketed by damp grey skies - hooray! Less conducive to the mood is when Dubrovnik is chock-full of coach tours (practically all year round). So, go instead to those out-of-the-way beaches and islands which the Croats themselves escape to; places of pinch-me perfection where lunches are long and nightlife means a nightcap by the harbour. Although most are within an hour of an international airport, they are little haikus of holidaymaking: so simple, so pure and nowadays so sophisticated thanks to a new breed of small hotel. And just out of season the prices plummet - but not the temperatures. Now there is something conducive to a fijaka.

The Israeli military released footage Saturday evening of several air strikes carried out against Syrian military targets after numerous mortar shells hit the Golan Heights from Syria. The black-and-white video showed strikes against two Syrian tanks as well as a heavy machine gun. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor which has been reporting on Syria’s six-year war, said two Syrian soldiers were killed in the Israeli strikes. Syrian officials confirmed several deaths, though they did not provide details. The air raids came after some 10 mortar shells hit Israeli territory around the Quneitra area on Saturday afternoon. Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman warned that the regime would continue to “suffer the consequences” of any attack on Israel emanating from its territory. Israel, he said, had “no intention of accepting challenges to our sovereignty and threats to our security, even if they are caused by ‘spillover'” from Syrian infighting. “We will respond strongly, resolutely and with level-headedness to any such case,” he said. “As far as we are concerned the Assad regime is responsible for what occurs in its territory and will continue to suffer the consequences if such events recur. Greg Gianforte of Montana was convicted of assaulting a reporter from The Guardian who was trying to ask him a question on the eve of a special election. Gianforte won the election. The Lexington Herald-Leader newspaper in Kentucky had its office windows shot out. Veteran reporter Dan Heyman was arrested in West Virginia for posing questions about health care to Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price. FCC security guards stalked and manhandled John Donnelly of CQ Roll Call after he attempted to ask an FCC commissioner a question. A State Department official threatened CNN reporter Michelle Kosinski and demanded to know who her sources were.
