Maggie for NH
Make no mistake, Stjepan — Donald Trump and Betsy DeVos’s plan to cut $9.2 BILLION from public education is extremely alarming.
DeVos is planning to funnel money away from public schools toward unaccountable private and charter schools — all to line the pockets of corporate special interests.
Students, teachers, and hard-working families could suffer at the hand of DeVos's budget cuts. Funding for vocational programs that help people find jobs, teacher training, afterschool programs, and more could go out the window.
Every student deserves to be set up for success. But this budget isn't about doing what's best for our kids. It's about Betsy DeVos’s corporate agenda to gut funding for public schools.
The only way to prevent this budget from passing and stop this threat to public education is to make our voices heard loud and clear.
Thank you for fighting for the issues that matter most,
Team Maggie

Dear ,

The Trump Administration wants to massively shrink Bears Ears. Donate NOW and save our National Monuments!

The Trump Administration has its eye on gutting protections for Bears Ears National Monument.
Yesterday, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced that he’s recommending that Trump massively shrink the monument.  Doing this would break the law.
If Trump follows that recommendation, he’ll sacrifice millions of acres of canyons, arches, and piñon-juniper forests to Big Oil. He could damage artifacts, buildings and sacred spaces of Native American communities.
This is an emergency! At Friends of the Earth Action, we’re pulling out all the stops to prevent fossil fuel development in our wild places. But we need your help!
Save our National Monuments from Donald Trump: Donate $27 or more to Friends of the Earth Action!
If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
Thanks to Donald Trump, visitors to Bears Ears could soon see, hear and smell coal mines and oil wells.
And if we do nothing, it won’t just be Bears Ears. The Administration is reviewing protections for 26 other National Monuments -- more than a billion acres of our natural and cultural heritage.
That’s why we’re working with a broad coalition of environmental groups to create a groundswell of support -- more than a million comments -- to protect these special places.
At the same time, we’re pushing the Senate to stand up for our public lands and National Monuments. We’re working with the media to expose how Trump’s appointee to be in charge of our public lands -- David Bernhardt -- would profit off their destruction.
This work is more important than ever. Trump will need to work with Congress to destroy Bears Ears. We still have a chance to stop this -- but we need your help.
Stjepan, will you stop Trump from destroying our National Monuments?
If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
From Grand Canyon Watershed to Giant Sequoia National Monument, our public lands house some of this country’s last truly wild places.
If Big Oil is allowed to destroy them, we could lose important wildlife like desert bighorn sheep. We could lose one of the ten highest sequoia groves left. And it would get us one step closer to climate chaos.
We can’t let Trump hand over these places to the fossil fuel industry. But we need your help to fight back!

Stop Trump from handing over our monuments to Big Oil: Donate $27 or more NOW!
If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

Sam Sifton's messy cookbooks

As food editor at the NYTimes, weekly columnist for the NYTimes Magazine and founding editor of NYTCooking, you might not think Sam Sifton has time to let loose in the kitchen. You'd be wrong. "Lately [I've been cooking from] the Lucky Peach cookbook, 101 Easy Asian Recipes. I've got to be up near 90 of them done by now. That thing is slick with sesame oil, rank with fish sauce, till death do us part." When not slinging fish sauce, Sifton enjoys breakfasting on cold navel oranges and avoiding ramps. "I think I'm about done with [them]," Sifton says. Guess we won't be seeing a recipe for pesto with ramps in NYTimes anytime soon. HANG WITH SAM [The Gannet]

Chicken soup for the 19th-century soul

What do you crave when you're sick? Chicken soup or honey tea, maybe? You probably don't pine for toast water or beef tea. But if you were ill in the late 19th-century, that's what you'd be served by your mother or the woman in the house who was charged with nursing you back to health. As culinary historian Laura Shaprio explains, "The home itself was a site for the reform movement, and the role of a woman was to raise up a new American family. And you do it in great part through sanitation, hygiene and proper nutrition." TAKE YOUR MEDICINE [NPR]

While we relish bok choy's satisfying crunch when flash-cooked in a stir fry, this umami-laden grilled bok choy is a gamechanger. Chop a head of bok choy in half lengthwise and cook it on a grill until it gets smoky and charred. You could grab a fork and knife and devour it plain. Or you could smother it blistered bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese and a generous dose of lemon zest. Take that, stir fry! GET THE RECIPE [Dishing Up The Dirt]
