As one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean, it would be a shame not to visit Athens if you spend your sailing holidays in Greece. This ancient city, known as the cradle of the western civilization, is loud, crowded and busy, but, thanks to the well-known Greek charm, it is difficult not to fall in love with.
The home of many museums and theaters, each part of Athens bears witness to a piece of history and culture. The ancient citadel Acropolis is a must-see for every visitor, with the Parthenon, a temple of the goddess Athena, dominating the city panorama. The National Archaeological Museum houses the richest collection of artifacts from Greek past, and is often considered as one of the world’s greatest museums.

 Plaka neighborhood, Athens

Of the city’s many neighborhoods, make sure you visit Monastiriki, one of favorite shopping areas for tourists, with plenty of souvenir shops and opportunities to bargain. If you are interested in more high-end stores, pay a visit to Kolonaki neighborhood, or enjoy it in the evenings, when it becomes a vibrant place thanks to plenty of bars and taverns. Plaka is another popular neighborhood, with its old houses and proximity to the Acropolis.
If you are visiting Athens from June to October, don’t miss the famous Athens & Epidaurus festival, where you can enjoy the traditional bouzouki music or perhaps even learn a folk dance!
Only 12 kilometers from Athens lies Piraeus, Greece’s main port and the second largest passenger port in the world. From there, you can explore the Athens sailing area, with beautiful islands such as Poros, Aegina and Methana.
