The Daily Signal
July 7, 2017
Good morning from Washington, where interest in Russian interference in the presidential election doesn't translate into curiosity about widespread voter fraud. Fred Lucas looks into why some states apparently don't care either. If Congress wants to help the poor, it will require the able-bodied to seek work in exchange for welfare, Jarrett Stepman writes. A dying British infant finds champions in pro-life leaders, Rachel del Guidice reports. Plus: Lucas on applying Texan sense to energy policy and Stepman on a Polish soldier who fought for America's freedom.
COMMENTARY

Why the Left Is Wrong About Welfare Reform

Left-wing detractors have been quick to attack a new welfare reform proposal, both claiming that the 1996 law didn't work and that the recent legislation is merely a way to provide tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of the poor.

Could Canadians Love Their National Parks to Death?

With the promotion of Parks Canada's Discovery Pass, offering free entry to all Canadian National Parks in 2017, some Canadian conservationists worry that the federal government there has only made things worse for its already overcrowded parks.

The free annual passes, offered as part of Canada's 150th birthday celebration, have been wildly popular, with more than 3.3 million orders received since last December. At one point, demand overwhelmed Parks Canada's website, after nearly one million people ordered a Discovery Pass in the first two weeks of the promotion. Due in part to the free entry passes, Parks Canada management is expecting record visitation this summer. (For comparison, the United States's National Park System saw a 7.72 percent increase in visitation in 2016, its well-publicized centennial.)
Read moreWhile this is great news for nature enthusiasts and Canadian tourism, some conservationists say increased traffic to the country's national parks—which received more than 20 million visitors last year-could harm park ecosystems.

Last week, Pruitt met with coal industry executives to promise them “red team-blue team” exercises. This means he wants to form a group to question the merits of climate science -- which could roll back the EPA’s reliance on peer-reviewed science and replace it with a politically motivated "review." In other words, it could lead to the EPA formally denying climate change.  Meanwhile, Pruitt has forced out almost everyone on the Board of Scientific Counselors. He and Trump are likely to replace them with fossil fuel industry representatives. Why is Pruitt going to such great lengths to undermine climate science? Because as long as the science shows the EPA’s programs -- from the Clean Water Rule to the Clean Power Plan – are working, the courts can stop him from gutting those programs.
Donate $25 or more and stop Scott Pruitt from greenlighting climate denial at the EPA!

This war on science is part of Trump’s campaign to hand our Earth over to Big Oil. And the only things stopping him are Congress and the courts. At Friends of the Earth Action, we’re building a rapid response team of volunteers to respond to these attacks. We’re mobilizing in Congressional districts across the country. At the same time, we’re taking Trump to court to stop the Keystone XL pipeline and to prevent more coal mining in our wild places. But we need your help to keep this work going.
Help save our environment from Trump and his Big Oil cronies -- donate $25 or more!

New post on Quo Vadis Croatia

Poklonimo se pred Bogom

by Robert

Moving Up

Hey, LIC is actually the best at something!
As this up-and-coming city grows, Long Island City has gotten itself back on the map with all of its new construction.
Its noteworthy and continually-growing new apartment stock has even surpassed this iconic U.S. city.
Let’s just say it’s not on the East Coast or has pizza as great as NYC’s, so there’s really no reason to move there anyway.

Pizza Wars

Gordon Ramsay says exactly what everyone in there right mind has said since this type of pizza was invented: “You don’t put f*cking pineapple on pizza!”
The hot-blooded chef has never said anything more accurate in his life.
But there comes a time when a major sacrifice can go a long way, even if that does mean eating the worst recipe ever created.
Here’s how to convince Gordon Ramsay to eat this disgrace to authentic Italian cuisine for an amazing cause.
But hurry! You only have about a day and a half left!
